Nice and big, four or five of everything and spaced out well. DB's only go to 120 and no T-Bar though. When I went it wasn't crowded at all. They also, not that I care, had a lot of cardio equipment. Not sure on price, I used it for free due to the hotel I stayed at having free use.
|
Sounds good - the lack of >120 lb DBs isn't going to affect me :-) Is it still there? I am going to be staying at the Sawgrass Marriott.

I agree... shining shoes seems like it would be kinda degrading... for the person whom is doing it, like I'm putting them down. I dunno...

The Golds Gym on Commercial Blvd in Ft Lauderdale has turned sharply downhill the last couple of years. I trained there the last two weeks while on vacation down there using a guest pass.
There is broken equipment that was broke a year ago when I was there and still has not been fixed.
The 45 degree leg presses are archaic and actually dangerous. The catch notches are barely long enough to hold the latches. After I finished a set of sumo leg presses last week, I took my feet off the plate and was preparing to get off the machine when the latch slipped off the notch and the sled with 300 plus pounds of weight came crashing down towards me. If my legs had still been on the sled, I could have been seriously injured.
Last Sunday, there was one person ( anyone heard of a back up??) who was supposed to be opening the gym. He showed up without a key. He said he did not have a key and after calling several numbers to try to find someone who had one and could open the place, he had to give up. Therefore, the gym which was supposed to open a 7 AM and had several people like me there and ready to train, did not open. I drove by an hour later on the way to a Ballys down the road and it was still closed and dark. What kind of a way is that to run a business?

Gold's Gym in Teterboro, NJ.
A true weightlifter's/bodybuilder's gym. It has a LOT of cardio machines, a spinning room, and a movie cardio room (dark room with a large screen to watch movies while you do cardio). It has a boxing ring, lots of cable machines, and most importantly, a very large array of free weights. There were 4 Hammer Strength type squat racks, benches (flat, incline, and decline), as well as a sizable EZ and straight barbell curl stations. Dumbbells too, and a few seated military press stations.
The one downside was that they do not provide towel service - but I enjoyed doing my 5x5 at this gym. The bench press was right in front of the squat station, so I moved quickly from one exercise to another, and the barbell rows were easily done afterwards.
I would join if I wasn't already a member of another gym.

If you're staying downtown on the beach, Holmes Gym is decent, good cardio and machines, freeweights OK. It's expensive, about $70+ a week, but that is better than a day pass ($25+?? I think). The Dan Hotel advertises a "vast array" of workout equipment, but they are describing one rusty old chromed short bar with one collar and a few small plates and very basic old cardio machines in a nasty, dank enclosure.

I used to have a metro membership for the YMCA here in the St. Louis area. While they are convenient (they're all over the place), and generally have a friendly staff, their equipment leaves a bit to be desired.
I recently joined Golds Gym in O'Fallon MO (suburb of St. Louis), and it is excellent. Cardio theater, spinning room, all the weights and racks one could ever want, very well organized, clean, friendly staff...it's a great place and I love going there for my workouts. There's another Golds within a ten mile radius that is exactly the same. I highly recommend either place. The only thing I miss from the Y is the towel service and a steam room and/or sauna.

Major shout out to Gold's Tulsa. They have a brand new place just loaded with the toys we like. They were also terribly nice to old Baldie last Friday while in town for business.

One incredibly palatial Gold's Gym here. If you're passing through Boise, this one is definitely worth a stop, side trip and work out. Worked out there last Spring on the way from NC to Oregon.
Incredible amount of equipment available.

Gyms to Consider:
Bally's in Vancouver, Washington (yes, Washington state, NOT BC, as in Canada); two full size swimming pools; rock climbing; lots of aerobic equipment, machines as well as free weights.

Okay, if you live in the Boise area, and you are looking for a quality personal training studio, this is the one.
It is not a huge gym, but the equipment they have is very high quality, and they have everything you would need, unless you are a power lifter or competitive bb'r. (In which case you wouldn't need a personal training studio, would you?)
The trainers seemed very professional, they kept the trainees moving and had a well though out plan.
Karin, and her sister Alissa, who own the studio, are just wonderful ladies.
Plus, there is not "the pretty sister". It's like, there's the "tan pretty sister" and the "not tan pretty sister". Just lovely ladies to boot, personalities as well as looks.
Don't have sloppy form, or Karin's 9yr old daughter Chloe will have to correct you, if she's around.
I have no idea of the rates, but if I was in need, this would be the place I would be.

I only recently joined BB.com. I travel all the time for work and this thread is incredibly useful.
I was recently in Orlando, Florida. There is a gym there called the Steel Mill Gym. Its 24 hours and an old school, hardcore lifting atmoshpere. Everyone working out there was a serious lifter. But everyone also seemed very cool. There were women working out there as well. Check it out if you are in Orlando.

I just joined the Golds Gym in Delran, NJ, about a mile from my house.
Gold's Gym #0129
1060 Chester Avenue
Delran, NJ 08075
I'd post the link but I can't yet..
It's the first commercial gym I've ever joined, but it seems to me to have all the goods you'd ever want: tons of machines and cables (only one is broken/awaiting repair) with many duplicates, tons of benches and freeweights, 2 tanning booths (one is out of order though), a separate room for classes, a second level just for aerobics (treadmills, bikes, ellipticals, etc..) a juice bar, a sauna, lockers, showers, etc..
But they're also expanding. They got the lease for next door, they're tearing down the wall and putting in a basketball court (not that I care about that) and expanding the freeweight section. The place will be even huger than it is now.
Here's their list:
* Basketball Court
* Cardio Theater
* Dedicated Cycling Studio
* Group Exercise Classes
* Juice bar
* New Cardio Equipment
* New Resistance Machines
* Personal Training
* Sauna/Steam Room
* Senior Programs-SilverSneakers
* Tanning
* Updated and larger Free Weight section
* Updated Kids Club
* Updated Locker Rooms
(It's incredibly so much better than lifting at home with just a bench and 250lbs worth of weights. I love being able to go from exercise to exercise easily w/o all the hassle.)
The staff is also very friendly and helpful, I really like the atmosphere there. It strikes the perfect balance: it's serious, but not stoic - friendly yet fervent.

In Canberra (AUS):
Body Blitz fitness.
Good all-round gym for the hard-core bodybuilders. Not too crowded either.
ANU sports and recreation centre.
Big gym. Some equipment has seen better days but a good variety of equipment none-the-less. It has a separate room for weight lifters. It gets crowded about 5-7pm.
I would have posted the URL links to these, but my post count is too low and wasn't granted permission to do so. PM me if you want the links.

Hands down, I have never ever run into a gym anywhere near as awesome as this one...
If you live in Pontiac, Auburn Hills or surrounding areas in Michigan check out the great lakes athletic club. I was a member and as bad as Michigan sucks this place was a diamond in the rough! Has day care, programs for kids of all ages, and is just overall awesome. Never so busy you can't find a place to work out. Just google great lakes athletic club.
Also, right now I am a member of the 'y' because it is the only gym in the area it isn't the best but the place has daycare and programs for kids. The nice thing is that I can use 'y' facilities in other areas. When I was recently in Grand Rapids, MI I went to the main facility downtown off of Pearl Street. 3 floors and plenty of equipment. Facility was built in 2005 and it is downright awesome. If you are in GR or visiting and need a gym, I suggest you go there. You don't have to be a member of a 'Y' you can pay ten bucks and get a guest pass.

I was recently in Gold's Gym in Hollywood Florida as I was there on business and worked out 3 mornings there. It was a fairly small gym but had all the equipment and free weights I needed to get a good workout each morning.
I also have been in "Dr Phillips Gold's Gym" in Orlando and if you're ever in the area you should stop by. It's the biggest gym I've ever been in and it has everything from pretty coeds sweating on the aerobic machines to hard core bodybuilders ripping tissue.
I particularly liked the free weight room in the back with the smaller room for T-Bar lifts. There were 3 guys in there doing CRAZEE things that you only see in the movies. I was so entranced I watched them for an hour and was PUMPED for a month to jump up ALL my weight on my freeweight lifts.
