5'2 300 lb man talking on the cell phone (the entire time he's in the gym) about how hard he is working to loose weight.

What you say is fine, but these guys get assited throughout the set, I mean, USE LESS WEIGHT if you can't so a single rep without help. What's worse is, the spotter doesn't help him put the weights down nicely; he shouts words of homo-erotical encouragment while his friend slams the weights into the ground, creating an almighty sound. I deadlift quieter than these gaylords.

Yeah it's annoying when you are trying to workout and you see/hear someone banging down dumbells onto the ground beside you. Rude and off putting.

dumbasses in my gym
I would say the biggest dumbasses in my gym are the people who wear jeans and sometimes dress entirely in street clothes (jeans,boots,etc...). My goodness people invest in some gym clothes! Even worse than "jeans guy" is "sandle & flip-flop guy". Especially when he wears a t-shirt, gym shorts but then wears flip-flops? Couldn't go all the way huh? lol Just a side note: "jeans guy" is usually the guy with decent arms & upperbody, but no legs to speak of what so ever... Anybody else agree?

a couple of months ago i got done working out and wanted to tan, someone was in the bed so i got something to eat and came back about 25 mins later. Some dude that was obviously the boyfriend of a girl on a treadmill had already tanned, let the door that is supposed to be shut and locked open (you need a scan card to get in) and was standing in front of a mirror doing curls with 15 lb dumbells watching tv.
this is part of the reason i hate this gym and am getting a membership elsewhere.

We have this lad at our gym, he makes every one laff, but i dont think he relises hes doing it, as he comes back the next day and does the same.
He deadlifts and on the way up makes a loud screaming noise with makes the hole gym look at him then drops it. if that isnt bad enoughf he turns around and startes at everyone i think to make sure everyone was watching

Time wasters, socializers, and flirters bug me the most.
I get tickled at the people who come in and light on every machine in the gym only to do a few reps and rest 5 minutes then light on another machine only to repeat the process and never really work anything.
I always want to tell them "focus on one muscle group" but right now i'm not in shape enough they'd probably think "yeah looks like your workout's workin."

this one time a guy at my gym was doing katas in the mirror. i was with my muay thai coach at the time and he told me, "you should go up and ask him; "who is your sensei?" and act like i really care or something. but common, i don't go to the gym and shadow box in the mirror and katas are silly to begin with.

Every technique, move, defensive, and offensive tactics derive from your katas, you know that? Without them, you're nothing.
Whats wrong with a guy practicing his martial arts outside his dojo?

What better way to start with my first post than with this topic.
1. I HATEEEEEEE how Mr. Eddy Tough Nutts will Flat DB press 30's 6 times grunting and blowing air like a suped up Intake Vaulve and drop the DB's from the extented postion (wait its not over..) then sit up grab the DB then stand up and place them back on the rack!! B-A-N-A-N-A-S
2. The Beefcake that is fairly muscular in size who wears a bandana, gloves white tank, pants, and the elbow pads that a running back in the NFL would wear? I dont get it
3. Walking into the locker room and the first glimps you get is some crusted old F*** bending over with no pants on to put his socks on first!! NO SHAME I GUESS

a chap who chats with almost all and sundry while doing 4 sets of dumbbell kickbacks with 10 lbs dumbbells (yeah, while doing the exercise, and not between the sets), all the while explaining to us how this workout routine of this is an excellent one for building mass and losing fats at the same time. I did ask him once how much muscle he has gained/ fats he has lost over last 6 months, and he said 2 lbs weight loss, with about 1 inch loss from his waist.
To be fair, he does dips also for his triceps, but goes about 1/4 of the way down, and this he does for 15 reps for 3-4 sets apparently.

katas
there's nothing wrong with practicing outside the dojo. but anyway i know pro fighters who are high level that don't practice katas. it seems like a waste of time. better to do a good few reps of mit work, sparring, drilling, grappling, and conditioning.

Western boxing is based solely on thousands of years of people sparring in the gym and I don't think anyone would dare to say its not an effective fighting system. Functional techniques do not need to be derived from a choreographed dance... but if one is practicing a kata for the aesthetics, then that is perfectly cool!

I wear the lifting belt backwards because I have a strange pain in my groin/lower abdomen and I'm trying to prevent creating an abdominal hernia. I probably look like a dumbass. It's all good. I haven't worked out at a public gym in years but cell phones are by far the dumbest thing I ever see being brought to the gym. I bring mine, but only because its got an ipod in it. Usually keep it in airplane mode.

Katas are a base model for any fighter. You don't start out training as a UFC competitor right off the bat. You learn the basics (much like bodybuilding, compounds first) then move on and specify for whatever reason you fight for (UFC, self defense, muay thai, ect.). Comparing how much a UFC fighter and a Grandmaster in Karate do their katas is irrelevant.
If a guy wants to practice his martial arts outside a dojo, then why not. Having mirrors all around him is something he probably doesn't have at home, and if he decides to hit some weights or a run a bit, the gym is right there; it's more convenient and shouldn't count as a 'dumbass in your gym' imo.

I disagree about semantics here... Katas are a base for most martial arts enthusiasts, not for most fighters. When training martial arts for fitness, historical significance, and for the love of the art, katas are an integral part of training. However, when training to be a fighter, they are almost irrelevant.
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Boxing, Wrestling, and Thai Boxing are the base systems that an overwhelming majority of current MMA fighters use, and none of them use katas as form of practice. You can argue for any random martial art out there, cite anecdotal evidence based on fighters who study other disciplines, but the bottom line is you won't many fighters from the WEC, UFC, K1, Mundials, Abu Dabi Open, Etc. training with katas.
You will find those fighters training the basics however, so I would argue that katas are unnecessary and antiquated rituals for fighters, but interesting displays of form and memorization for enthusiasts.

I never said they should practice them every day or include them into their routine, I said it's a base model and should be used to start out on.

There are too many to pick from at my gym, since after all it is a planet fitness... It sucks but it is all I can afford at school.
Off the top of my head: Two very skinny asian kids proceed to the bench and put on about 185 lbs. One gets on the bench and the other helps him unrack the weight. He takes the bar down half way at the very most and then the other kid helps him get it back up. Mind you the spotter is probably lifting half of the weight for him.
They continue to do this for about 3 reps and then switch places and continue.
I really dont understand where people get ideas like this. This first thing you should learn is proper form and full ROM over anything else. What is the good in benching 185 lbs if you are only lifting 100 of it yourself and performing half reps

I don't know if this is a "no women allowed thread" but I used to live in the gym before I had my daughter and I have always lifted heavy and I COULD NOT STAND IT when someone hogged the weights or a machine! It's like if you're gonna sit there get the heck outta the way! Oh and the grunters disturb me terribly....especially if I can lift what you're lifting and stay quiet. Oh and the guys who scream and throw the weights as if they just lifted a building! so pathetic! But what really annoyed me was the guy who was gonna reach for the 20lb dumbbell until he saw me reach for the 25 or 30lb dumbbell and then he reaches for the like 40lb dumbbell and his arms are shaking the whole time he's doing his exercise! Come on dude! get yourself together! LOL I love these threads!!! This is why I workout at home I can't deal with dumb people!
