While working out hasn't saved my life, it is a huge part of a lifestyle change I had almost 2 years ago, it has helped extended my life this long. The good things are the new physical confidence I have, the rare chiropractor visits now versus weekly before, better diet, admiring glances from time to time and more stamina. Be well and breathe deep.

When I read the title of this thread, this is what came to my mind instantly: bodybuilding has saved my life. I was on a path of self destruction physically. Through conditioning, nutrition and discipline I have altered a most certain premature demise.

I honestly don't know what I would do without working out anymore. I don't even remember what I did with my time. I think I made up fake errands to sneak out to smoke.

Still a newbie here but I have found so much help and support on bb.com and while by bodybuilding is in it's infant stage, it has been amazing what it has done for me both physically and emotionally ( it's great to feel strong and lifting relieves so much stress.)
Looking forward to the journey.

On a serious note, it makes you more conscious of what you put in your body.
On a not so serious note, you notice what trash others put in theirs.

After yesterdays deadlift session, its made it difficult to bend over today.
Its made my wife pi#sed off.
Its made me feel physically full of energy.
Its made me feel better about myself.
Its made my wife pi#sed off.
Its made me feel healthy.
Its made my wife pi#sed off.
I love it.

I hear ya! A few months ago, the doctor was jotting down my basic information when he asked me for my age. I said, "45." He quickly looked up from the clipboard and said, "Really?!" (It was as if the DOCTOR wondered what I knew that he didn't! HA!)
Seriously, I love going to the gym to get PUMPED! It's great to look in the mirror and think, "Dude, you so rock!"

CTGBLUE in Escort ZX-2 vs semi
Escort gets knocked 50yds down road after being hit in the side by 50mph loaded semi truck that gomer did not see coming in the dark of the morning
ctgblue winds up on stretcher in hospital, having 2 cat scans to 'make sure' his back is not broken (they could not believe I survived at all)
Had I not been doing 700lb rack deadlifts for a while, I would be a cripple or dead
Brain surgery 5 weeks later from slow bleed subdural hematoma (largest ever seen in consciuos person in that hospital) if not for great bloodflow, I'd have stroked out a week before the MRI
again, could not believe I was walking when they came dow after seeing MRI
recovered in 7 weeks back in the gym full recovery that spring
so it literally saved my life

I will take a slightly different angle on this. Weight training helped me get my teaching job 21 years ago.
I went into a job interview for a history position in which I was told several hundred people had applied for (yes...affluent suburban school district). The principal asked me a few questions about my teaching credentials, then said the most unexpected thing to me..."I see you’ve managed a gym before."
We spent the next half hour talking about weight training and fitness. He finally asked if I would be willing to run the strength training program for the athletic department. It was basically a year round coaching position which added quite a bit of money to the teaching contract.
I'm sure there were better and more qualified teachers who had applied for the history position, but my weight training background was what separated me from the others. He offered me the job, and I've been there ever since.

not truly a body builder, these days more of a runner who strength trains.
BUT...that being said...
makes me painfully more aware of how many people out there are in truly lousy physical condition. I generally go for a walk everyday around lunch time, head down to the Inner Harbor and people watch...
watch the **** that people put into their bodies
watch people smoke
watch the fat parents steering their fat kids around (and feel sorry for the kids)
watch the young fat guys waddle around (few things more depressing then seeing a guy in his early 20's who is auditioning to be a heart attack victim by 38)
...but most of all...
makes me appreciate how different I and all of us who are dedicated to living a healthy lifestyle are. We're the oddballs. I love being an oddball.

BB saved my life. I was a fat-assed obese slob. High blood pressure, high cholesterol. No energy. No positive outlook in life. HAD a hard time getting little willie to stand at rigid attention. That was a year and a half ago.
I joined BB forum, learned lots of things, I was motivated by ex-slobs turned studs. The rest was history. I no longer take meds. I feel like 18 again. I'm not afraid to take my shirt off in public. Women look - both hot chicks, and unfortunately toothless fugly ones as well.
I'm trying to spread the gospel by being a part-time trainer.
Guys, this is our calling! Let's keep setting the example for the majority of the sedentary lazy-ass populaiton.

I was VERY close to having to be put on cholesterol meds. Once I started exercising however, my levels of "bad stuff" dropped, and "good stuff" shot up. My doc was flabbergasted, and told me to keep doing what I was doing. Losing 50+ lbs of blubber was the best thing that ever happened to me. I'd like to add that back now, but in muscle instead of fat this time.

As you hit your 30s you start to see friends become quite overweight, unable to walk three blocks without sweating, diaorrhea every day from a high fat diet, often having colds and flu, facing adult onset diabetes, constant back pain, can't play with the kids, too tired and weak and disgusted with themselves to have sex with their lover/spouse, maybe heart trouble in their 40s...
So the better condition is measured not only by what happens, but what doesn't happen.
Overall, endurance and weight training combined with a healthy but tasty diet lead to a better quality of life in those everyday things.

Very well put Kyle.
I was diagnosed with depression before I started BBing, it has helped me keep this at bay without medication (I said no to the meds).
