Tips for keeping energy up during Rippetoes workout?

I'm having trouble keeping my energy up during the workout.

For example, yesterday when I started doing the workout I was at 100% energy when doing squats. I was full of energy. However, by the time I got to the 2nd set of the press, I was VERY weak. I was struggling to get through the press. When it came time to do the cleans, I could only get two sets done because I was so weak I felt like I was going to pass out.

I take breaks in between each set (3-5 minutes). I drink water. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Maybe I should lower the weight a little? Maybe I'm squatting too much so it's taking all my energy? I was struggling on the 3rd set of squats, but I got it done.

Would it be wise to maybe lower my squat weight about 10lbs for next workout? The only thing I can think of is I'm lifting to much on my squats which takes away all my energy to do the next exercises properly.

What are your nutrition and rest like outside the gym? Are you playing other sports, doing lots of cardio, getting enough sleep? Are you eating enough to be gaining weight while you're doing SS?

A problem with insufficient energy during the workout often has its root in things outside of the gym.

If all else fails, caffeine is my go-to supplement for maintaining energy during a workout, but the type of training I do involves workouts that sometimes exceed 2 hours, so energy and focus are bigger factors.

I have the same problem, and I definitely get enough sleep and food. I tend to try to eat more carbs in the morning and eclipsing it with protein by the evening, is there anything else I could do? NO-Xplode and Black Powder don't seem to give me enough of a boost.

This is the explanation for both of you guys. I don't care that you think you are getting enough of both, if you are gassing out during a one hour workout, then you aren't.

The only other explanation would be to much weight on the bar in the exercise that you gass on or not enough rest between sets for the weight you are pushing.

dorito:

Why would you stack carbs in the morning? Your body is at that time protein depleted from using up the stores overnight. Not getting enough protein in the system early in the day is one of the worst things you can do if you want to gain muscle. Balance throughout the day with possibly a boost of slow protein at night is better.
