I know there are many opinions out there, but I was a guy who used molded cleats all of the time back in the day. I made the switch to detachable and haven't looked back. I like how I can change my cleat length depending on the surface and weather conditions. With molded it seems to be a "one size fits all" solution when it comes to spike length. Being able to replace your spikes without having to break in a new pair of cleats is also a perk.

Detachable are way better then molded, trust me. I ran with molded cleats last year, but in wet weather and cold they seemed to slip more and give me less traction. The detachable's, which I have run in a good 4-5 times since I have bought them, seem to provide a whole lot more traction and stability then the molded cleats. Plus, the being able to change spike lengths from 1/2 to 3/4 is really god send, since the longer spikes really do help with traction on the field.

One more piece of advice, if you do not already know: Do not buy underarmer cleats! Nike / Reebok cleats are much better, and I have heard many a teammate complain about the underarmer cleats.

Agreed, Underarmor gear usually wears out fast. I bought the Reebok electrifys for this season. I haved used molded Addidas/Nikes for the last 3 years so it should be a change I need to get used to.

My UA cleats didnt last very long... they wore down quite a bit in one season. The next season they where uncomfortable to wear and caused blisters every time I wore them. I bought a pair nike land sharks for $20 and they are fine.

This is only my opinion but Ive always gones with molded cleats for any linemen positions and detachable for any skill position. You usually dont gain much on length because if the rules are still the same as when I was in HS you cant go over 1/2 in. cleats. this may be different depending on location.

Nike Boss for linemen

Nike midcuts with metal spikes for all others. Problem solved.

Molded cleats are very good, but if you play an away game on astroturf or some god-forsaken obsolete field, your performance will really suffer. If you do decide on these, also get a pair of turf shoes just in case.

The thing I like about having screw-in cleats is that (most of the time, if they aren't too worn down) I can change them. I'd get metal-tipped cleats though, otherwise they won't be effective for very long, and it will be a pain to remove them.

Molded for hard ground. detachables for soft ground. Mostly comes down to preference.

I was a TE, so I had a few decisions regarding cleats. Did I want the high tops to help my blocking? Did I want the low tops for my route running (we ran a spread)? Did I want mids for a combo of both? Did I want molded or metal?

In the end, cleats are cleats. I would say that I somewhat preferred the metal cleats on those wet games. I actually had two sets. I had a set of mid ankle support with molded cleats. I had a set of low tops with metal spikes as well. I really wore the cleats based on who we were playing which week, and what the field conditions/forecast were.

If money isn't an issue, I recommend two sets of cleats, one with molded and one with metal detachables. Wear the molded in practice to break them in....you will definitely get usage out of them. Especially if you lose a spike in the middle of a game (you will know, it feels so odd to step) and don't have a quick way of getting the spike replaced.
