Definately outside man. I'm getting ready to leave for bootcamp in january and the sarges have us running outside instead of treadmill. The only time ill use the mill is to see what my 3 mile time is, and even then its slower than it would be outside, because treadmills dont account for the push you give off with your calves while u run, my mile time on the tread is 7:50 but on pavement its 7:05. Plus, think of the babes u will c if u run outside!

Hams and gluts are activated outside and not so much on a treadmill.
Good luck with bootcamp!

I prefer treadmill just because I can control what enviroment I run in, plus for HIIT it's easy to time yourself and all that jazz.
Running on treadmill I notice I go for a time instead of outside, where I'd run for distance.
So it must be a mental thing for me.

I can't run on a treadmill, I have a short attention span.
Also it just seams pointless to run for a half hour and not go anywhere. Outside FOR SURE.

Not to be radically different, but I like jump roping outside? It gives the benefit of not having to carry water (close to home) and I can change the intensity easily as well as I have access to plenty of fresh air.
But yeah, running outside > running inside

I personally don't like the treadmill, never use one. If I do some cardio after lifting its on the bike, elliptical, or rowing machine.

running outside is leaps and bounds better. i used to run on a treadmill and it was boring. i always found myself looking at how much time is left, or how far i've gone, or how many calories i've burned, rather than just going and doing it.
pick a route around your neighborhood and do it, even if you have to walk part of it, dont worry about how long it takes, just as long as you finish. when i run i dont even note how long it took.

I think outside would be better because it forces you to have a set goal. You can't run a mile from your house and decide to stop in the middle of nowhere(I know you can... you know what I mean). You can run on a treadmill for however how long and stop whenever you want. I'd feel more accomplishment running somewhere rather than in one spot.

I enjoy all different forms. But I have physical exams that are ran on a track so therefore if you have a goal to meet. Use whatever your test will use! Each treats your body different and might take time to adapt to that change.

There's nothing wrong with bumping old threads like this because they have no relevance to time.
Oh and yeah I hate treadmills.
And I laugh at people who get gym memberships solely to run in the treadmills.

I heard this and I heard that. It's all crap. People hear sooo much crap and it is darn annoying with everyone asking if it's real or not.
Use your common sense. And lol, bad knees by running on a treadmill? Give me a break man. :s

But like me, I don't have time to outside for exercise as I am very busy with my work. I prefer to walk on a tredmill at home. I bought a lifespan treadmill recently which recommonded by my friends and running on it erverday since bought it.
Tredmill is more suitable for my need.

Outside for sure. I only use treadmills so I can get a quick cardio session right after lifting.

I'd preffer outside over a treadmill.
Treadmills tend to trap you in either a basement or in a gym next to the smelly fat man trying to lose weight, when I find that outdoors I can run a lot more and not even realize it.. probably due to the fact that outside has sites to see to keep your mind off things and the fresh air.

Running outside is much more difficult. Try running on an incline of 3% next time...

I run and this is what I've found.
Treadmills
1) You don't have to use your own willpower or effort to go faster, you just follow along, so it doesn't really translate to real speed unless you already are that fast.
2) Treadmills are much better on the joints
3) Treadmills are rather narrow
4) You quicken/slow down a lot in outside running, unlike a treadmill.
5) You can easily track how far you've gone
6) You can help yourself grow accustomed to a certain pace
Outside
1) Terrain, weather, and elevation play a huge role
2) You must make your own pace
3) The great outdoors surrounds you
4) Often, you don't have the option of stopping running at any time.
5) You must be alert - Music not always the best option
6) You can help yourself grow accustomed to a certain route or race path.

Treadmills do the work of your hamstrings, running outside burns more calories, is less boring, you get some vit. D if its sunny outside, you get a tan and you get fresh air

seriously though.I like outside better. better scenery, fresh air. as for it being better for your knees... I doubt it. No running is bad for your knees if you have good form.
It is a completely different exercise though. Outside your using your legs to push you forward off of the ground. On a treadmill, the ground is moving under you and you just kinda pick your legs up behind you.
