How to retain muscle with HEAVY cardio?
Going to basic (boot camp) and would like to know what I can do to minimize muscle loss. I will be doing LOTS of cardio and accept the fact that I will loose some fat and muscle, I just want to minimize my losses.

Just keep your body fed and look into some Glutamine. It's really inexpensive and works well.
GL with boot camp bro.

As my colleague told you, take lots of L-Glutamine - 20-30 grams/day.

glutamine is a waste when it's already in most protein powders.
OP, what's your definition of heavy? sprints? long distance? you mention boot camp so im guessing distance. you just have to make you get enough cals in. (not to mention protein)

Depends on what boot camp your going to. If your are going to the Army, Im not sure what it is like or if they let you keep personal affects like supplements you wont have time to do any of that.
Take it from me if you go into the Marines your not allowed to have any of that stuff. Everthing gets taken from you and as far as nutrition your not going to have time to decide what you get to eat. You just have food thrown on your plate.
Honestly you are going to lose mass in boot camp there is no way around, you're on their time now. Your are training from 5am to 10pm. I went from 205lbs to 155lbs when i graduated.

yeah i agree with this^^^... i went through basic and losing muscle mass is the last thing on you rmind....surviving is numero uno and throwing down as much food as you can in 2 minutes per meal is second so just focus on muscle mas and supplemenbts and working out when you get to your first duty station

You aren't going to be allowed to do anything differently than the other hundred guys with you.
Eat when you can eat and sleep when you can sleep. You'll get plenty of exercise.

Where exactly are you going to get all this "glutamine" and food in basic? It's inevitable. Just eat what you can and that's basically the best you can do.

Increase your protein massively. Hell, overall calories. Minimise as much damage as possible.
If you're doin tons of cardio, and not much heavy weight training, you will most likely lose a bit of muscle. That's just what happens unfortunately.

Yeah I agree about the glutamine.
I'd also suggest you BRING A LARGE AMOUNT OF OLIVE OIL. I AM NOT JOKING. I have straight up DRANK IT for calories. Butter is more calorically dense but will spoil.
If you can bring BCAAs too and take them w/ the glutamine PWO.
EAT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN EACH MEAL no matter what.

****ing **** balls. What was your original weight before your 205 bulk? I started training from 155-160 and now I'm 180lbs. The last thing I want is to shrink to 160 again.

This man speaks the troof!!! You're going to lose mass whether you like it or not. You're not going to have supplements available to you, at least not for a good while and you're not gonna be able to pick foods during chow. You get what they give you and you better shovel it in your mouth quick! I dropped a good 40 lbs myself when I went in. I lost some muscle mass but there wasn't much I could do about it.

What's with all the advice about bringing things?
YOU CAN'T USE THEM IN BOOT CAMP.
Do you really think they would allow people to have bottles of olive oil, protein bars, etc? No, you get what they give you (3 meals a day) and you exercise a lot. That's how it works.

I don't think they read the question.
I wouldn't worry about it in basic. You'll have time later. You are still pretty young.
