hi I'm new to this
just thought I would post on this site as I am wanting to get back into the gym and get back into shape after a long term illness from the winter.
I suffered endocarditus, a bacterial illness on a aortic valve I had replaced 7 years ago, then I contracted sceptecemia, blood poisioning, and I had a stroke to the frontal part of my brain, and had pneumonia then had to have my heart valve replaced for a tissue valve all in the space of 3 months!!!!! I was released from hospital on the 6th feb . As you can see I have been through the wars but while I was learning to walk again I decided I wanted to get back to the gym and get back my fitness ( I lost 2 and a half stone in hospital). I suffer from seizures and am on epilim but have not as yet done any sort of cardio rehab due to my neurologist saying he wants me to have a scan on my brain to check everything is okay. Once I have done the rehab I can join the local leisure world in Colchester as they have instructors who are part of the leap campaign and can hopefully help me back to full fitness.
The reason for my thread is once I start training is it okay to use a protein drink and if so what sort should I use. With all the things that have happened to me I do not want to put myself at risk

Fug,
Welcome to the O35 boards. You most definately have had a battle or two, but your attitude seems good and that makes any future bright...
In your condition, I'd say always, always, always, check with your physician before using any suppliment, even the protein. I see no harm in it, but I'm not familiar with all you illnesses. Play it safe, check with your doctor first.
Again... welcome and good luck with your goals!!!

Wow Fug your fighting spirit is to be highly commended. Definitely ask your own doctor before taking anything that you are not used to because after coming this far it would be horrible to have any more setbacks. Keep up the good work and let us know how you are progressing with it

New here, just wanted to say hey. I started lifting seriously in 2000, was mostly focused in being a non-competitive bodybuilder. In about 2005 I fell out of it due to family issues that came up - it just was left on the back burner.
In early 2008 I decided I was tired of being thin (fast metabolism, had dropped down to 175 lbs @ 6'2) and started working my ass off. Got my nutrition nailed down and I try and bring an overwhelming amount of intensity to every workout.
Currently sitting at 6'2" 215 lbs @ 13% bf. My goals have transformed from bodybuilding to increasing my strength and GPP.

New here too.
Hey, I'm another newbie and I wanted to say hi.
Same story as a bunch of other guys, worked out in my early 20s then life happened (Wife, kid, career, etc..)
I just started back to a gym last week but I have been lurking on this board for a while getting information for a while now.
I have a long road ahead of me but I am confident and already feeling better.
There are so many motivating stories on this site to keep me going.
I am going to be one of those stories!

Hello everyone I have enjoyed and learned so much here.
I'm 42 years old and 5' 8" 280 I was 340 pounds and have lost 60 pounds so far, my goal is 200 pounds.
I have a inactive thyroid
High Blood pressure
Water Retention "Edema" legs and chest after loosing the 60 pounds and exercising is now gone.
I had to see a heart specialist and do a stress test, Stress test turn out good no problems.
I take a water pill and a cholesterol pill. The Doc said if next lab test is good they would remove these also.
I have been eating clean food and drinking water since April and loving it, I have not had any cravings for junk food or the Mountain Dew that I was additive too.
There are some really good people here and the transformation is very inspiring. Thank You
The funny part is now I feel skinny and good about my self until I look in the mirror. I still have a long was to go but I will do it !
I do have a question, the first 2 times going to the gym I would get a sick feeling for about 15 min after the workout and then after that it never does it again.

Newbie here and returning to the gym after a 23 year "break"!?!
I'm gonna be 45 in a few weeks, but I'm feeling good and I'm desperate to get some level of fitness and shape back again. (fingers crossed)
I'm 5'11 and currently weigh 17 stone, I weighed 24 stone in Feb (this year) but due to a stomach bypass have lost 7 stone already, I've achieved this with nothing more than diet and taking the dogs for a walk.
I've been given the "greenlight" to start training which is why I'm here, the site looks great, and I'm looking forward to re-educating myself to the gym/suppliments etc.
I hope to find some answers here, their are so many suppliments, I haven't a clue as to what I need (basics) to kickstart my programme, I'm looking forward to reading some articles etc, in the hope of helping myself, but any help from you guys already on board, would be really appriciated.
Thanks in advance, all the best,
Jme.

Turning 35 in November but I'd rather hang out with the older crowd any day.
Worked out since I was 16 - I'm not a bodybuilder but my interest in the activity goes waaaay beyond casual. Found this forum a long time ago and forgot about it. Work is slow so I've been lurking here again....

Being older but unaware of that fact gives me strength. I hope to make this body building .com a part of my overall experience.

Been lurking awhile, thought I'd chime in and say hello.
Turned 40 in December. A lifetime computer geek and couch potato, I decided last year (at age 39) that I wanted to hit 40 in the best shape of my life. Measured in at 6', 205 lbs, and started easy by watching what I was eating and how much, then added in exercise. Did the Power 90 routine for 3 months (not P90x, but its much easier precursor), and saw big gains. Found BB.com and by the time I hit 40, I was down to 175 lbs, and BF of 13% or so - and easily, easily in the best shape of my life ever.
This year has been more difficult, and I've read that isn't uncommon once you pass that "everything is new" phase. I got down to 168 lb early this year, but decided I wanted more muscle, and had hit the spot where I couldn't drop weight and add muscle at the same time, so I tried a bulk phase. Got up to 185 (and by my somewhat shaky math, added about 3-4 lbs of muscle), and now I'm working on cutting that and seeing where I end up. I'm down to 180, but with a little chunk of fat in the stomach that I'm working like mad to get rid of.
I'm loving the fit life. As a household we've converted almost completely to all whole foods (a huge change for us), as well as regular exercise and activities (I'm playing basketball for the first time in decades - and not totally sucking). I've never felt physically better in my life. I've turned into a bit of a supplement junkie and spend way too much time in the bb.com store and at wheycheap, but I consider that a small price for feeling (and looking) the way I do.

Hello
Hi to all, I'm 48...5' 6' and been training for 2+ years now. Originally 200+lb, now down to 170lb with a lot more muscles than when I started. Got my fat pounds away earlier by mostly doing cardio, at one time down to 158lb, before taking up weights and gradually to the present poundage.
My stronger exercises are backs, triceps and legs. Right now, looking for a good second-hand power rack. Any suggestions?
Thanks...best wishes to all of ya...!

Im not a teen, Im not over 35, Im not a female, Im not a power lifter, and I am not a personal trainer. But after reading these forums I think this is the best fit for me.
I am 28 years old 6'2" 210lbs. I was always a skinny kid growing up and I could never gain weight. Well the last 5 years I have put weight on and not the good kind of weight. In a strange coincidence I got married 5 years ago. I think what my true downfall was having been in a desk job for the last 3 years. I used to be pretty active and my walking weight was about 185lbs.
Im here because I want to make a change in my lifestyle. I have never been into weight lifting but I did start the 5x5 program about a month ago and now Im hooked. I have been reading the forums to soak up as much knowledge as I can. My strength is pathetic right now but in time I will improve. The area where I am struggling right now is with my diet and my lack of education on supplements.
Im hoping to get down to 190lbs by the end of the year.

Been lurking for a bit and thought I would say hello.
Some stats: Dropped about 30 lbs since last Sept. Did it the "old fashioned way"...eat less (and right) and exercise more. Basically just ran, push ups and sit ups. Cut out soda's and limited fast food.
Biggest accomplishment: Did 1.5 miles in 18 mins back in Sept 2008. In April 2009 did it in 12.5 mins.
Looking forward to posting and learning more. Goals are to gain muscle/strength and overall fitness.

New here. 41yo. started seriously lifting when I was 18 and went from 145lbs to 215lbs in a little over a yr. Been training on and off ever since.
Started training again about 3months ago. Doing fine, lost about 10lbs fat. hope to lose about 15more lbs fat and still gain in lifts.

Another new guy
Hi all,
First, thanks to everyone for all the great information and advice. I've been lurking for a while and I'm learning quite a bit.
I was pretty good about working out regularly through my teens and into my mid-20s, always with good results. Nothing hard core, but I've always been able to gain size pretty easily (along with being able to put on weight easily - UGH!). I've always been described as having a pretty muscular build.
My 30s for the most part were a blur of inactivity and overindulgence. So much so that I went from 205 lbs at my wedding to 305 lbs on my 39th birthday. Thankfully I'm down about 80 pounds since then and back to living a reasonably healthy life. I can still lose more weight (I should probably be down around 205) , but I'm not liking the loss of muscle and the effects of gravity that come with getting (slightly) older, so that's not enough on its own. I don't want to wind up "skinny fat" so, its time to get back into the gym with the weights.
Looking forward to spending more time here - learning and growing!

Core Training
Trying to locate information on core training exercises--need help.
I'm 36, full time nursing student, and look forward to joining the US Navy's Nursing Corps. The only problem is that I need to get into shape in the worst way. If anyone out there can give me some honest & helpful advice I sure would appreciate it.
