my legs look just like that, i rep 405x8 on the smith
never tried regular squats...they dont have them at my gym..

when i was 16, my sophomore year (srs), at the southern indiana bench and squat championship, i squatted 465 parallel in the 215 class. i weighed about 195. the next lower class is 189, like in wrestiling. the compitition was mandatory for everyone on the football team. I couldnt touch that now.
props to the op, I think breaking 400 lbs on the squat (with free weights, no smith machine) is something to be proud of.

Hes not talking about the weight difference, hes reffering to difference, between doing a controlled squat with a fixed bar, as opposed to balancing 4 plates a side on your back to do a squats past parallel, with no bar support, when you requir more strength.
Smith machine squats in effect should be easier because the hard work is taken out, you just have to concentrate on using your legs to pus the weight up.
Free weight squats are harder because you have to worry about using all your stabilizers to keep from falling over, and you cant concentrate 100% on pushing the weight with your legs because there is other factors to worry about
