yeh i did my team actually played a game i think its our 5th game in pretty much 4 months and considering its mid-season that aint great. i also nearly died playin with the flu isnt great got beat 13-3 buy a team 3 leagues above us and to be honist our whole team felt gutted i reckon on another day with a slightly different team we might of beat em but ahh well. got a game next sunday whats that about stupid SRU and the 6nations cos the scotland games on a saturday, when everybody at our club would rather play than watch scotland and we also have alot of guys who work sundays its going to be another fun outing in the cup or shield/bowl/plate thing not sure what diddy tier we've moved down to. i also think our teams been watching to much of the national team as we just can't seem to score tries and with poor kickers we can't kick penalties and its really starting to cost us when in our last two games both second halfs have finished 0-0.

Just Learning
I played some Rugby in the Marine Corps but never learned much about the rules and specifics. My daughter plays in school for their PE and loves it. We just ordered a practice ball and a rule book to learn more. We are going to play to add some different workouts to our day. I am 45 so it probably will never get to where I play in a real game. However I would love to learn more. We just switched to DirectTV so I can get Setantal Sports and start following the game and we will be watching a game today at 11:00. So I have a couple questions to broaden my knowledge. Now remember I am new to this and these questions will be the super basics.
1) What is the difference between League and Union Rugby
2) What is a maul
3) What is a try
OK that is where I will start and I will ask more as I go. I appreciate anyone who would take the time to answer these for me. Thanks.

I'm a new player and im pretty out of shape since i got to college, ive gotten weak and fat, im looking to start training for the upcoming rugby season as a forward, what should i be focusing on? size? strength? cardio? just looking for some keywords so i can decide to ether bulk or lose fat right now im 6'0 about 210-215, im pretty weak so a majority of that weight is higher bf%

theres loads of clubs near me, ive just moved to the club i'm at havn't even been there a year, tbh i'm reasonably happy where i am, might re-think at the end of the season, i mean we can and should still get promoted plus theres still a chance of a final and i really wana do with my rugby is win stuff, plus i quite fancy a season abroad which would probably mean moving around this time next year so there would be no point moving clubs again esp for half a season.

1)league to union, couple of the main differences are league 13 players, union has 15, no rucks mauls or lineouts in league the scrums arn't contested in league, in league you get a set of 5tackles and then its a turnover but most teams will usually kick sorta like the 4the down.
2) a maul is when 3players become involed in a tackle situation and are still on their feet, whereass a ruck is when the tackled player and usualy the tackled player are on the ground then a third player joins to form a ruck(probably not the best defintion)
3) a try is when a player grounds the ball over(on) the tryline/in the dead ball area or if you wana look at it from a football point of view the 'endzone'
hope that helps at bit, once you watch a few games you'l pick up the basics pretty fast, ive been playing the game for years and i still don't know all the rules but thats becasue i like to play the ref's rules in every game.

Are you going to be a loose forward like a flanker or 8 man, or tight 5 and be a lock? Either way you're going to need to develop leg strength to help out in the scrum, endurance because scrumming is very taxing, and speed for tackles and when you have to help out the back line. I'd say get into a solid strength training regiment, at least 3 days a week, and focus on sprint intervals.

I play U18 div 1 in South Australia. Our teams pretty good but rugby in south australia isn't as good as other states in Australia like NSW and QLD. Couldn't really compare it to standards of South Africa or England coz i've never been there but basically play for top team possible in my state.

Thanks
Thank you Toad1. That is very helpful. I just bought a Rugby ball for my kids and I to mess around. My daughter and I watched our first game at home together. We were routing for Ulster but they lost. Oh well. We look forward to learning more about the game as we go. It's my favorite game.

ellon, the loss on saturday was more annoyin as we pumped them up there in preseason and the fact that thier tries came from two freak mistakes, did u see one of the bulls tries verses the blues at the weekend were the blues back canny mind who, kicked it to the bulls 8 and he ran it in, the exact same thing happened to us they never really created a single chance for themselfs on another day we wuda beat them having our 7 at 12 didn't help either. i felt they where very poor for a prem side, and at the end of the day they where just that bit bigger and used to playing better opostion everyweek.
yeh howe did well but tbh id expect them to get a few upset esp at home, really thought we wuda went through tho really fancied playing stirling county away in the next round, hows ur cup run doing?

grammar are still winning two hard away wins at ardrossen and Irvine... i havent played this year yet... been injured... skiing and off skiing again...
haha ellon are our local rivals for some reason they hate us... we are supposed to train with them every few tuesdays but it never happened...
they supposedly suck this year... most of their better players have left and come to us... my old school friend usually plays seven for then and he is good... along with the ryan brothers...
how did you play against them...

irvine that was the hypothermia game wasnt it, can't really say i mind much bout idvidual players their backrow played well prob the best part of thier team more so their 6 and 8 they carried alot of ball and the times they did they made yards but that was bout it, but i don't really see much of the game outside of scrums and rucks so it may of looked different, duno who the ryan brothers are/where wot pos do they play, personally thought i played ok died about 55mins in tho but went back on 10mins later, got a few scrums agaisnt the head had a good wee tusle with their 3 he was nowhere near as good as i was expecting, untill my rest then i think they changed losehead and mayb hooker when i went back on and we dominated their scrum last 10mins.

I just wondered if the Chad Waterbury ABBH program was any good. I have had an injury since christmas, so i decided that i would right off this year off and start a fresh. I play wing and sometimes flanker if needed there, i heard some good stuff about this training and there seems to be an order of programs which he suggests. Like ABBH, ABBH then the Waterbury method. Any views or ideas would be good.

Lifting Stats mean s*** in rugby... well not alot!! Its not all about how much you can lift!! You need to have technique as well as strength. For example you would be useless in the front row because you dont have a clue about the technique!!
I would tell your coach that you are new to rugby and that you are not quite sure where to play. Each position has skills that you require and the only way you will be able to get these are if you watch people play, read books, speak to people and get information from the coach.
What height are you?! Sort of fast.... is this a single sprint or is sort of fast after running for 30 mins and then having to do a 50m sprint?! These are all things that you need to consider!!

Ok well if yoru fast over 100m's you probably dont want to be in the forwards!!
Explosion is key to alot of positions so i would work on heavy squats and single leg squats, jumps, etc to work on that!!
If you have endurance and can do 100m's a few times on the trot then i suppose you could look at a centre or winger... its hard to suggest a position. It depends on your ball skills etc!!

Weak pass and your frame = wing.

So as you can see in my name, I play in the tight five, but recently I've wanted to move to inside centre. I'm fairly strong and I can hold onto the ball very well so I think I'd be good at breaking holes and such. My cardio is getting better, and so is my speed. I don't have the hands to keep up with the backs, but considering I'm working on them, would this be something I could manage or should I just stick to the tight five?

Disclaimer, the following is personal opinion:
Stick to the tight five. Keep working on the hands and make your goal a move to flank or #8. My coaches tell us that if we want the ball more, to pick up our fitness level and get involved in the game more. Don't take any phases off and the ball will find its way into your hands.

Yeah I know what you mean, I like the pyschicality(sp?) of the tight five, but I also like the bashing holes aspect of inside centre. I guess flanker would be a better desicion.

If youre not fit, get fit. if you are, get acceleration.
btw, having a fast hundred metre doesnt mean you shouldnt be forward, contrary to what will87 said.

Heard of crash ball off inside centre....... this could be you!! i wouls suggest picking your fitness up!!
I have been thinking about this toooo, i want to move out the front row and move on to the flank but i lvoe being in the front row!! So in the end i decided to jsut work on my fitness and strenght and mentality (sp!?). I started to get lazy on the field but now i loook at it liek i will make it to that break down or i willmake it to the ruck... along with thinking like this and working on my fitness i am like a flanker but at the same time im doing my no 1 job and that is winnign scrums!!
Tight 5 should have as good hands as the centre... it is not an excuse these days and age not to have good hands. You should be working on 3 on 2 s and quick hand exercises in training!! Poor handling is not good enough excuses for a tight 5 anymore!!

i'm sure most of you will know these figures but they are the figures that jake white introduced for the springboks and i know its not all of the stats, but i thought the might help for all those guys who are wondering what postion the should play. most important from this is the speed and vertical jump time as not every one will be as strong as the figures want we'll maybe not straight away, for example the 1RM max bench for props i'm a long way off that but i can do the squat.
props-
10m 1.8secs
40m 5.56sec
vertical jump 55cm
1rm bench 150kgs
1rm squat 180kgs
bf%12
hookers-
10m 1.75sec
40m 5.5sec
vertical jump 60cm
1rm bench 150kgs
1rm squat 180kgs
bf%11
2nd row-
10m 1.75sec
40m 5.5sec
vertical jump 65cm
1rm bench 150kgs
1rm squat 160kgs
bf%12
loose forwards-
10m 1.72sec
40m 5.3sec
vertical jump 63cm
1rm bench 130 kgs
1rm squat 160kgs
bf%10
centres-
10m 1.65sec
40m 5.20
vertical jump 65cm
1rm becnh 130kgs
1rm squat 160kgs
bf%9
wingers-
10m 1.65sec
40m 5.10sec
vertical jump 68cm
1rm bench 130
1rm squat 160kgs
bf%9
obviously these are a guide and are minimums, and i know most of you guys will have seen these before and probably in the thread and i took them from a link in t-nation. but hopefully the might help a few guys pick a postion as for most of you guys from the usa most of you will know these stats esp the 40 and the jump whereass i have no idea what i do the 40 in or my vertical jump.(yes i know its metres and not yards 10m=11yards and 40m=43yards).
for height which i don't think is that important but i look at something like
props 6+foot
hookers doesn't matter but not taller than props
2nd row 6'3+ need to be tall for jumping
backrow 6+foot
backs i don't believe height matters in the backline although scrumhalfs are usually the smallest and postion selection is usaully more skill based.
and if that doesn't help i allways find strenght standards interesting.
