too many reps?
hey guys
the trainer at my gym is having me bench the bar (no weights) for 60-80 reps in 3 sets. i personally think this is a terrible idea but he is insisting that it is good for getting stronger and building muscle. i want to know if he is having me do something good or bad and suggestions on how many reps i should be doing. oh yeah and my goal is to build muscle and get stronger.
thanks

You'll see better results by pushing more weight in the lower rep range, 6-10.
Eat a good amount of food and train hard and you'll grow.

Sounds mentally retarded, switch gyms immediately, people have different opinions on rep schemes i personally never go much higher than 6-8 and prefer to do multiple sets of low reps, 1-5, this way you can lift at a high intensity whilst making easier strength gains thus facilitating easier muscular gains provided the diet and volume is there.

Personally i would never do 60-80 reps. That's a crap load and i cant say that I've ever herd of anyone saying that's a good idea. I usually just stick to the ol' 8-10 rule. But then again I could be wrong and that's just me. But 60-80 reps... man good luck the next day!

It's okay to do once in a while IMO, but I wouldn't do it all the time. Are you eventually adding weight to the bar, or you're just doing 3 sets totaling 60 to 80 reps?

while it wont get you a lot of development muscle wise, your only 14 so maybe by getting you to do a lot of reps with no weight he is trying to get you to practice form first before moving onto a regular rep range?

Sorry to butt into the conversation:
If I use heavy enough weights would it be okay for me to lift just 2 reps of 8 or 10. I am just beginning a starter all-over body program every other day - 3x a week.

What do you mean 2 reps of 8 or 10? Do you mean 2 sets of 8-10 reps? If so that's not training heavy at all.

The only thing this will do is help with your form and help your base move. Beyond that it is the same as walking everyday, it doesnt hurt but its not going to pack on the muscle. High weight, low reps, rest and good nutrition is what is needed.

If you are only doing 2 sets then you are most likely not doing enough. It depends on what your goal is as to what amount of reps and sets you need to do.

Personally i barely ever go past 5 reps as i believe in lifting heavy weight, 2 sets of 8-10 is not heavy but each to their own really.

Challenges the muscle in different ways, different types of hypertrophy.
And OP, this is why I'd like to be a strength coach. To keep retards like this out of the job.

This. At the end of a workout it's fine, but for your primary workout, any rep range higher than 15 isn't doing anything in terms of muscle building if you ask me.
