too much cardio=muscle lose?
hey,
well so far been doing cardio 4 days a week 10-15 before my workout on elliptical (at a fairly quick speed) and 20 min on treadmill after workout : 3min at 3.5mph then 1 min at 11.5mph then 3min at 3.5mph again then 1 min 10.5mph and so and so forth till i hit 20 min. , (also switch it up on treadmill by walking 4.0mph at a high incline level 11-12 for 20 min with some running on the incline) .. Want to start jogging in the morning around 2 miles a day and then slowly build on that, wondering if I will be burning up fat (which in sure i will) but also if I will be burning up muscle by doing the extra cardio?
thanx

Well, for starters, I feel it would be more effective for fat burning results to do one longer cardio session than the two shorter sessions you are presently doing. Excellent question in regards to burning muscle. You want to ensure your heart rate is remaining in the "fat burning zone" for the majority of your cardio session. Last but not least, you will want to make sure your nutrition plan supports your fitness efforts. Make sure your are getting enough protein to support maintaining or buidling. best wishes and good luck

dont do your cardio before lifting, try spliting your work out up if possible do some cardio in the morning to get the metabolism burning and then lift later in the afternoon or evening. sometimes peoples schedules dont allow it but just my preference

i fell (and thought) that by doing a light workout in the begin for workout helps me keep my heart rate at a fat burning zone through out my workout. Also have been getting enough protein in my body about 60% (power) and 40% (whole food)

I'm a BIG believer in cardio. Do it every session It helps me to stay lean and keeps me looking defined, a good diet is a must of course.

Excessive cardio without a proper dietary base will lead to muscular catabolism.

Agreed. The fat burning zone is hard to comprehend but I recently got a good understanding of it after doing some reading. Although you will burn less calories with your heart rate at 120-140bpm as opposed to 160+ you will be burning stored fat at that heart rate level, where as at a higher level you will begin to break down muscle for energy. You may burn more calories at the higher heart rate, but the kind of calories you want to burn will come from that lower heart rate "fat burning" zone.

LOL
no. If you you don't have high enough calories you lose muscle.
Your normal cals without cardio are say 3000 cals. Expect to go up to 3400-3600 to deal with the extra cardio.

thanks for the tip , well try to eat more . I dont eat enough as is . diet follows:
breakfeast =bowl of total with cup fat free skim milk - glass of oj and piece of fruit
3hrs later two pices of whole wheat bread with reduced fat peant butter or a turkey sandwich with a slice of cheese also with mustard and reduced fat mayo. piece of fruit.
3hrs later same thing as before.
dinner would vary chicken breast with vegs and rice or turkey burger.
also have 2 protein shakes a day one somewhere at mid day and second after workout..Also take fish oils daily with meals.
What can i eat to get the calories in me. I sometimes have to force myself to eat cuz i am not hungry?

Get in some protein after your cardio. I've also heard that Black Tea is a great anti-catabolic....

That was input, and it answered your question.
Failure to comprehend is your fault.

Personal
Personally for me i was lifting weights through High School from September to now... but i had a Great downfall. I started track and i was getting faster and faster as the year went on and toned my let muscles more but the bulkyness went down so therefor which suck but my squat went down i was able to do 335lbs 1 rep. but after i was only able to do 305.. so thats 30lb's just from running.
