You're not going to be able to tell really just from packaging unless it's pretty blatant.
What's lame is that cologne only costs a few bucks to make, but the branding make it so highly inflated.
Tip: Spray cologne on hotspots on your body, and remember heat rises which is what activates the cologne. So spray on your ankles, behind your knees, lower back, elbows, and neck. I also like to spray into my hands and put get behind my ears when going out. Because always lean into to your ear to hear you speak, and then they get a nice whiff.

Just to add on, hair is pretty good at keeping scents, I personally dislike it, but many I know find it very easy to keep a scent in your hair.

I could imagine that being bad for your hair since cologne has alcohol in it. I don't think I would do that...

I don't buy brandname fragrances. I go to a perfumer and get perfume extract. The difference in quality is very noticable. I get 3mL bottles and they last months because you have to use so little.
For the unaware: cologne =/= men's fragrance. It just means "Eau de Cologne" which is a weak perfume.
From Wikipedia:
Perfume extract (Extrait): 15-40% (IFRA: typical 20%) aromatic compounds
Eau de Parfum (EdP), Parfum de Toilette (PdT): 10-20% (typical ~15%) aromatic compounds. Sometimes listed as "eau de perfume" or "mill?sime".
Eau de Toilette (EdT): 5-15% (typical ~10%) aromatic compounds
Eau de Cologne (EdC): Chypre citrus type perfumes with 3-8% (typical ~5%) aromatic compounds
Splash and After shave: 1-3% aromatic compounds

Perfume is the strongest and therefore the longest lasting fragrance available. Just a bit will net you hours of scent -- days actually. Cologne is just a bit weaker and is sometimes mischaracterized as a men's product.

Usually the perfume I use still has scent the next day, even after a workout and a couple showers.

Naw, nothing to really damage you, like I said I don't like to, but you know if you spray it into the air then walk into it if you know what I mean.

My favorite is Burberry "Brit", has the longest lasting smell out of anything I've tried.
Versace "Blue Jeans" is another good one with a unique smell.
