Post exercises for women over 60...

Hey all! I thought this question might fit in here, since 60 is over 35

My mom had a question about what she should do. She just turned 60 last week (def doesn't look it though!) and was wondering what exercises she should be doing for her age. For general exercises and bone strength; she wants to lose some weight also.

Thanks for any/all replies!

My mom is 68 and has osteoperosis, so the doctor told her she should lift relatively light weights. I would think a full body routine 3 times a week should be great for her as long as she doesn't have any limitations. Shoulder presses, chest presses, rows, squats, deadlifts and maybe some bicep/tricep work once or twice a week should get the job done. I would also do some form of cardio 3 times a week for about 30 minutes.

One more thing...if she does have limitations, water aerobics might be a great option.

Same lifting routine as the rest of us. She can gauge her body's response as time goes on and adjust accordingly.

x2; as long as she doesn't have any medical limitations, she'll benefit like anyone else.

I'll second the suggestion of a 3-day-a-week, full-body routine. She will definitely need to train with someone who is experienced, to get her started correctly. Very light weight, to start out, and just a set or two of several exercises.

Best of luck to your mom; this post made my day!

If she has not been active for a while there is a high likelyhood there will be some limits on her range of motion, this might prevent her from being able to execute some exercises properly. Over time this will correct itself but it is easy to become discouraged.

Here is a good book for someone looking for general fitness especially after a long (lifelong?) layoff:
