I have seen people say that the 6-pack is all one muscle and can be trained using 1 or 2 exercises.
Then I see people say that you need to work "upper" and "Lower" abs with different exercises.
Which is it?

one muscle doesnt mean you can't hit different sections of it.
emphasis can on differnt sections; leg raises for lower etc.

although i'm positive that XXX666 will have some totally HARDCORE CAPITALIZED exercises involving IRON, your rectus abdominis (that's your 6pack) is one muscle, divided by tendons into the 6pack. what parts of your abs you see has more to do with where your body stores fat naturally, not whether you do incline/decline crunches.

you can isolate the upper and lower regions of the abdominals and you can work the entire abdominal with one movement. Hanging knee ups-curl ups will work the entire abdominal, and roman chair sit-ups *as long as you extend your torso back beyond parallel.

first of all everybody has abs, they are under some sort of tissue where is a 2mm of skin or 19pounds of fat those abs are there. but the kicker is your statement that "direct ab work has little effect on how your abs aesthetically look" which is total garbage. your basically stating that targeting the abs with exercise won't do anything and i'm saying your full of crap. how can you state that targetting a muscle with exercise won't develop that muscle. how can you even begin to rationalize that making a muscle do work against a resistence won't develop that muscle. essentially to a reader thats what you stated.
you need to read what you originally wrote before you try to defend yourself.
BTW, you have skinny guy abs, you have no seperation of muscle and tendons. If you want a real example of defined abs looks at XNick EdgeX. I guarantee he does direct ab work.
|
90% of abs are made in the kitchen. direct ab work does **** compared to diet and cardio. "first of all everybody has abs, they are under some sort of tissue where is a 2mm of skin or 19pounds of fat those abs are there." exactly, which is why people who run alot and low bf, and dont work out, still have abs. you are full of fail. you dont need to work abs excessively; doing crunches every other work out is fine but to say that you NEED to do direct ab work to have them is complete bull****
EDIT: and to even care that much about abs is wicked gay...they are relatively useless compared to other muscle groups.

To force hypertophy in them, they do need direct work. Look at the title of the site you are posting on.
In order to expose them, a clean diet and cardio will assist in lowering bf%.
For most people all 3 parts of the equation need to be incorporated.
1) Direct work
2) Clean diet
3) Moderate cardio
We are not talking about "boy band" abs here.

yeah thats great. you still mad that jblaisuri showed you up?
edit: and im talking about having VISIBLE abs, not strong abs or whatever you are referring to when you say "boyband abs". the OP asked how to get "really defined 6-pack abs" not how to get "strong" abs

^^ no..... he needs to do HEAVY COMPOUND LIFTS. these will increase his muscle mass. increasing his muscle mass while increase his metabolic rate, decreasing his bodyfat while adding muscle. crunches won't make a p!ss hole in the snow for him.

I have to DISAGREE with you, i think he needs to tie a rope 4' rope to a tree branch that is approximately 12' high, stand on a chair, tie the other end of the rope around his neck and kick the chair out from under himself.

No where in any of this have i seen genetics mentioned. Yes everybody can get decently defined abs, but you genetics will determine what its gonna take, there is no definite workout or diet that will give everybody great abs. You need to experiment and find out what works best for you. And to answer the other question, yes the 6 pack that we see is only one muscle, but there are several other muscles in that area that add to the look.

Diet is the BEST way to see your abs. I started a carb cycling diet 4 weeks ago and my abs look bigger and more defined than ever!

I have seen people say that the 6-pack is all one muscle and can be trained using 1 or 2 exercises.
Then I see people say that you need to work "upper" and "Lower" abs with different exercises.
Which is it?

Beat me to it, Iron. I was gonna make a comment about don't forget genetic plays a part in all of this.

I cant believe I read this whole thread...I think I want that rope/chair/tree combo your talking about because I dont want to be part of the human race if we can be as bullheaded, dumb and easily brainwashed (too dramatic?) as some of you. Cmon! READ and THINK about WHAT YOU READ! good god! I'll put it reeeeaaaal simple so the slow ones can follow....
1) everybody has abs...
2) low bodyfat will expose them but that doesnt mean they cant look better at the same BF%
3) yes, they get worked throughout the day but its not difficult and its not intense
4) you can directly hit the abs to induce hypertrophy (just like every other muscle group) which will help the appearance of seperation and make them look better when bf is low
5) abs dont grow easily or fast because of the work they normally get throughout the day but they do grow but WONT be disproportionate to the rest of you (this is where lifting does the most good)
6) they will get worked and even grow from lifting (squats and all that ****) but for the most part its the muscles deep inside that get worked so they wont be as pretty
7) genetics play a role, just like they do in everything (math, looks, muscles, etc) but were talking training so forget about it.
Get a low bf%. Do direct and indirect ab work. But dont listen to me, I obviously dont know anything about getting a good six pack. Listen to the guys with only a bit of definition inspite of low bodyfat that dont do direct ab work.
I can just see the red rep piling up as I hurt peoples feeling by being blunt. But if you READ this and THINK about it, everybody is right (at least partially) except the ones that say someone is completely wrong.

Im not gonna neg you or anything, but isnt that basically what i said? and if you look at my pics you cant argue against the progress ive made in my abs.
