It's freezing here but i'm gonna go for a 1hr walk this am before my breakfast! I'm glad i found out about slow cardio as i always dreaded going to run sprints up this 75 yd hill every am. Especially when it was freezing outside! Brutal!

Puppy is being lown in on Sat....still considering names

But on a more serious note I have a question for you: I've noticed that I haven't been sleeping well lately and some of my lifts are going down weight and rep wise, do you think it could be overtraining?
I thought it might be, so I decided to take a weeks rest. Is this a wise choice?
My training split is a pretty average one, but maybe I need more off days?
Monday - Chest
Tuesday - Back
Wednesday - Legs
Thursday - Shoulders
Friday - Arms
Sat/Sun - off
Also, I usually only do 3 exercises with 3 working sets each exercise for each body part. Is this too little? I've always heard to listen to your body, and I feel this is enough, but maybe it's all in my head.
Any Advice you could give would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
|
Thanks for the props on the movie...I still haven't seen it myself!
As for the overtraining....probably not, but your sleep (or lack thereof) is most likely the cause of your lifts going down, etc..
Solve the problem of why you're not sleeping well, and you'll unlock the mystery....sleep is essential to recovery and good lifts, good strength....along with proper food intake

Keto diet for cutting
Hey Bob, hope you are doing great.
I would like to know what is your opinion on the cyclic ketogenic diet for cutting down, while holding on as much muscle as I can. I read about this diet over here - http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/cycl...genic_diet.htm
For cutting I am primarily focusing on slow cardio for 40-45 minutes 3 days a week (will eventually increase to 5 days a week), and a 2 day lifting split with about 10-15 reps on most days, with about a 500 cal deficit in diet.
But once in a while is it okay to bump up the calories a bit to maintenance level for a couple of days, and do heavy weights with 4-6 reps for a couple of workouts? I am cutting for the first time and am kind of apprehensive that if I dont lift heavy once in a while, I would lose too much muscle/strength.

Bob, I saw you at the Arnold but wasn't able to say hi in person. I just finished the 3 discs of World Class Physique, I'm sure I'll need to go thru them again to get all the points. They're worth every penny.

Know that GI warning they give on the bars b/c of the sugar alcohols? Yea, that's for me. I get extreme GI distress/cramping from eating protein bars with a lot of sugar alcohols in them.

Look in the ingredients and see what TYPE of protein is in it. It's not always from the best sources. I would always opt for drinking a shake or eating a meal instead of a bar. Actually, I'm also allergic to peanuts and most of those bars have peanuts so I just avoid them all together.

Bob
Bob-
Assuming I am around 12 percent body fat weighing 153 lbs. given that i am an ectomorph, and assuming my diet, training, and slow cardio are on point, how long approximately would you estimate it will take me to get down to 6% without losing much muscle mass. I completely understand that this varies on a person-to-person basis, but I wanted to get some sort of rough estimate. the only supplement i am taking other than protein powders is l-carnitine. thank you.
ps- i only take 500mg of l-carnitine before my morning cardio and 1500 before workouts. is this the proper dosage or do i need to do something else for maximum fat utilization of the product.

Hey Bob! Question for you about abs......I am trying to get my flat firm abs back after having my kids and I want to know the best exercises to accomplish that. Ab machines at the gym? Heavy weight? Lower weight? Reps? Regular old crunches? Have I completely screwed up my stomach? Is there still hope??? lol
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Fair enough, but I bet its still better than a snickers bar, or any other chocolate bar, protein is still the building blocks of muscle no matter which one it is, but whey being the best. Having said all this I still don't rate protein bars, I don't even rate protein drinks as I think they have a poor absorbsion rate, apart from the critical one after a workout, I think they are mediocre.

muscle dysmorphia
Hey Bob, just wondering your thoughts on muscle dysmorphia.
Just wondering if you or someone you know has ever been affected by this. I have been lifting for 3 years now and have made some pretty solid gains. However, I never feel that it's close to good enough. Not sure if it's just my inner drive of never being satisfied and that keeps pushing me to do more or if it's something more.
Not looking for a medical explanation here, mostly just your thoughts on how you deal or dealt with the mental side of the sport. How did you manage your own expectations?
Thx Bob

Hey Bob I started using your slow cardio in the past, but only on a treadmill, I wanted to switch it up to do some time on a bike, stair climber, etc...
I was just wondering how do you actually judge if it is slow enough..do you go by say RPMs for the bike, heart rate??
Thanks a lot.
