Today...
8 miles! Took about an hour and a half. Was playing around with pacing, alternating between easier pacs on the hills and stretching my stride out in the flats. Funny thing, when I finished my 3rd lap (running around the "sjort lake"- 2 miles each time around) and was closing out 6 miles I'm thinking "man, I could go 10". A mile later I'm thinking "man, I have anothr mile to go" Really slow steppd the last mile, but it was all good.
Painter-
wasn't your half this weekend?
|
Yes the half was today and my previous post took about an hour to write because of interuptions, including the ex calling me to 'gloat' that 'her' daughter kicked my ass today. It is all good because running is something my daughter learnt from me.
Sounds like you got in some good mileage this weekend. I know what you mean when your body changes your mind on how much farther you can run. LOL
What style of MA are you taking?

As I mentioned she has been running for a while but never farther than 5 miles and she had never entered a race before. I had no doubt she could do the run and the following pictures says it all, a proud father with his daughter ......
.....Now for the rest of the story. When we got to the starting area we made a beeline for the washrooms and the line ups were so bad that when we got back to the start the race had begun. It still took a minute to walk to the official start area so we hadn't missed anything.
We started off having to go slow in the crowd and I told Nicole that the crowd would thin out before too long. She was running my pace so she wouldn't burn out and her goal was only to finish, preferably under 3 hours. When we got to the 10km point (almost half way) I could tell she was holding back so I told her to go. She was a bit worried because we still had a bit more than half the race to do but I told her she was running to strong at that point to hold back.
I told her to race the clock and not me. I said if she ran out of steam I would be coming behind her so there were no worries there. Well she started to move forward and she only looked back to me once and she was gone.
My 22 year old daughter kicked my ass big time. In the last 11 kms she put 16 minutes between us. She ran a 5:38 km overall compared to my 6:23 km and that was with her running slower the first 10 kms. I am so very proud of her accomplishment today and we both imagine what she could do if she trains for these events.
My overall time (chip) was 2:14:38 which is a 15 minute improvement from my last half marathon at the biginning of May '09. I am pleased with my progress and I plan on shaving another 10 miutes off when Nicole & I run our next half Aug, 9th. I also wonder how badly she is going to beat me on that run.

Wow that's awesome!!

Rod, Congrats to you and your daughter. She is a beautiful young woman and I'm sure you are a VERY proud father
I finally am getting back to running after my groin strain. The damn thing is taking forever to heal. I'm guessing it is at about 90% right now. I was away on a cruise last week and ran a mile 2 different times to try it out. Once on the track and once on the treadmill. It seemed OK so tonight I ran 1 mile, then walked 1/4 and ran the last 3/4. I averaged a 8.5 min mile while I was running so I'm happy with that. Just need to get my lungs back/

Thanks and yes I am very proud of her.
Glad to hear that you are getting better and that you can run a bit more. The lungs will come along fine once you can train regularly.

Tae Kwon Do.
Was supposed to test last summer but busted my toe up real bad sparring. Already told my instructor that I'm going to do the minimal amount that I can get away with for this. Already have a black in HTM (Muay Thai-based style, Viet Namese interpretation)

Newish runner/weighlifter here wanting to say hello! Long story short I've lost 77lbs in the last 9 months, started running again in Dec (I used to run in the Army), started lifting weights in Feb, I ran my 1st 5K in Mar, 10K in May & I just got my 5K under 30 min this weekend (29:14) whoohoo!
I'm training for the Detroit 1/2 marathon in Oct and I'm trying to balance my new love of weighlifting along with all the running. I'm goofing off at work so I need to take some time to read more of this thread but any tips on finding balance would be appreciated.
Looking forward to getting to know you guys!

congrats on the sub 30 5k 77 lbs is fantastic...congrats to you. As far as balancing your running and weightlifting, you will find it is all about your diet. Making sure you get the nutrients you need to acheive your goals. I'm no expert on nutrition by any means...but there are plenty of helpful folks around that will be able to lead you in the right direction.

I totally agree! Diet will be very important balancing your weight training and running because.. at least to me, they take different "diet powers".. You will find that balance and run with it! *pun intended
77lbs! that's sooo awesome! Keep it up and good luck with the 1/2 marathon. I'm doing a 1/2 in Sept and am also trying to balance the 2.. However, I haven't been training with my running as strict as I did last month, so I'm going to lay off the weight training a bit until I can get my miles back up and until after the marathon.. I've narrowed it down to 2 days weight training, the rest focusing on the run! I'm sure you will kill it!

Thanks Paul! I've had to tweek my diet plenty of times so that the weight continues to melt off. I'm meticulous about counting calories and tracking my macros (I food journal every day). 3 weeks ago started to bump up the weekly mileage from 9 to 12 and now 15 and I noticed I was getting very tired when I was lifting. I was eating 1600 cal (40/30/30) so last week I upped it to 1800 and I've noticed more energy already. It's still 200 under my maintence so I'll still lose just slower but I'm cool with that.
My diet is pretty clean but not a strict weight lifting type diet, I eat 3 meals, 2 small snacks, and I drink protein after my workouts (I still drink a shake with my breakfast on the mornings I don't workout).
This is my workout schedule, I'd welcome some feedback:
Sun - Off or a leisure bike ride or hike with dogs
Mon - AM Run 3-4 miles / PM 1hr Upperbody
Tue - PM 30min with Trainer full body (plyo's & supersets)
Wed - AM Run 3-4 / PM 1hr lowerbody
Thur - PM 30min with Trainer full body (plyo's & supersets)
Fri - Off
Sat - Long run 6-7 miles

Hi blue.jaye - just saw your post as I posted a new one about my diet. I'm definitely a believer that you can't out exercise a crappy diet. The weights and running kind of contradict each other but I hope to find some balance (ooh and on top of that I'm still looking to lose a little more weight).
Good luck to you too on the 1/2. What training program are you following? I'm using one from Hal Higdon?s website I've just doubled up some of the weeks since my race isn't until October.

Nathan Mosher has an excellent article out here about strength training for endurance athletes. For those of us who are running long distance, he recommends extensive interval training. I started using it last week. Also, Wannabebig recommends balancing lifting with running as well, stating that if you run 4-5x per week you should keep your strength training to 2 days per week (that article is linked on the first page, I should find the other one and let Kevin check it out to see if he thinks it should be there as well).

I am following nike+'s training since I run with my ipod/nike +. If I ever do a full marathon I'd like to do a team in training or something along those lines! I'll have to check out that website you mentioned.

First, a big welcome to some new names I see posting here! Second....ROd, congrats!!! That's a great pic, and you have a lovely daughter. Funny, but I was thinking she wasn't going to be able to run as fast as you!
I gotta make it short, as we're about to go out to dinner, but I ran yesterday and today. 85* at 7:30AM...hot as hades and really brutal. Anyway, getting it done . I'll catch up on the rest of what everyone has posted later tomorrow. Geez, I may be turning arounf and coming back down here with my son on Friday! (for the 4th of July) Fireworks down here are unequaled anywhere I've ever seen them in my life. Til' later.......

I'm not going to complain about that! So far the 1800 cal is working out much better, I'm just gonna have to give it a couple of weeks to see if I can still lose at that level.

Congrats on your progress,ya it is possible to run and lift weights,I manage to do it.I do think enough calories is a major factor.I like the running for the fat loss but don't care for the super skinny runner's body.I probably over do it,I lift 5 days a week and run 5 or 6 days.Anywhere from 5k up to 20k.On days off from work run in am and lift in afternoon.on work days run just before working out.Just did my first 10k race 46:50, about 4 mins faster than my best training time(excitement of competing i would guess.) Oh ya,only started running in dec 2008 too, lifted for 8+ years tho.

Geez, takes time off and comes back and gallops out a 8.5 pace like a freaking gazelle! I hate you!!! Welcome back

You're welcome. And btw, yes, you have made some progress that is nothing short of awesome! Much respect
Go away for a few days ..... and it's overwhelming to come back to 300+ emails, several PMs, and a bunch of posts here to know what's happening . (I just used my father's PC to post the the past 2 times and didn't really have the time...or inclination...to read everything).
Anyway, Daniela....I'll be glad to help you with diet info down the road if you need some help. Looks like you're going to stick with what you're doing for now since it's working?
I failed to mention, but my two runs in FL were each 3 mile runs. I felt great on the 1st 2 miles on each, but it got brutal after that. The heat index just suddenly destroyed me. Got back home a while ago....have a workout scheduled for tomorrow (might end up doing a full body routine)....will run Thurs morning...and actually may be going back to FL Friday at 6AM. I'll know for sure by tomorrow night. My other sister, two of my nephews and my oldest son will be down there for the 4th, and my poor mother loves to have me around because I spoil her and do all the cooking for everyone when it comes to dinner (always grilling), so she really wants me to come back down. I feel spent, but I know it'll be fun too. Seriously, the 4th down there in both east & west directions on the beach as far as you can see...the Olympic opening ceremonies have nothing on this place!
Oh, and a guy got stung by a ray (in the general area) and was sent to the hospital and is OK.

gracias m'man!
I can't imagine running in FL this time of year. It's been warming up here, but still not as hot as it normally gets this time of year.
Got 5 in today, total character builder. Knees and calves were stiff for almost 4 miles, finally loosened up the last mile. Turned it in in 58 minutes, which was right what I was targeting.
Check this out-
in the last 4 days, I've run 3x for a total of 17 miles (8 on Sunday!)
...it's coming...

Painter man Congrats!!
Lets See its been a while but I ran on Sunday. right about 3 miles and right about 22 min. I was pretty happy with that.
Also I finally broke down and bought a pair of good running shoes (I had been needing them for a while.) Brooks Glycerin 7. They feel great. Now if it would stop raining so I could get some running done.
Also I found a 10K that I'm planning to run in on Aug. 1. And I think I'm going to try to run a marathon later this year if I can find one that fits in my schedule. On top of that I think I'm going to try Triathlons (anyone ever done one of these?) One near where I'm going to be in 6 weeks and I'm going to give it a go. So I need to shift training and prlly gotta change my diet around some. Hoping to figure out some of that over the long weekend for me.
Keep running everyone!!

Oh ya,only started running in dec 2008 too, lifted for 8+ years tho.

Hi Kingoftroys, Thank you much! I agree with you on not liking the typical skinny runner's body. I'm not trying to look like a pro BB but I do like the athletic look and like the muscle I'm developing. Like you, running is good for my fat loss but I'm starting to enjoy it more and more just for the run itself and the stress relief. Congrats on your 10K time! I did a 1:03 for my 1st 10K in May. Next 10K is in Aug and I'm shooting for a sub 1 hour.

Hi dbx, I'm sticking with what I'm doing with the diet for now. It's been 1 week eating at 1800 cals, up from 1600, I feel much better and I even lost 1.5 lbs. Can't complain so far but I'm always open to suggestions. Based on what I've posted is there something you wanted to recommend that I'm missing?
Thanks :-)

Hope everybody that's running today has a good one.
I'm heading off to the Y to hit the pool with my son tonight. Maybe the sauna as well. Definitely looking forward to it.

Very good time! And yeah, we post pics just to dress up the thread a bit, as well as try to relate what are surroundings are when we run . Post some whenever you can. I like the lake pic, but I'd hate to fall into it .

Leg day for me this morning, but I'm looking forward to running with approx 65* temps and less humidity tomorrow! This was a nice weather change I came back to. Yes, it was 95* here today, but it was actually 65* this morning at 8am! Woo-hoo!

took my first neighborhood run today. basically the run with the worst hill Ran 2 miles tonight. Calfs were tight from leg day yesterday and never really got loose. Never really found my stride either tonight. Ran it in 21:30. Not real happy with the time, but it will come back soon enough.

21:30 for two.... now we're talkin'! (j/k kinda )
Yep, it'll come back soon enough.
Man, what a nice break for me this morning; it was 65*& 100%H when I set out and 70* & 80%H when I got back from a 5 mile run. It was refreshing compared to FL runs and even the hotter morning runs I've had here at home this past month. I ran 1 mile steady and then ran 1.2 changing tempo. I actually thought I might be on pace for a record, but I was soon reminded how my awareness of pace sucks, as I saw I was 55 seconds behind my PR at the 2.2 mark. That kinda messed with my head, and I ended up walking, running hard, walking etc., all the way back. It was actually a great run for me though, so no real complaints! Especially after a Leg Day yesterday.
Distance - 5 Miles
Time- 47:17 (3:07 over standing PR for this distance for me)
151/168
806
70*/80%H
Oh, and I'm not going to FL Frid, and will stay put here in ATL .

If there was a local one I'd do it. Truth is....I haven't looked for one. And also, I wouldn't want to run one in the summer....unless it started at 7AM or something. And then....it's not really a priority for me. Have I made enough excuses yet? (*hears Rod's footsteps*). As corny as this may sound, I really don't care about running in a race with a sh!tload of people. I just enjoy doing my own thing, you know? But I'll also admit, I guess it'd be nice to be able to say I did one that was "official".
