I looked like crap when I first started. What matters is that you are making progress. Use yourself as an example

I went from comments like "YOU'RE a trainer?"
to comments like, "You're a trainer aren't you?"

If you are on a journey and are making good progress, you will be able to relate to a lot of people.. good luck

it all depends.
their is a trainer at my local gym who is a bit pudgy....
last week the original teacher of one of my classes was sick so this trainer stepped in to take over teh spot that night....i completely misjudged this trainer because of the extra weight....we got our asses handed to us lol.

if you put yourself out their as a tariner who has personally made a huge transformation, many people will like you. most ppl assume trainers were born lean and never had fat on them and had muscles by the time they were 18. when they see someone who has went down the road of being fat, it tells them that you can relate...and helps them to be comfortable. use the fat as a marketing tool!

Not at all. If you know your stuff and are professional people may even identify with you more because you're not a fitness model/bodybuilder/athlete, etc.

It's not what you look like, It's what you know and can offer to a client. There are many trainers in my area, that don't practice what they preach, but make their clients happy as the end result. The old phrase" If you are a plumber, your house always has leaking pipes" fits well. Some folks are good at what they do for others, just not themselves!!!

Good Luck!

My clients are my source of income so I certainly don't want to sound arrogant when I say this. But my clients were, by definition, fat when they first came to me. Many clients in my area don't want to look like bodybuilders or fitness models. They'd be extremely happy if I help them shed some pounds. Having said this, they appreciate the fact that over a year ago I was obese. They can relate. They know that I know what they are going through, so my relationship with them is that much stronger.

In your case, you can use to your advantage the fact that you were once out of shape. Show your clients some pics of you before and after. They will appreciate that their trainer is just "a regular guy" who also happens to practice what he preaches. Good luck.

Of course there are cases where the trainer is lazy and doesnt try to improve themselves...That could potentially be harmful to your reputation. There is one trainer at my gym who is overweight, and I'm saying that nicely. She doesnt get many new clients or alot of the ones that try her end up leaving. It might be her personality though as well cause she always looks tired and bored when she's with people.

Anyways, my advice would be go for it, if the people like you and you keep working yourself and use yourself as an example, you'll get people talking about you in a good way.

Unless they are taking a trainer as a fashion accessory then I know most people prefer someone who is a regular guy rather than a tanned bodybuilder, indeed a lot of people are simply intimidated by this look.

I think you would do well, especially if you use the this is what I did to myself and if I can do it so can you line.
