Aspartame
By Pat Thomas

Aspartame has been linked to a host of devastating central nervous system disorders

When aspartame was approved for use, Dr HJ Roberts, director of the Palm Beach Institute for Medical Research, had no reason to doubt the FDA's decision. 'But my attitude changed,' he says, 'after repeatedly encountering serious reactions in my patients that seemed justifiably linked to aspartame.' Twenty years on, Roberts has coined the phrase 'aspartame disease' to describe the wide range of adverse effects he has seen among aspartame-guzzling patients.

He estimates: 'Hundreds of thousands of consumers, more likely millions, currently suffer major reactions to products containing aspartame. Today, every physician probably encounters aspartame disease in everyday practice, especially among patients with illnesses that are undiagnosed or difficult to treat.'

As a guide for other doctors, Roberts, a recognised expert in difficult diagnoses, has published a lengthy series of case studies, Aspartame Disease: an ignored epidemic (Sunshine Sentinel Press), in which he meticulously details his treatment of 1,200 aspartame-sensitive individuals, or 'reactors', encountered in his own practice. Following accepted medical procedure for detecting sensitivities to foods, Roberts had his patients remove aspartame from their diets. With nearly two thirds of reactors, symptoms began to improve within days of removing aspartame, and improvements were maintained as long as aspartame was kept out of their diet.

Roberts' case studies parallel much of what was revealed in the FDA's report on adverse reactions to aspartame--that toxicity often reveals itself through central nervous system disorders and compromised immunity. His casework shows that aspartame toxicity can mimic the symptoms of and/or worsen several diseases that fall into these broad categories (see Conditions Mimicked by Aspartame Toxicity).

Case studies, especially a large series like this, address some of the issues surrounding real-world use in a way that laboratory studies never can; and the conclusions that can be drawn from such observations aren't just startling, they are also potentially highly significant. In fact, Roberts believes that one of the major problems with aspartame research has been the continued over-emphasis on laboratory studies. This has meant that the input of concerned independent physicians and other interested persons, especially consumers, is 'reflexively discounted as "anecdotal"'.

Many of the diseases listed by Roberts fall into the category of medicine's 'mystery diseases'--conditions with no clear aetiology and few effective cures. And while no one is suggesting that aspartame is the single cause of such diseases, Roberts' research suggests that some people diagnosed with, for example, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's or chronic fatigue syndrome may end up on a regimen of potentially harmful drugs that could have been avoided if they simply stopped ingesting aspartame-laced products.

Conditions Mimicked by Aspartame Toxicity

? multiple sclerosis
? Parkinson's disease
? Alzheimer's disease
? fibromyalgia
? arthritis
? multiple chemical sensitivity
? chronic fatigue syndrome
? attention deficit disorder
? panic disorder
? depression and other psychological disorders
? lupus
? diabetes and diabetic complications
? birth defects
? lymphoma
? Lyme disease
? hypothyroidism

You can link anything to anything! Including what effect elephant trunk size at the Pittsburgh Zoo has to do with the grades you receive in college. That's called a correlation and it doesn't mean anything.

Show me some statistics regarding Aspartame correlations to other variables and exactly how that data was collected and analyzed, then you, me, and anyone else that cares can begin talking about this.

Medical research institutes get their money by having one of their docs do some half-assed study without any controls or solid formats and then publish

That way some company will give them research MONEY to do more studies..
A Medical research Institute is NOT a not-for-profit organization

ANd I work in nursing for an Agency in upstate NY and most of our hospitals and nursing homes USE aspartame products in many foods, drinks and even some medicines

Yes , you can have allergic reaction to aspartame just like you could have an allergic reaction to bee's or mushrooms or MSG ..doesnt mean its a bad product...just not for you

The information which you gave about weight lose is good for every beginner. Losing weight is simply a matter of expending more calories than you take in, through exercise and your daily activities. To win the battle, it helps to know how many calories you are consuming in a day. If you want to diet, and you know that it will make you feel better, then you need confidence. Otherwise, the temptation to cheat on your diet will make it harder, and you will not feel better when you do lose weight. If you tried every possible way to lose weight without much success, don't feel bad, you're not alone. Contrary to popular belief, weight loss does not happen overnight and there's no magic formula or pill that will make you lose weight. Learn how to lose weight through a sensible diet plan.

first off, mafiosoromano, i think your post is really great - quick and to the point for beginners.

readers, remember this was posted for BEGINNERS! despite all the negative comments that have been made about aspartame in this post, i do think allowing diet drinks when just starting a new diet plan is a good option. i mean, if you are a person that has been cutting back on your diet and losing for a while, yes, it's great to cut out the diet drinks and aspartame almost all together, but it can be a very difficult transition for someone who is new to all of this, who has been eating fast food and drinking soda everyday. these things take small steps and time. i, personally, have cut out the diet sodas for the most part but use aspartame on occaision - but i also changed my lifestyle many years ago and sometimes if i REALLY get the urge i will drink a coke zero, but it's very rare. at first, i admit, giving up Coke and Dr. Pepper was extremely difficult, as was fast food.

If you make to dramatic of changes to quickly, your not going to stick with it. And if you your going through life over weight you will have just as good of a chance of die from that as you would aspartame.
All in all, work your way toward a healthier life, and ultimately look to be off reg high sugars drinks as well as artificially sweetend drinks.
Good luck to all, and great post brotha, preciate the time and effort, forwarding this on to friends and family.

hey absolutely I've been looking to drop weight and since I've discovered my desire to join the Armed Forces, I've been hitting a nature trail at least 4X a week, I've biked and I've lost a solid 15 lbs since I started.

I only eat when I get a hunger pang, and I don't eat past a certain time 8 pm.

We've allowed ourselves so many luxury with a pizza in the oven to drive through burger joints that the calories are well into the 1000 range.

Anyone who wants to lose weight whether its 5 lbs or like me a 100, all it takes is simple steps to go through the day making the best healthy choices you can.

Aspartame is straight up bad for you. When it converts into formaldahyde it erodes serotonin receptors.

I am a pop fiend completely, In the past when I switched to diet panic attacks and depressive episodes increased in number. Recently, I have been having more diet as my gf likes it, and bang, more PAS and depressive episodes.

The way it became legal in foods is super sketch, shareholders in Monsanto are members of the FDA in the states. (it cannot be in food here in canada).

Everything else is super legit in your article, if you like pop, try Jones soda!, it's made with cane juice so it isn't as bad..,..... in moderation
