Can you be too deep into Ketosis?
Hi All,
Well I'm happy to report that im deep in keto. (recent posts I havent been - however I just needed a good old carb up as I hadnt had one. I guess im someone who needs the carb ups is what I've learnt)
One question though. Im using ketostix - but am always testing fairly dark purple in the range. Is this ok? Thought I read somewhere on the forum here that it can mean the body isnt sucessfully/efficiently using ketones yet if you are always testing dark.
Im drinking heaps of water and green tea.
Any thoughts? Is it all ok?
I seriously have a keto stick habit. Cant help but test all the time!!!! lol

u cant be too deep in ketosis, dark means a high ketone to water ratio. ur either eating a **** load too much fat, or ur not drinking enough water, try 3-5 litres a day.
PS it will take a while for ur body to fully adapt to ketosis

Many people get dark readings at first. Drink plenty of water to reduce the colour. Once your body is used to ketosis, it will start using the ketones instead of pissing them away.

Cheers for the responses.
I am doing at least 3 litres of water per day. So perhaps it is linked to my fat intake? Will need to recheck macros again. I was guilty of too much protein before and not enough fat. Maybe now i've tipped the balance.
Im feeling great - yknow that part euphoric feeling true ketosis delivers. Belt is in a notch too. But just wanted to make sure im on the right track with how im testing.
Cheers again guys.

I don't think that deep purple on the ketostix is something you should try to "achieve." Assuming that you are trying keto to lose fat, then you should be trying to achieve three things:
1. Adequate protein intake 1-1.5g/lb depending on the severity of your caloric deficit and training regimen (which is higher than normal because you should be at a caloric deficit.)
2. 50-70% of your daily caloric intake from fats
3. caloric deficit
Like I said earlier, you should increase your protein intake above normal when you are in a caloric deficit and trying to maintain muscle mass

Drinking more water will definetely help, you want to flush the ketones out of your system anyway since they are toxic
And ketones are metabolised fat, meaning its fat the body has already used and metabolised and is now just pissing it away since it is toxic to the body

I believe 'deep ketosis' only showed beneficial effects for epileptic children. It isn't really anything to shoot for.

I think you are confusing ketosis with ketoacidosis:
"Ketones Are Toxic
?Ketones are toxic.? I wish I had a dime for every time I heard that one. I guess the highly respected researchers who published the following article didn?t get that memo (Cahill GF Jr, Veech RL. Ketoacids? Good medicine? Trans Am Clin Climatol Assoc. 2003;114:149-61).
Ketones are a by-product or a waste product when your body burns stored fat for energy. The scientists from the study above actually refer to ketones as ?superfuel? and describe therapeutic uses of ketones for a variety of disease states. Why do ketones get such a bad rap?
First, there is confusion between the ketosis that develops with carbohydrate restriction with diabetic keto-acidosis, a life-threatening state that can occur in type 1 diabetics who aren?t treating their condition appropriately. Nutritional ketosis, on the other hand, is simply a term used to describe the normal process of producing and using ketones for energy. When ketones are produced, it indicates fat is being broken down rapidly. Ketones are used for energy and spare breakdown of muscle protein. Ketones also suppress your appetite.
Ruling From The Court: Far from being toxic, ketones could just be the perfect fuel for dieters. "
