Herniated Discs, What can I do to exercise?

I recently herniated the L4/L5 and L5/S1 discs in my lower back, after my MRI the Radiologist also found that I have little, to no cartilage between these discs (it looked as though a back of a 70yr old he said). I'm wanting to stay in shape while resting and was just wondering if anyone had recovered from this type of injury and what they did in the weeks thereafter the injury to stay in shape.

Thanks,

BigEastisKING

You should have no problem doing pull-ups and dips. You'll get a decent upper body workout and spinal traction at the same time.

When I had my L5-S1 herniation, I was able to do those two exercises right away. I was also able to pedal a spin bike lying flat on a bench placed behind the bike. It took a while before I was able to do much in the way of strength training for my lower body. Probably the best suggestion I can make is to start working with a physical therapist who specializes in spinal rehab for athletes.

i've been living with hernated disks, L5 S1 for at least 10 years now, i pretty much don't do anything for legs but lungs on a smith machine. but i can do things like standing shurges without any problems, just gotta be careful with what exercises u are doing , i'd say u should stay away from squats because they place to much weight on the spine, i'm prolly looking at spinal surgery in a year or so.. but anyways good luck to all of u with back problems... train smart.....later
