I started running 2 years ago at that time an 11 minute mile caused me to go anerobic and I had to quit at 1.7 miles completely dead and panting uncontrollably. Last fall I ran a 5k and avg. 7:23 per mile. You stamina will build quickly and hopefully you find a life long healthy habit.

I would like to add a HR monitor but I'm not sure how to use it.
Thanks for the suggestion.

That's kind of what I'm doing now, I've always lifted and never cared for running until recently but now I'm starting to love it.

Its really good for many reasons, you can build a history and watch the changes over time. It takes a lot of guessing out of it. Some days I feel like I'm knocking it out of the park, just to find out I stunk it up, other days I feel aweful and I must be having the slowest run ever and then find I knocked it out of the park. I started using a GPS with heart monitor combo, it gives me real time feed back, to what I am doing. This really is helpful if you are training for an event and have set a goal for the event.
It has been a great help to me.

They are very simple and come with instructions usually. There is a general formuala to use to figure your max heart rate, 220-age=max. This formula while a good starting point is not very accurate. For example I am 40 so 220-40=180 bpm, this should be my max heart rate, I have measured my max at 196bpm. You can also look online at many sites that will give you heart rate zones to use based on your max heart rate. Normally you want to keep your heart rate around 60% of your max for fat loss and starting out. When you feel more comfortable you can kick it up to 70-80% for a more vigorous workout and more cardio vascular improvement.
If you can't find the info feel free to ask me, I will answer as much as I can for you.

I have used the Polars without problem, currently I use a garmin forerunner305 its a couple of years old. It's hard to recommend not knowing what you want it to do. The basic ones are great, but dont store much data for you. As you go up the scale they mostly add data capabilites until you get to the ones that have gps and then it starts all over.
Both of these brands also have units that will do heart rate and have a foot pod that will measure distance also. These are cheaper, although less accurate than getting one with gps. Your choices are many, feel free to ask me any questions, I will answer if I can.

I'd only need the function of heart rate readout. I'm not a whistles and bells person, as I find that stuff always looks great...but never gets utilized. Lol, I still remember having PIP when it was first new on TVs. I would demonstrate it to friends and they'd say, "Wow, I'll bet you'll get some use out of that!" And I'd say, "Not really, the only time I ever use it is just to show people I have it, like I just did for you" (no, not a sports fan).
Anyway....thanks for the info.

I agree about the "bells and whistles"... and I also think a heart monitor is a great idea, but I really tend to just go on what my body is telling me, which I guess is probably easier after years of running, but I really HATE to wear anything more than absolutely necessary when I'm running. Just my shorts, top, socks, shoes, and my watch!

I like the part where you wrote,"...but I really tend to just go on what my body is telling me.." Last Wednesday I really hit my legs hard during my workout and just could not get any rhythm or speed whatsoever for the remainder of the week's runs. I ran 29:00 for the 3 mile on Friday! That was the worse run I've had in months. I rested the legs this weekend and today ran 23:05. I guess I was just shocked at that much variation in time, especially after a few personal bests.

I hear ya. That's probably the single most reason I never used an MP3 player when I first started running; I didn't want to burden myself with anything being bounced around beside my own fat . But little did I know then...that I'd swat so profusely when running that I'd probably short circuit any electronic device attached to me when running

OK... I forgot that I do religiously carry my ipod shuffle... but it's small enough to clip onto the bottom of my shirt and I usually then just have the cord to deal w/ and, if possible, will thread that through a jacket or my shirt.
Although, I have to admit that when the first ipod shuffle came out and had no "clip", I was stashing it inside a pocket I made inside the side of my shorts and YEP it soon was shorted out... Yuck!

LOL And, this is exactly why runners rest before a big race!

First time back since January 18th....... we were having a lovely warm January day, the kind that makes you want to go out and dig in the dirt.. so I did. After getting rid of some weeds and berry vines I started picking up sticks and wind blown rubbish from the yard, tossing it over the hill when......yup.... felt my back go. I baby stepped into the house, grabbed some tylenol, ice and the floor. I had x-rays that Thursday, Doc wanted to make sure all looked ok, and it did. I was in a major muscle spasm, she gave me a wonderful shot and some muscle relaxers and pain medicine. A couple of days later I was good, I start running tomorrow. I have been taking it way easy, this weekend I tested it out with some weights and the bike, and heavy house cleaning. Boy have I missed the mind clearing I recieve from running. I can hardly wait!!!

Geeez...I really struggled today. The first 1.3mi lap went great. On the second, I fought off stopping to walk twice, as I felt exhausted. I finally caved twice, but only for maybe 10 seconds each time. Back in my driveway after 2.6 miles, I caught my breath after maybe 60 seconds and went back and ran another .6mi. And then I did it once more for a total of 3.8 miles....the hard way . It was 30* or so outside and it felt good, but my legs just kinda felt numb and my stride just never felt well oiled.

Struggled w/ a trip to the mailbox!? Are we getting wimpy, hun!??? hehe
Unfortunately, running is like that... some days/runs are so great that you feel you can run forever , and the very next run might totally suck. Just appreciate the good ones!
I finally got back in the gym last night and the weights felt GREAT! and 3 miles scheduled for tonight!

Yep, I know that all too well. But for some reason, I just keep thinking it'll go smooth one day and just never change .

And then I did it once more for a total of 3.8 miles....the hard way . It was 30* or so outside and it felt good, but my legs just kinda felt numb and my stride just never felt well oiled.

As I'm learning from the more seasoned veterans, there are going to be days when that stride doesn't come together. I always use the word rhythm. I've noticed with me that the first mile or so is the toughest stride-wise and breathing-wise and that I consistently run faster toward the end of the run than at the beginning!
Today I'm dealing with a 25+ degree drop in temperature. Yesterday was almost 60 and I had a great run. Today, we're back in the 30s.
Hang in there buddy!

Yep, I know that all too well. But for some reason, I just keep thinking it'll go smooth one day and just never change .
Well, it's about freakin' time! No slacking! I want to hear you grunting all the way across the country!

And I can run further than that.

My run didn't go as well as the previous day's it actually took almost a minute longer.
It had just rained and the air felt so heavy trying to breathe, I don't know if it was the humidity or I was just slacking but at least I did it I guess.
