For those of you with desk jobs...how do you do it?

I am currently training for a figure competition but I have one major issue...i work at a desk job where i am required to be at my desk constantly for 8 hours a day. I try to stand up as much as possible and i do try to get out a lunch time and walk but with the heat this summer, a lunchtime walk really isn't that great of an idea (it was about 104 degrees outside today).

Now i do get 45 minutes to an hour of training in 4-5 times a week plus a 4 hour martial arts class on sundays. I also take my dogs for a walk every night when i get home from work for about 45 minutes (I use the walk to do a little bit of interval training sometimes too). Plus when i get home i have this thing where i do try to avoid sitting for long periods of time...i don't watch TV very much and when i get home i usually just make dinner, walk the dogs and go to bed (i need 8-9 hours of sleep)

I just can't help but feel bad having a job where i sit on my butt all day long. I am an active person and as much as i don't like desk jobs, right now I am not being too picky and i get paid very well.

For those of you fit girls that have jobs that require you to be stagnant daily, how to you maximize your fitness in those 8 hours? Certain things i have considered are bringing a yoga ball to sit on at work, bringing in some 15lbs dumbells so when i am just sitting bored i can do some curls when i have down time (which right now I have a lot of)...or would that just be weird?

I think you're worried about nothing. You're getting your exercise in outside of work. As long as you periodically get up, walk around, stretch, you're fine. You may prefer a more active job, but this isn't hurting you physically. And I would not do any type of workout, however brief. Overtraining a muscle group is not good.

I have a desk job, but I love my work so it doesnt really bother me. I generally bike to work, and I lift weights, play rugby and football, so sitting doesnt really bother me much.

As long as you're following your diet and training program...having a desk job isn't an issue at all.

I worked at a desk job for years.

I have an office setting and work 12 hours a day every single day. When I am tired from sitting I just get up and go chat with other coworkers or just walk around. Sometimes when I am really sore from my workouts I just roll out my yoga mat and stretch in the office. I also combine two of my break periods to do abs.

I keep a set of weighted resistance bands at my desk. Sometimes i'm not able to get out for a walk, so I pull them out..I bought them at SportsAuthority for $25.
