Screw the search, there's articles on wikipedia and the free areas of Brittanica for stuff like this. Basically, it's muscles growing in response to stress to have more contractile fibres, store more water and sugar, more water, etc. Differen't types. It's growth. More tissue is more potential to do work.

Do you think Pavel Tsatsouline would let us post a chapter from his PTTP book where he wants about useless muscle? It's hilarious.

No, toned physique means you make your muscles big enough and fat small enough that the mucles stand out. Hypertrophy means you make your muscles bigger.
For big muscles, you neet to give them fuel constantly and fight catabolism. This is easy if you eat lots of food and get fat, but it won't lead to the toned physique we all want.
For fat loss, you need to burn calories and not eat too much, and need growth hormone. It is often hard to do it without your body eating its own muscle.
That is why 90% of muscle building is done in the kitchen. You have to know what types of foods to eat and how much and when. That way you keep your muscle from getting eaten, give them the food they need, but don't fill up your fat cells. It is something I don't understand much.

I challenge you to answer the same question 200 times. Then will you still say we need to continue to ask even though we have stickies with the answers?

Strength training
Muscle hypertrophy due to strength training does not occur for everyone and is not necessarily well correlated with gains in actual muscle strength: it is possible for muscles to grow larger without becoming much stronger.[5]
Ultimately the message filters down to alter the pattern of protein expression. The additional contractile proteins appear to be incorporated into existing myofibrils (the chains of sarcomeres within a muscle cell). There appears to be some limit to how large a myofibril can become: at some point, they split. These events appear to occur within each muscle fiber. That is, hypertrophy results primarily from the growth of each muscle cell, rather than an increase in the number of cells.
Experts and professionals differ widely on the best approaches to specifically achieve muscle growth (as opposed to focusing on gaining strength, power, or endurance); it is generally considered that consistent anaerobic strength training will produce hypertrophy over the long term in addition to its effects on muscular strength and endurance. As testosterone is one of the body's major growth hormones, on average men find hypertrophy much easier to achieve than women. Taking additional testosterone as in anabolic steroids will increase results, but the psychological and physiological side-effects can cause serious health issues. It is also considered a performance-enhancing drug, the use of which can cause competitors to be suspended or banned from competitions. In addition, testosterone is also a medically regulated substance in most countries, making it illegal to possess without a medical prescription.
In order to get the best gains out of training sessions, experts agree on some basic principles, however some are contradicted by other research:
Progressive overload is considered the most important principle behind hypertrophy, so increasing the weight, reps, and sets will all have a positive impact on growth. Some experts create complicated plans that play around with weight, reps, and sets, increasing one while decreasing the others to constantly shock the body into growing. Keeping the sets and reps the same while just increasing weight will lead to growth but will focus more on developing muscular strength. Keeping the weight the same but doing more sets, or doing a few extra reps, may be more effective at stimulating growth for a few weeks, before a rise in weight is necessary. It is generally believed that with more than 15 repetitions per set, the weight will be too light to stimulate growth.

Thanks!
I'm taking a college course on copying and pasting right now. It's 4 credits and goes towards my masters degree.
This is the main sentence though and why everyone asks stupid questions here.
"Experts and professionals differ widely on the best approaches to specifically achieve muscle growth"
Is it 5x5 ...is it all diet...is it the muscle and fitness workouts..is it rippetoes... blah blah blah.

Hypertrophy is very simple really, it is nothing more than the increase of blood follow to the working muscle. When you are in the gym lifting heavy, that pump you feel, guess what? That's hypertrophy! A great workout plan is simply any plan that gets you in there lifting. But, volume is key! Make sure you are hitting enough reps in your workouts. If you are doing low reps, ensure your set count makes up for it. For instance, 5x8, or, 3x12-15.
