Is a coach needed to compete
I plan on competing in a Ms. Physique competition in June. I don't know exactly what the judges are looking for. I know some of the pros train with a coach, so I sought out some help. The coach that I found takes too long replying to simple questions. He still hasn't given me a price list yet either. I want to know if I even need a coach, or if competition DVD's, books, articles etc are enough for success.

In my opinion dont go in cold....! DISASTER!
My answer to that is yes!! DEFINATELY i will give you 5 reasons why!
1. You need to know how to pose (or look like and idiot!)
2. You need to know what the judges are looking for
3. You need to know how to walk stop and take a pose properly
4. You also need to know small lil things that can possibly help behind the scenes. Prep seminar is good for #4 though.
5. You need to know what and when to eat! A coach should know that too!
Those are just a few reasons i have one right now showing me how to pose. Hes been on stage 15 times approx. He knows how to hold his feet, where to put your arms, how high they should be (or low), shoulder back up etc. Its a lil different for women though. Make sure you have someone who knows how women should pose. BUT YES COACH FOR SURE!!!! There is so much i never would of thought of or to do its so awesome haveing experience on your side whether personal or whether it be someone elses!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hope this this all helps.

I personally don't think a "coach" is necessary to compete. You can get the same thing from seasoned competitors if your can't afford a "coach". I started with an awesome trainer (Jolene Carter: www.jolenecarter.com) and the best nutritionist (Keith Klien). I never paid for a coach. My trainer was a former competitor who helped with my posing as well. This is such an expense hobby that buying into all the "hoopla" and things that people say are necessary can be costly. On the other hand, if you have no other options, I guess you should go for it.....best of luck to you.

NO! I started competing in 1999 when nobody really knew what competing was except for bodybuilding. I also live in a fairly small town in Idaho where we had no "coaches" and online trainers didn't exist.
I studied videos, practiced posing on my own, and learned the biggest lessons from competing. I have several titles and have never had a coach, trainer, or nutritionist.
My husband is now helping me with training, but before last summer, it was a one-person show. I am proof you can do it on your own (and save a ton of $$$)! Good Luck!!

Thanks everyone. I'll take all of that into consideration. I want to save as much $ as possible.

Not necessarily a coach, but I would strongly suggest a mentor or experienced partner.

Yeah i guess in the lines of a coach like i said before. Yes but i really have a mentor that happens to be a coach and a good one at that so i guess i am lucky there. So if you know the right person you dont have to hire one i guess.

I would absolutely hire someone to put together your diet...someone that has experience with prepping clients for the stage. Nutrition is the most important part and it will make you or break you come show time.
You could purchase a posing dvd. I know some local gyms will have trainers come in to have posing seminars...maybe make some calls and see what's in your area.
Good luck to you!

Ok, so that was yesterday. I'm too late for that now. I might check out the competitions on May 8 and 9th though. Thank you.

The rates fluctuate a ton. I have seen everything from $300 for an entire prep to $1000 a month.

i would def get someone to help you with your diet.. it is easy to second guess yourself and you really dont want to worry about stuff like that bc you will be stressed enough. if you have the money hire someone, if you prefer not to, there are tons of site to gather information. you can get posing dvd's and used suits at divaexchange.com

It takes alot of pressure off if you have someone do your diet. I do most of my training on my own,but i do have someone do my diet.
