Did people really think the Russians were gonna nuke us during the Cold War?
Why was this even a real concern? If Russia nuked us we would nuke them. Did people at the time realistically think there was a chance the Russians would nuke us, or was it just a tiny possibility?
Uh you need to do some more research into the subject. It was about who could gain technology to complete destroy the other side in a first strike so they could not retaliate.
It was a threat that hung over our heads, yes. The main line of thought was that we were in a standoff, kinda like two gun fighters with their hands over their weapons, waiting to see if the other flinched first.
At least that's the way it felt.
Russia bragged. We bragged.
Kinda like most high school yard fights - puffed chests, circling, name calling, maybe a shove or two but no one threw a punch.

BTW they had like 10,000 nuclear war heads, they arnt just going to bomb one section and call it off. Try all of the US and probably bordering countries also.

in retrospect, everything seems so easy. i think you would have had to live through the time period to really understand it.

uhh unless you have a nuke that goes at the speed of light, wouldn't either country know the second the other one launched a nuke and launch one in return?

how would they know? also, look into the cuban missile crisis.

we came only hours away during the Cuban missile crisis. and we had no doubt we could fire some missile off back but we were trying to avoid the whole thing. one of the concerns felt by America was that we weren't even sure who was in charge inside the Kremlin. we would get different letters/statements from differnt politicians and this made us very uneasy when you're talking about the push of a button made by any one of these people.
also, when fidel castro took over cuban and declared it Communist, suddenly Communism was 90 miles away from our border.

Same reason why the American government wants you to think that Iran wants nuclear weapons to destroy everyone around them. That didn't stop retarded generals on both sides of the cold war of planing a winnable nuclear confrontation. British analysts performed a study which concluded that if just a single 30megaton nuclear bomb went off in a major British city, the aftermath would kill about 15 times more people than the actual explosion, the report concluded that w/o a sound infer structure, the government would not be able to support the population hence the mass die out.
how did people live their lives normally back then? the world could have ended by accident or by war at any time. Why weren't people freaking out all the time?
imagine acerimrat during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
It had a bit to do with the carefree lifestyle of many during that period, to be perfectly honest, certainly at least by my time in the '70s. I can't imagine how freaked the kids were back in the '50s, being told to hide under their desks in school if they saw the flash.
OP - You just watch the Watchmen brah? That what brought about this line of thinking?
