Used to do them really easily when I was lighter. Started my bulk and now I do them weighted most of the time. I can do about 6-7 pull ups with 20 lbs on me i think.
oh and pull ups+chin ups are easily my favorite exercise ever, if i could only do one exercise for the rest of my life these would be it. dips are great too though.
Being big is not an excuse to not do be able to do pullups. I know a 400lber that can do 8-10. Granted he's a top level benching powerlifter, stll though...
Lulz.
Seriously though, so this 400lb guy can do 8-10. What if he wanted to do sets of 10? 12? 15? That's where the lat pulldown comes in, at least until he drops some flab.
I've said this many times before: there's a good reason why male gymnasts are short and top heavy. And there's a good reason why a bodyweight exercise like pullups will always be geared in the favor of that kind of physique. A taller, endomorphic lifter is carrying a lot more weight by default, and none of that muscle is assisting in the lift.
Of course that's not an excuse for taller, heavier guys with big legs to avoid doing them, but it does explain why bigger IFBB pros who get up near 300lbs in the off-season prefer the lat pulldown instead. It has nothing to do with being "weak."
Yeah, but its proportional. What muscles are we using in the pullups? Biceps and lats primarily, no? I don't know the EXACT number but for most people, those muscles might make up about say 15% of a person's body weight (just guessing really, whatever the number is doesn't have too much significance).
Anyway, why wouldn't a taller guy with my proportions exactly not be able to do as many as me? Sure, we have the same proportions, he's taller, therefore his legs, chest, triceps (or "non assisting muscle") have nothing to do with the lift but he's also got more muscle that does assist.
Its got nothing to do with weight. Its got to do with proportions. But if you're leg heavy without the same mass in your upper body, you're gonna be able to crank out more bodyweight squats. Unfortunately for people like this, nobody gives a **** about how many bodyweight squats someone can do.

Since you're into percentages, how much would you say the glutes, quads, hams, calves, and all that bone mass (and body fat) around the lower torso, hips, and legs typically account for? None of it assists in the lift. So irrespective of height and upper body size, obviously a lifter who has skinny legs, no ass, and a tiny waist has a distinct advantage on pullups.
I'm bigger and heavier than a lot of guys in the gym, carry plenty of weight in the lower body, and have certainly never made any excuses -- I'm solid on chinups/pullups and even stronger on dips. Now I've seen guys who are similar in upper body size weighing 225-230, with small waists and matchstick legs. That's essentially a one plate advantage they get automatically courtesy of genetics and avoiding leg training.
took me two years before i could do a wide grip pull up, but I can do around 13x now. When I do wide grip, seems to be a lot wider than most, maybe cause i'm taller than most.

At 200lbs I do 10 with 55lbs attached. It took 3 years to build up to this and I've been lifting 6+.. I stopped at current weight as I have no desire to go any heavier with my goals... I don't know how many I can do without weights because by the time I get to doing body weight pullups i'm already worn out. Then again, pullups are where I'm a pro...
That's pretty impressive, props. I almost never see anyone in the gym doing a full pull up, usually they go half or three quarters of the way down.
I used to struggle with pullups because of my upper body strength in relation to my height, weight, (6'6" 260) and the amount of mass i carried on my lower half. It took some time but now I'm able to perform around 12 dead hang pullups. Which is an accomplishment for me compared to my almost invisible numbers less than a year ago.

I was pleased with myself today. I've been stuck at the same number of pullups for quite a while now, and then like magic today I was able to do one more. I haven't been doing any special lately, just hung in there long enough until it finally broke through.
today i did 6 sets of 20...the first 3 were bodyweight...the next 2 were with 45lbs strapped up..then the last set was bodyweight...my entire upper everything is still in muscle shock...i love it though, pull ups are my favorite
i don't believe this. obvious e-stats. vids or negs...

Don't use the assist machine, just keep trying regular pullups and you WILL get better! I can do about 8 pullups, then maybe 2 more struggling. 5'8" 180lb.
Dont listen to this, use the assist machine to grow slowly. You wouldn ttell someone to start benching there 2 rep max and stick with that weight just starting out would you? No. From a bodybuilding standpoint if your only getting 2 reps with something move the weight down and build up to it.
I used to warm up with pull-ups. 3 sets of about 8-10, about 14 max. Which wasn't bad considering my condition. But I stopped doing those, wish I hadn't. Now I can barely do 8 with form.
I think pull-ups are more of a fitness thing too. Honestly I believe my lats/back are way stronger then they were, but because I do weigh a little bit more and dont do the pull-ups, I still cant do as many.

Yeah but see, you're trying to make a point I already made. I understand that legs make up a high percentage of body mass. Thats why I used proportions. Tall guy, same proportions as short guy means there isn't an advantage for either (point already made before).
If you're walking around on twigs, then you have every reason to be doing a few more pull ups. But then you ask what those people can squat. It'll never be any more than two wheels on each side of the bar if they're going parallel.
Now a days you see guys with huge muscles but they are dam weak and I was wondering how many of you guys dominate the pull ups, and by dominating i mean if you can do more then ten in a row?
Whats the point of having lots of muscle if at the end of the day you can't even lift your own body weight.
I normally do wide grip pull ups with 40kg assisted weight. I feel more confident that I'll soon be able to do some body weight ones, but not yet.
Well, I can do bodyweight pull ups!!!
I managed 4 today, the last one wasn't the best form but at least I did it. I know it's not great compared to some of you guys, but it's the first time I've done unassisted pullups.
I also got a personal best deadlift of 2 reps of 115kg/253lbs!

I'm a former Marine and older, but I guess it's a Jarhead thing with pullups. I usually do weighted. I figure if I can do 20, that's good enough. Now I'm working on single arm pullups.

One's enough. I mean seriously what's the point of doing pullups? LOL how many times will I need to Bruce Willis myself through a ceiling??

OOHRAH!!!
Yeah i knew nothing about pullups when i came in the Marines, did about 8 on my first PFT, but after years of being forced to do them now they are 90% of my workouts
Single arm!!!! Ive never seen those done by anyone IRL, i havent even attempted to do them
