You can definitely lose 30lbs by January 1st, and it doesn't have to be fast. That is 5 and so months away. With an average weight loss of 6-8lbs a month, you'll definitely make it.
Lift, do cardio, and eat right. Check out the Lose Fat for Noobs Sticky at the top of the Nutrition Section, it's a great tool.

1. No Soda or other softdrinks
2. ABSOLUTELY NO FAST FOOD OR BUFFETS
3. If you goto a diner or restaurant eat a salad with chicken on it
4. Count your calories, all of them. You are 5'3 and 150 lbs, you could probably get away with a sub 2000 calorie diet, I would aim for 1800-2000 calories a day
5. Count your protien, all of it. Eat at least 150g of protien a day.
6. Dont eat snack bars like nutrigrain or other "healthy" snack bars, think seriously about cutting your carbs down to less than 100g per day.
7. If you dont like to cook or premake food for the day or you work in a fast paced enviroment where you really dont get more than 10-15 minutes per lunch buy some RTD (ready to drink) protien shakes.
8. I dont know your fitness level, wallet size, or expertise so you have alot of options for exercise. Walking 45-50 minutes per day 3-5 days a week is free, or sign up with a gym and get into any of the free classes they offer. Most medium/large size gyms will have tons of free cardio oriented classes to take.
BOTTOM LINE. If you dont eat well you wont lose weight. If you dont eat well working out wont really "work out" that well for you. If you dont eat well you wont be any healthier.
I like to eat about 1-2 lbs of chicken a day, some nuts, 3-4 protien shakes, vitamins and thats it.

1. Find out how much calories you need to maintain the current 160 lbs with excercise + normal lifestyle first.
2. Either eat less calories to build a deficit or include cardio or weight lifting
(if you don't excercise at all in step #1). (3500 deficit = 1 lb of fat)
* Example:
2000 calories for me to maintain 150 lbs (weight lifting only + desk job), I can either add cardio to burn off 500 calories a day or eat 500 calories less to big weekly deficit of 3500 a week to achieve my 1 lb of weight loss, or you can do both (eat 250 less and do cardio 250 etc..)
3. Use this calorie calculator as rough estimation, experiement for 2 weeks to see how weight your dropping per week and adjust accordingly in calories or excercise to drop your consistant weight that your aiming for!

Hope you reach your goal.

not necessary in the extreme and no, lifting is way more important than cardio for fat loss and building an aesthetically pleasing body
eat slightly below maintenance, dont shy from carbs and lift hard and smart and limit your cardio

Thanks man, I do know how to drop weight and drop it fast. I am very good and shedding lbs, just not that good at keeping them off once I hit my goal.
Its kinda like paying off your credit cards, once you hit 0 you get that urge to spend a little and before you know it your back where you started. Now that i'm older and a little more mature I think I can manage myself a little better. My best drop so far is 80 lbs in a tad under 4 months.

credit card, well said! let's use that analogy further, you use your CC to make a 20 dollar purchase, then miss a payment, miss another payment eventually your interest has compounded to the point that makes your goal of 0 again seem farther and farther away. I find the same with working out, if i miss a day that wasn't planned as an off or light cardio day, i feel that my interest just compounded and now my next payment has to be that much more.....make your payments, your body and health is the greatest investment!
