I'm looking for a used car (05 or newer) for my fiance and we're really looking for something that will last and get great gas mileage for trips and around town. I've narrowed it down to a prius or a diesel Volkswagen. Just wanted to know what everyone's thoughts are.

I have no experience with prius but i have a 2004 jetta tdi i bought in 2007 and i love it more than any car i have ever bought
check out the forums at tdiclub.com
im biased towards VW but i worked for a toyota dealership. Prius's arent bad, but servicing the hybrid portion of the engine is EXPENSIVE...and especially a tranny for them. We had an 06 come in with 100,000 highway miles (travel car) that needed a tranny, repair ticket was 6gs. no warranty cuz it was over milage. Now vw's arent cheap to repair either, the only difficulty in servicing them is the weird tool sizes they require, along with other minor things. Dub love though, gotta stick with vdub
If you're gay and like wasting money, get the Prius.
Otherwise, get the Jetta.
Of course, the VW will cost a ton to maintain and repair too (I had a Jetta), but you won't be overpaying by $10,000 for a hatchback only to be disappointed by the MPGs and get robbed when it's time to replace the batteries. It's been proven mathematically that hybrids (especially the Prius) will have to be owned and driven about 25 years to even begin seeing any savings.
A $22,000 hatchback! A non-Hybrid car of comparable size would cost you well under $15K. A Chevy Aveo is about $11-12,000 new and gets very good MPG. You're starting way in the hole financially with a Prius and then the batteries will cost you $3-4000 to replace a couple of times in the car's lifetime if you keep it long enough to try to make back the money lost in the excessive purchase price.
Plus, it's one of the ugliest cars ever made and is really nothing more than a status symbol for tree-huggers and Hollywood idiots.

Lol.
they were making fun of prius's on Top Gear.
James was test driving honda's new hydrogen cell car, the clarity, and he made comments how prius owners will be driving a 2nd rate car when the clarity comes out.

lol they also showed a bmw m3 (i think m3) chasing a prius at top speed, and the bmw got better gas mileage haha

It's for my fiance so i won't be driving it....well I will be if we are together. But I'm with you guys and the tdi. I don't mind the looks of the prius but I don't like the idea of having to replace a $3k battery. We'll be buying used so we'd most likely have to replace it sometime down the road.
How is the maint. with the tdi's? I've never owned a diesel.

If you go VW make sure you get a warranty....**** can get expensive quick with those.
I can imagine. We're not buying new so the warranty won't be much of an option. Anything will be better than the car she has now (seabring). That thing has more issues. It's an 04 and we're having a hard time getting 4 grand for it.

WTF? Those cars with air conditioning, power everything, automatic trans etc etc like the Prius has will cost at least 15K and the Prius gives you way more luxury features plus options like navigation, backup camera etc etc. It is also not a sub-compact but classified as a midsize vehicle due to its space.
Apples to apples... and you are a fruit.

Its a 10 year 100 or 150K mile waranty on battery packs and in testing and in practice they last longer. Battery pack storage capacity does not correlate with fuel economy decreases.
VW's dont break down monthly? maybe yours did but i have an 02 gti and in 3 years all ive replaced was an 02 sensor and a seatbelt latch.
saying 1 car has a lot of problems doesnt mean all of them do.
toyotas have problems too. tc's have roofs that rattle, catalytic converters go out faster on toyotas because they put them closer to the exhaust manifold, among other things.
VW is pretty reliable, i don't know wtf are people talking about..
