Fat Loss to Waist Loss Ratio-Numbers
Hey everyone,
I tried to do a search on the forums to find the answer, but I wasn't successful. Like everyone else I'm working on losing bodyfat (fat loss) and slimming down my waist size. I know the two go hand in hand. You lose fat, your waist is bound to get slimmer. What I'm trying to figure out, what is the formula or numbers for figuring how many inches is lost with fat loss per week so that I can setup my goals accordingly.
I track my calories and exercise/daily activities to ensure a calorie deficit. Based on those numbers I average between 1-2 lbs lost a week. So here's what I'm trying to figure out. I currently have a waist measurement of 32 1/2 inches. My goal is to get to 30 inches. How would I calculate the actual or approx. time it would take to reach that goal? I know I could base it off my weekly measurements, but they aren't always consistent. One week I've lost an inch, then 3 weeks later another inch (Prob depends on my results of the week too, some weeks I tend to have a cheat meal or two) Following me so far? If anyone has a formula they use or knows how to calculate this it would be great! I'm trying to lose those 2 more inches in two weeks...Is is possible or an unrealistic time frame?
Thanks alot! && Take Care!

I do not think you will find a formula...it depends on so many factors...
of the 1-2 lbs you lose per week, how much is fat and how much is muscle?? you can not know...if the 1-2 lbs you lose weekly would be only fat, then you might work out a formula as to your waist size....but it's not only fat what you lose, unfortunately.

That's a really good question, that I don't think you are going to find a very good answer to.
I imagine for someone to have studied this, they'd have to do some rigorous testing throughout the entire weight loss period (maybe scans of muscle, bone density tests, etc..) Plus, there are so many factors that could really skew the results.
For my own personal situation - The most fat and I've been was 198 and I calculated myself being 27% bf. In 3 months I went from 27% bf @ 198 to 165 and hovering at 12-14% bf. But, my waist size (in pants) never changed because my legs held very little fat and anything less than a 34 was skin tight around my thighs. I imagine I would have to get in the sub 10% bf range before a pant size drop was due.

PI divided by the circumference of the size of your butt in inches divided by 30.
I can lose 10 pounds and nothing off my waist. Then lose another 5 and drop an inch. It just all depends. A waist of 30 inches is pretty freaking tiny.

There is no formula as people have said.
All you can do is gather statistical data from other people and try to approximate one for yourself.
For me - so far I've been losing about 7 lbs per month for a 1-1.2 inch off my waist. I went from 200lbs/39'' to 180lbs/35.5'' in 3 months. I'm sure 39-36 is way easier than 33-30 tho (obviously, as there is a limit to how much your waist can shrink ;-) ). That being said, I still hope to reach 31'' before August.

04/05/2009 -- 178 lbs, ~17% bf <-- (could've eaten cleaner :-( )
05/05/2009 -- 173 lbs, ~15% bf <-- (almost 15.5 tho :()

this may help you:
you'll notice that, if you are well overweight, that your waist size might shrink linearly. Then, once you reach the high teens in BF% it seems to slow down but weight loss continues. The last place the body stores fat on male is around the waist, as it is efficient to store it there. I noticed a huge drop in waist size in the 10-14% range. Anyone else vouch for this?

I lost an inch off the waist with roughly every 6-7lb weight loss but I am not lean yet
