Glycogen Replenishment Question

I wonder which gets replenished of glycogen first..liver or muscles? Actually I've read in a fitness mag that liver stores glucose ahead of muscles and that the latter cannot store glucose until liver is full.If there is any truth to this, shouldn't a person take more than 100g of glucose/carbs after a workout to replenish both liver and muscles?

Depends.

- body weight/ lean mass?
- pre-existing state of glucogen stores?
- base diet (eg: low carb/ high carb/ low cal/ high cal)?
- fasted or non-fasted exercise?
- type / duration/ intensity of training?
- insulin sensitivity of the individual?
- other substrates taken at time of glucose?
- male or female?
- trained or untrained?

etc etc...

One word: Cortisol

It influences if liver takes priority over muscle.

Your muscles probably won't be too far depleted unless you are working out fasted. If you are following the average frequent meal plan then there will probably be overlap of the nutrients and your muscles will probably still have glycogen. It takes a lot more than a 45-60 minute workout to deplete your muscles.

This becomes much more of an issue if you're following a keto plan, where limited recompensation is more of an issue. True glycogen depletion usually takes 24-48 hrs., but is very dependant upon activity...
