Are there any benefits combining weights and boxing?
I recently read that Boxing is a good endurance and fat burning type of workout and was wondering if there is any benefit combining my weights workout with a boxing routine.
Working out a schedule is one thing (boxing 3 nights a week? change my weights split?) but if boxing is going to impact my weights in a negative way then what is the best approach?
Perhaps it's something you stagger with your weights workout? For example weight training for 4 weeks then 2 weeks of boxing?

Boxing is excellent cardio. Like any cardio exercise however, if you're trying to pack on pounds you're going to need to increase your diet to supplement those extra calories you're burning. Idk what your current workout routine is like but you can do BOTH boxing and lifting and in fact it's recommended.

Well I currently work to a 5 day split (into my third year of training now):
Monday: Chest & Calves
Tuesday: Back
Wednesday: Biceps & Triceps
Thursday: Legs (inc calves)
Friday: Shoulders
Workout is in the morning about 7:00am for about an hour.
Typically I following with 2 ab workouts at least 4 days a week. Weekends are no exercise days.
I'd probably want to put boxing the evening workout sessions and maybe move to a 4 day split.

That sounds good. Seems you have the experience so I don't doubt you can handle the intensity. Might want to try cutting back a bit on the ab workouts. Three, maybe four, times a week at the most to avoid overtraining them but you know your body better so if it's working for you - don't change it.
EDIT: if you're looking to knock a day off you could altogether get rid of the bi/tri day. Mix up the biceps with your back and the triceps with your chest/calves day.

Thanks Gmorris88,
Actually I'm not actually looking to knock a day off yet. I originally trained triceps with Chest and biceps with back in the same session but found I wanted to concentrate more on the chest and back rather than the arms.
Thing is for a while I was a bit lazy with the abs but think I've nailed down the right routine for myself with the benefits slowly starting to show. But I wouldn't mind trying the boxing to expediate it a bit.
I recently changed gyms and they have some pretty good boxing facilities aside form a ring but it's there, might as well use it.
I'll get one of the trainers to get me started on boxing and see how it affects my split and adjust if need be.

No problem. Sounds like you got things under control. Rather than knocking a day off maybe you could try what I suggested in the post above me (working the two arm muscle groups on back/chest days) and throw in an extra chest or back day. You'd have to rearrange your days... Something like this maybe:
Monday: Chest/Tri's/Calves
Tues.: Back/Bi's
Wednesday: Legs
Thursday: Chest or Back (lighter volume than the other primary days)
Friday: Shoulders
Only problem with that scheme would be you run the risk of tiring yourself for the shoulder day but if you have the energy you could pull it off.

Well talking splits, I'm currently on my week off weights and have a fitness assessment next week.
Of course it's time to change the schedule a bit so this was going to be the approach.
Because working out the calves twice a week seemed to finally add a bit of size and striation I've decided to give the following a try:
Monday: Chest and Back (Concentrate on Chest, supp with back)
Tuesday:Legs (inc calves)
Wednesday:Arms
Thursday: Back and Chest (Concentrate on Back, supp with chest)
Friday:Shoulders & calves
The option of boxing is only a recent thing - there was an article on a health show about which is better for the pecs Boxing or Weights and I say both are!
So throw in Boxing maybe 3 night s week (Mon, Wed and Fri) and abs on the other days I would probably be able to up my calorie intake as well.
For some reason even with my current workout my calorie intake although kind of low is still not burning away adequately.
In the last 9 weeks I've pretty much increased my size by 1 cm (arms, chest, shoulders, legs and calves) which is a change because I was in bit of a rut for a couple of months there.

Any progress is good progress. I'm always wary of working out two big groups such as the chest and back together just because there are many different muscles that support those two groups. Try it out though and if it works for you than keep at it but I'd probably split the two up. Also, let me know how boxing works out for you. I did pankration in the past and it was a killer workout. I'm thinking of adding boxing or some form of MMA to my current routine but I need to work on my endurance a bit first.

Yeah look I agree and I have a feeling this is basically work in progress for the first 3-4 weeks cause this is now starting to look exhausting - may have to off put the creatine and get back to the caffeine!
I'll keep you updated!
