Foot Pain

This morning about a quarter of the way into my cardio session (running outside, on the blacktop road, good running shoes), the arch in my left foot started to hurt. I thought it might be a pinched nerve, so I worked through it. After cardio, it started hurting bad enought to make me limp. Now, I am not limping but it is still hurting pretty good when I walk. When I walk for 10 min. or so it eases up a little but after sitting for a while (I have a desk job) then walking again, it hurts. Any thoughts? It kind of feels like a shin splint in my foot.

If it's in the arch, then it's most likely Plantar Fascitis (I think that's the spelling). I think that my doctor explained it this way, it is a breakdown of the collagen protecting the tendon connections across the arch of your foot.

I got it in the fall while coaching soccer and couldn't get it to go away for 4 months. I got a cortisone shot in the bottom of the heel, that didn't fix it. I went on line and found where I could place a tennis ball on the floor and while standing with pressure on the ball, roll my arch back and forth across the ball. This worked and the problem went away in about a week.

If it's Plantar Fascitis then it really hurts first thing in the am.

Good luck.

I also had this from running and road marching in the Army. Good stretching, and warm up helped but ultimately I had to get insoles made by VA. Seems to have helped some. The bottom line is your arch is falling due to lack of support and stretching beyond it capability, you have to support your arch somehow

Thats a good point!

I forgot to mention that I bought Superfoot insoles for my shoes. These really help with the recovery process.

Also, if you're incorporatiing a good deal of running into your training, I would go to an actual running sports store (not just the big box stores like Sports Authority or Dick's) to buy shoes. There, they can look at the way your foot reacts when you walk/run while being barefoot and reccomend the appropriate shoes for your type of arch. Be prepared though, they aren't always very cheap but your health is worth the investment!!

Sometimes we get fooled by going to the mall and finding a fancy pair of new running shoes, pick them up and they are actually hurting us.

I had this same condition and a change of shoes that supported my arch correctly alleviated the problem all together and it hasn't bothered me since.

Good luck!

Hold up on any cortisone shots! I'd seen several threads with this dreaded thing people call Plantar Faciitis. Of course, I ignored this weird sounding ailment. About 3mths ago, I had something wrong with my left foot. Hurt like hell in the morning, and would hurt in the evening after a day I ran on. And I mean hurt. I was certain I had fractured my foot somewhere around the arch.

But before going to a doc, I decided to ask fellow runners what they thought it might be. That dreaded term came up again. However, this link changed everything for me; http://physicaltherapy.about.com/od/...ootstretch.htm

I do the "Achilles Stretch" only, and it has made the PF pretty much go away, and is only sometimes felt...but to a much lesser degree. I was simply amazed that this simple little exercise could possibly solve what I was feeling in my foot.

Try it.

I've been dealing with this too for the last couple months. It's hit me before, but this time it's being stubborn. Really kicks me after a squat or dead workout. I picked up a pair of inserts at Walgreens, but if it doesn't improve soon I'll have to go and get a pair of custom inserts.......... will have to try that stretch first though.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I will take it all into consideration. I am definitely going to try those stretches. I couldn't do my run this morning because it hurt so bad. My pain is dead center between the toes and heal, on the outside of the bottom of my foot. I'm going to try to stay off of it as much as possible today and this weekend and try the stretches. If it's not better by Monday, I will probably go see my Doc.

If it's not better by Monday, I will probably go see my Doc.
I never tried the other exercises, but the arch stretch worked well for me. For me, the pain is mainly in the heel of the foot, but is/was also felt in the arch. I'd bet money that you have PF.

What's the worst that can happen if you just let it go and self-treat it?

I'm not really sure about that, as I only skimmed the subject since the stretches worked for me. But apparently, the stretches may or may not keep it away, even though they help. It's made enough difference for me that I can deal with the small amount I have now. I have a touch of it today, and it's not a running day. Even if it was, I usually can work through it quickly when running. It's hours later that it hits me.

I know what you mean there. Funny thing is, it doesn't hurt when I am running. It hurts before and then after it hurts like hell. Usually I work through it, after passing 14+ kidney stones, I have quite a high pain tolerance. This morning though, it was hurting a little more so I thought I better give it a rest. Thanks again for your advice.

When I walk for 10 min. or so it eases up a little but after sitting for a while (I have a desk job) then walking again, it hurts. Any thoughts? It kind of feels like a shin splint in my foot.
Plantar Fasciitis? Roll a tennis ball under your arches while you're watching tv.

I had Plantar Fasciitis a couple of years ago. As everyone has said, it was extreme pain. Could barely walk when waking in the morning. I paid $650 to a foot doctor to make special insoles for my shoes. The soles restrict the movement of the foot enabling it to heal. It took quit a while but it worked. I have a neighbor that actually went all out and had surgery. I don't know if it worked for him or not. In addition to the soles I also did all the stretches. Good Luck - Not Fun

Well, I hope it's just a strain but it seems all is pointing PF. I've been taking it easy and I will be doing the stretches all weekend and probably from now on. We'll see what that gets me. My budget just won't allow for expensive shoes or insoles.
