I work in a freezer warehouse. Hard manual labour + long hours + unforgiving environment = big paycheque. I also count it as an 8 hour cardio session, lawlz.

So for those who actually have a job right now, what do you do and how'd you manage to get one?

I make $11.55/h right now part time at a lumber yard. They had about 20 applications for my spot when i applied, and i knew that.. So i talked to the yard foreman (manager) about the job ahead of time and I got a call to come in for an interview the next day. I've learned that the easiest way to get a job is to know your employer or have a reference (friend) who works there.
Don't just hand in an app, talk to a manager beforehand and give a good impression.
edit: this summer me and my workout buddies are going to do some fulltime roofing at $18/h. The owner of the company saw us working out and talked to us, was impressed with our strength, etc.
I also had another job offer from someone who came into the lumber yard who looked at me and said "you lift don't you?" and from that he wanted to hire me on the spot for a 17/h job to do drywalling or putting the concrete in basements (his company does both).

We have the strip (Las Vegas) which has a lot of employment opportunity but there's been a lot of major hotel/casino layoffs too.
I don't even have my permet yet (yes stupid) so transportation becomes a factor.
Still looking though, browsing craigslist right now.
EDIT: haha...HoneyBaked Ham is looking to hire 20 new people, I'll hit them up tomorrow I guess...

exactly man, you need to get to the top of the pile. Also, hand in your application to the manager you talked to if possible (not a cashier, i'll explain that). We get so many applications any new ones we get are just discarded now, even if there is a job open we don't keep more than like 10 i think. It could be the same at alot of places, or they will have so many apps they just won't look at yours. If the person who is actually going to be calling you for an interview has your application in your hand, remembers you (fill in your application promptly after meeting them) they are far more likely to read it and give you a call or just pull you in for an interview on the spot if they have an opening.
Lie about your availability if you have to, after you are hired just say your school sport or w/e is now starting in a week or something, they will give you the hours you want and move other peoples hours around who don't give a ****. Be ruthless.

Most of the idiots I've ever met there don't know **** about supplements. I could actually do GNC some good!
The places I'm trying to work at (anywhere) either isn't hiring or if they are I'm too young to work there.

Alright, good stuff.
I found 2 jobs after just skimming through the first few pages on craigslist, I'll go check 'em out tomorrow and give that a shot.
(So at least these ones will actually be hiring.)

Seriously, I'm just settling for whatever I can get at this point!
I hear construction makes good money but it's seasonal and I thought you had to be 18? (See, my age is really ****ing me over right now.)

I would do "underground work" if I were you, where you get paid under the table.
landscaping (just mow lawns) babysitting (sounds gay, but both my sisters make $60-80 in a couple of hours)
I mowed lawns back at 15-16 (old school push mower, not self propelled lol) and made a ton of money.
$30 a cut twice a week (thats what they wanted) $60 a week workin a MAX of 4 hours was great for me.

Currently working as a greasemonkey in my father's auto shop. I'm on salary, so I make the same no matter how much I work, but I usually work more than what I get paid. Comes out to like 5.70$ an hour after taxes (barely pay the bills)..
I also work at a nearby hospital doing clerical work, real boring. Pay depends on the shift, but 9$-11$ before taxes. However, the hospital is going to merge with another nearby hospital in a new location, so they are cutting jobs where possible to make room and cut costs. I'm still on the employee list, but getting no hours at the time being.
Got the first job becuase boss is my father, and the second because I'm in medschool and the position was available to the students..

That's what I used to do when I lived in Montana, but there's hardly any opportunity like that around here. (The landscaping aspect, that is.)
I'm searching for an actual job now (not just for $$ but for experience too...mostly for $$ though).
Went out again today, everyone says to go online and apply there. Every 9/10 places I go to aren't even hiring though.

lol at mopping being hard, u fukin srs?
this is probably the best youre gonna get being 16 and youre not gonna make anything great. I calculated i make 15 and hr at the least and theres days i make around 25 an hour, all cash in my pocket at the end of the night. Give it time i was only making 9 50 at 16, which is more than most 16 year olds make.

getting a job
when you look for a job, try to get one that you can have a future with, knowing the casino business, you are 16 , if you go to any casino , example harrahs they all have arcades , you only need to be 16, then when you turn 21 you can transfer to the casino floor, cashier cage , slot host , bar back, etc. plus you get 401 k , insurance, vacation pay , and if you start now , you could have a long and lasting career. awesome opertunity.
good luck,
