I can run a recomp for 4 to 6 weeks on a low carb diet. So it's certainly doable. What tends to happen though is the weight loss hit's a plateau, so you have to get after it to get it started again and then the gains come to a stop.
Without "chemical enhancement" I don't think recomps are worth the effort. You really have to have your diet dialed in as well as your exercise routine. You gain less than you would on a bulk and you lose less than you would on a cut.
Recomping is a slow effort and easy to not make progress at. I guess if a person wanted to cruise through summer it would be ok. Personally I would rather cut or bulk.
The best way to spare muscle is maintain high protein intake. Your body will burn fat and protein for energy, so keeping protein levels high enough that what it burns does not come from your muscle is the key. I have the best luck at 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. I also take 10 grams of BCAA's in between breakfast and lunch (5g Leucine, 2.5g Isoleucine, 2.5g Valine) and lunch and dinner. I also use Purple Wrath (7gs BCAA's and some other goodies) pre-workout for morning fasted cardio.
As you slowly drop your calories, a certain amount of muscle loss is inevitable for some people. It shouldn't exceed 20% of your total fat loss though.

Not with Atkins. You'd need a more complex diet like UD2.0.

The only way you can lose fat and gain muscles at the same time is to immediately ditch the Atkins diet. Its one of the most unhealthiest diets you can submit your body to.
Simple equation for losing fat and gaining muscle...
1. Eat healthy natural whole foods such as lean cuts of meat, healthy carbs, proteins and fats.
2. exercise daily
You will lose weight on Atkins...but you will most likely gain it back ten fold.
Not giving your body carbohydrates...aka...fuel for your body...your actually in my opinion becoming less healthy. Our bodies are like machines...they process what you put in them and take what they can use for fuel.....your not putting any fuel into your machine bro!
Ditch Mr. Atkins .....you cant find health in an unhealthy fad diet. Good luck!...you can do it the healthy way!...here to help anytime!

So are you saying Keto diets are unhealthy?
You do realize the human body does not "need" carbohydrates. Many societies all around the world still live without or with very little and are in better health than we are.
I like carbs as much as the next guy, but I don't believe doing without them is unhealthy. The human body is an amazing thing that compensates for their lack.

But, if the body dosen't get enough carbs, dosen't it automatically take proteins from muscle and turn them into carbs? Therefore not taking protein and building muscle, but just converting it to carbs for energy?

No, it doesn't turn them into carbs. It turns them into an energy source. But protein isn't the only energy source when you have no carbohydrates. There is also fat.
When fatty acids are broken down, they are turned into Ketones, of which there are three types. The body then uses them for energy.
I am a little rusty here and don't feel like looking it up, but if I recall, the process is called gluconeogenisis. Which is where the body takes non-carb substrates and converts them to glucose for energy.
The carb conversion works a little differently.
That is why keto is so muscle sparing and effective as a weight loss program. It makes the body use fat as it's primary energy source instead of carbs. And if you are eating high protein, then it doesn't take protein from your muscles.
