This is my 3rd year competing. I started in 2007 at age 45. This year I competed in the Northern Kentucky in March and placed 1st in my class!
The first year I did shows from March straight until November. By then, my mind and body were like mush. My body didn't respond to a thing. Since then I've been a little more selective and this year I am taking off some time to compete in July in Pittsburgh in the Master's Nationals. I'm at 118 (from 110) and seven weeks out. I'm happy with the weight gain, increased muscle, and maintaining about 12% body fat. Even if I don't drop any more fat I'm happy with how I've filled out, as I heard one competitor say, "the judges want to see your anatomy, not study it!"
At age 47 and after four children, twins, and trying to maintain a balance between competing and living, I'm pretty happy where I'm at right now.
Good luck to everyone out there!
I'm going to add you to my BodySpace Inspiration list! Congrats on the 1st place victory, what did you have to eat after the contest!?!? You're definitely a role model for many women here and a true testament that it CAN BE DONE! Way to go!

Doing next two shows October and November 2010. Going to take this time to put on some muscle and lean up a lot more!
Just want to let you know that anyone can do this. I am a mom, I work, went to school for 13 hours all when I was dieting down and dieted for 19 weeks! I was quite fluffy! It takes a lot though! But, well worth it!
Good luck to you all..I know what those shaking muscles feel when standing at the curtain ready to walk on stage!
Hint: Practice in your shoes! If this is your first show, don't under estimate how much you really need to practice in your shoes! When you are on stage, as I learned, your feet feel like they are cemeted to the stage floor! So, just make sure you are really comfortable with your turns and holding poses. Sometimes you have to hold them a long time.. It is way different when you are by yourself posing, compared to having 6-8, or however many judges staring at you...Its an awesome experience! Take advantage of it! It is over before it begins!
You may not have placed as well as you would have liked, but the real satisfaction comes from proving to yourself that you did it I know that sounds way korny, but its true. I can't imagine having kids and competing, I really look up to those women that compete with children and hope to one day be just as dedicated to my family as I am to my fitness now. And you're right about practicing in shoes LOL - I always tell the girls I help to even vacuum in those things - hey sometimes their bf/hubby's actually enjoy that! HA

None, I was planning to do my first naturalcompetition this year. But the federation is now working together with a other (non-natural)federation. So no chance for me between the steriod users.
November 7th..Vegas classic
November 28th...NPC Western regional in Arizona
December 5th...Excaliber
Have a new trainer this time and hoping to do better than the last 2 shows. Placed both 2nd and 3rd in Jr. Masters, but having problems qualifying for nationals in my open category.
Gonna do it this fall!

lol! we are too funny in this sport. your nerves will calm down once you are in the show. i find that get my most nervous at the beginning of my prep. my head likes to play games of did we start early enough. then when i see my abs coming in, i know i am track.
this year is going to be interesting as i am striving to get a glimpse of the butterfly in my glutes. so i changed my plans to do only one show for 2009 (lee labrada's show in stafford)and prep come feb for FAME Houston...which is in May. i figure i can hold pretty close to my conditioning without gaining too much over the holidays and do that show.
stop being so nervous. you will do great in your show. and cannot wait to see your pics.

Thanks. I cant help but be nervous lol. It's my first show and the scale number has been driving me up the wall. I know I need to relax but I just.... yeah I just keep looking for changes that I dont know if I see. Others have told me they see them but I'm pretty hard on myself.
When show time comes though I know it'll be all excitement

take pics. those are very helpful, but you will look so different on show day. we have all been there. the pic in my avatar was 4.5 weeks out from my second show. by show day, i have little glimpses of my top glutes. couldn't see that in my pics at home. so know once you get your color on and under the lights you will see things you have never seen on your body before. and that's the fun part!
