Post workout carbs

I normally lift in the morning, so consuming a fast digesting carb post wrkt is fine. Though on Wed. I lift in the evening. (power leg day) By the time I get home it is close to 9pm. I know eating simple carbs is a no-no at night, however, I want my 1.5 scoops of pure whey (that I consume with about 1/4 cup white rice) to get rushed to my muscles for fast recovery. do you think this rice is corrupting my goals? If I were to opt for a slow carb (oatmeal) then wouldn't it really digest too slow for that time of night? I'm hoping that the rice I do consume is being converted before being stored. Thoughts please?

Hey, I'd go with maltodextrine. Go on cal king.com and find out how much malto is equal to 1/4 cup white rice.

I say that because the purpose of post training carbs is to get your muscle glycogen back up fast. You'd probably only want 20g carbs.

I agree with the above post; however, white rice does digest quickly, so I wouldn't worry about eating it at night.

There is nothing wrong with eating rice at night. As long as your getting your daily numbers in I don't care if your last meal is at midnight and includes fats and carbs...you'll be fine.

Q and A from my website:

You definitely should be eating carbohydrates following your workouts and this holds true regardless of the time of day you train. The suggestion to cut carbohydrates off at a certain time comes from the idea that insulin sensitivity is highest in the earlier parts of the day and falls as the day progresses. According to a number of research papers, carbohydrate metabolism is rather poor in the evening.

However, exercise, and weight training in particular, is the great equalizer. Exercise creates a 'carbohydrate window' where your body is very responsive to carbohydrate intake. The post-workout period is characterized by a period of heightened insulin sensitivity and therefore positive nutrient partitioning. Basically, carbohydrates consumed in the post-workout period, regardless of time of day, are preferentially stored in muscle, where we want them to begin with.

becca...your falling into the old school thinking that carbs are bad at night. think of your body as a gas tank when it comes to food. its not bad to fill up at night, obviously dont go overboard. Simple carbs mixed with complex carbs and protein, morning OR night is fine. After your workout, your glycogen stores are empty (carbs stored in muscles)....fill thoose puppies up after a workout, your body will thank you, and heal up faster.

Question

thx for answers. It was as I thought, just had to dbl check.
Next question...
I plan on competing in July. In May I will increase cardio and deplete simple carbs post wrkt. Would oatmeal be the carb of choice post wrkt? Or is a fast digesting carb still a necessity during the cutting weeks? I am 10-12 pounds from contest weight now.
