I know the feeling of anxiety when it comes to surgery. I remember when I had hydracele surgery(google it) done, I was flipping out that I wouldnt be able to have kids afterwards. IT is scary, but you hear about all teh bad thingsthat happen, when it is such a small percentage, you never hear about the millions of perfect surgeries and rehabs that happen, only the bad, you wil be cool bro, at least you wont have 32 total stitches in your sac like I did

I have had 2 major surgeries in sobriety. I was a narcotics addict, primarily opiates.
I had back surgery to repair a ruptured disk, the lead up to it was very painful, but I still managed to avoid pain meds. It was a trying time in my sobriety. The surgery was a relief by that point. The neurosurgeon prescribed some mild narcotics and urged me to take them.
I gave the bottle to my wife (like Fred Suggested) and told her I would tell her when I needed them. Honestly the relief from the ruptured disk was so great I didn't mind the post op pain. I didn't have to take any of them.
My second surgery was to repair a hiatal hernia, the lead up wasn't as bad, but the surgery was more trying. the had me on a demerol IV after the operation. It was on a timer or I could hit a button and it would release faster. I noticed by the end of my stay I was hitting the button a little too freely. They wrote me a scrip for pain meds when I left but I never filled it.
It was just a bit of pain. I discovered I could withstand a lot of pain when needed when I was waiting for my back surgery.

thanks for the great advise too. i have a hiatal hernia too but it doesnt require surgery yet. i just take a scrip for the acid reflux. the doc said i could lift heavy weights ar i would herniate it again so i just have it checked every four years. this year is the fourth year since i found out i had it. i think i got mine from all the induced puking i did over the years. thanks for the good advice and sharing you two experiences.

I have had two surgeries since i have been clean. Being a an opiate addict i was pretty nervous but even scarier was the fact that sometimes i would get excited about getting to take meds. I got all four of my empackeded wisdom teeth out and got by taking the pain meds the day of the surgery and day after. the second surgey i got my tonsils out. unfortunately this is a much more painful surgery as you get older. i was out of work for two weeks and on liquid roxycontin for 10 days. my sponsor and i dumped the last of it when the pain subsided. afterwards i went through withdrawls, was an emotional wreck, and wanted to use, but the temporary pain barely scratched the surface of the pain that accompanies active addiction. on the flip side, just because we are recovering doesn't mean that we have to be super heroes. take an honest look at your pain level. your body won't heal as well if it is in constant pain, just make sure you aren't manufacturing that pain in your head and you will be ok. keep sharing about it and make sure to remain honest with yourself!

I bought a combination lock box and had my wife set the combination and keep all narcotics locked up in there.

It's not that I don't trust myself... I just don't trust the disease...

Most interesting....surgeries. Other than the drugs to knock me out during the actual surgery...I did Tylenol after 2 cancer surgeries, 3 Meniscus scopes, one Hernia, half dozen extracted teeth, and broken cheek bone, Tibia, Fibia and Talus bones. (and follow up on the later 3 to extract the steel). The rough one was the night I lay in hospital waiting for the pinning of my 3 broken leg bones. 3 Tylenol at a time.

F'ing surgeries. I get the willies thinking about them.....

Well where to start?

My alcohol use history:

-First drank at 16. First time drinking got blackout drunk off half a fifth of gin
-Drank every other weekend or every weekend til 18
-18 became every weekend
-19 moved out and the drinking became 3-5 days a week
-21 at least 3 times per week

Binges:

I don't even know what you would consider a binge...

-Often would drink in the morning to cure hangover and then continue
-A binge while I was 19 lasted 2 weeks. Had to get rides to school from friends and would sometimes have a water bottle of vodka

-Hundreds of 2-5 day binges


Amount I would drink:

age 16-18- 10-15 beers/drinks

age 19-20- 15+ beers at least 3 nights a week usually 5. Sometimes an entire fifth per night

age 21 (quit hard a)- at least 18 beers friday/saturday and wednesday night. Sometimes 20-25



Arrests:

1. Mip at age 17
2. Mip (minor in possession) at age 20

3. Night of my 21st bday I drank well over a fifth and was blacked out for about 2 hours. I guess i tried to go into my "friends" house but it was the wrong one. Never entered, never took anything, just pulled on the door that was locked. Cops came, guns were drawn and i was in jail for 3 days for "attempted residential burglary"... Load of horse**** but i got it all dropped.

After i got out i went and got drunk at the rodeo

Day charges were dropped i drank a pint of SOCO 100 proof and some vodka and broke some stuff in my house falling down.

4. DUI at age 21. I have no excuse. Driving drunk is the one thing that I never did but I guess I blacked out and did that night. I got pulled over a couple hundred yards away from my house. Blew a .251 and was taken to jail. Parents had to get me.


That night/next day I realized how out of hand my life had become.
Weight gain
change in attitude
deteriorating health
Hurting the people i loved
spending 70 bux a week on booze
Missing school because i couldn't get out of bed
Very high risk lifestyle



I went to my attorney and told him I wanted help with the case but I had no problem going to rehab or whatever for my own benefit.

Withdrawls:
-Luckily i wasnt physically addicted enough for much
-Slight shakes
-Anxiety was very very bad and i had my first panic attack


Current status:

I am attending intensive out patient groups for 2 hours a day
My Dui is in defferal so I have probation for 5 years along with tons of classes
Going to AA at least 2 times a week
Havent touched a drink in 86 DAYS!
Health is improving
Losing weight


U guys can add encouragement if u have gone through this or ask questions. I have had extremely wild things happen to me through the years. All has hopefully shaped me into a better person.

welcome to the group! glad to have you here. your age doesnt matter here. what matters is that we all share the bond of being alcohalic/addict and are trying to better our lives and give support to eachother and the new commers. right now YOU are the most important person.
your story sounds very similar to how i got started. almost exactly. i think youll be impressed with this thread and all the people are great. we actually tackle some serious issues. glad to have you so i hope you stick around.

Hellol old-timer .

Right now 10-15 hours of my week are taken up with alchol classes/AA along with school studies. The only excersise I get is a lot of basketball. I've only lost about 10 lbs since I quit drinking but I think that is because my eating isnt in check really. I plan on losing like 30 lbs this summer.

I will start hitting the gym harder and working and have 7,000 less empty calories per week (from beer).

Feels good just knowing that now i have the chance to get in shape. Before I had 0 chance and gained about 40 lbs in 2 years from beer alone. I was usually to drunk/hung over to work out at all.

My 2 cents,

We all have a ton of stories, spend your time finding the solution, not sharing stories. You don't have any advice yet, except for what not to do. Mouth shut-ears open.

Glad you posted and congrats in a couple days for 90!

Remember, you're just another bozo on the bus along with the rest of us, you're not special because you've figured out what you are....you're lucky to have figured it out so young.

Getting the upperhand on alchoholism will afford you a set of tools that will help you live a life you've never imagined for yourself, for now, it's just one day at a time, don't drink today and today only. We'll address tomorrow when it comes.
