Oily Mouth when dieting?
Does anyone else have this problem, or know what it is...
By about the 2nd or 3rd day of my diet, I get an oily film in my mouth and all over my tongue, no discoloration or anything (no, its not fungus). No amount of brushing, flossing, or gargling gets rid of it, I have had it the last 4 times I have started a diet (just a typical lower carb, high protein, high fiber "leaning out" diet).
I have had my bloods done, all healthy levels.
It obviously nothing major, but I would like to know what it is.
thanks.

What foods are you eating that you normally don't eat? And are you getting enough good fats in your diet?

nothing i don't normally eat, I just cut out refined carbs and bad fats. I have about 1.5 avocado a week, 6 fish oil caps a day, fish every second day, so Im pretty sure im getting enough good fats.
I think im just a weirdo! ha ha

I'd guess you're overdoing the fish oil. Take a break from it but still eat fish. After a few days I bet it clears up.
Low carb diets call for higher fats. I don't think you're getting enough. Do you know your cals and macros? At a minimum, on any diet, you need 40g a day. More to make up for low carb.

idk for sure but it might be saliva? it might be flem? i always have flem mostly in the back of my thoat, and saliva in my mouth. i dont kno what a fish oil cap is, but it sounds basically like plain fish oil. you only need 1 table spoon of oil a day, maybe you have to much fish oil.
Exercise both -- 4-7 sets per exercise, 0-1min break between sets, warm up before doing heavy exercises, per session last 1-2hours, next day muscle pain is good, don?t do any heavy exercises for the muscle you worked the day before until that muscle pain from the day before is gone. Do light exercise (walking standing...) for 6-10 hours of the day, don?t sit or lay unless you body really needs to or if you?re eating. You can do heavy exercises 2 hours in-between meals if you want, but don?t exercise any muscle that hurt from the day before. Example= mon glute and lower body, tues cardio, wed upper body, thurs cardio, fri core, sat cardio, sun cardio. Make sure you exercise every muscle. Stretching for 15min after warm-up, before working out and 15mins after.
W. weights or gym --10-15 reps, per exercise, start with a lower weight be able to build the pounds 2-20 pounds per set, be able to get at least 10 reps in the last set.
W. out weights or limited weights -- As many reps possible,
Diet 6 meals a day, 2-3 hours apart, varieties of at least 3 serv fruits, 3 serv veggies, 3 serv grains, 2 serv dairy, 2 serv meat, a serv is the size of your palm, Multi-vitamin, each meal last about 15min-1 hour. Additional supps. Or vitamins are good, but not necessary. One table spoon of oil. Drink 1 cup of water every half an hour.

Also, make sure you are drinking enough water. Your saliva gets thicker when you are dehydrated and can become sticky or oil-like.

Just wondering..why do you add that last part in to ALL of your posts, even when the person didn't ask about exercise or diet? sorry...just found it interesting

That's pretty interesting. It's definitely not fungus (there'd be no question abt that) and not oil. My guess is that it's a combination of dead epithelial cells from the surfaces of your cheeks and tongue, and dead bacteria.
As for the rationale, your mouth, even at its cleanest and healthiest is full of bacteria and just like farther down in the digestive tract, there exists a fluctuating balance between the good and bad bacteria, which keep each other in check and keep us healthy in various ways. My best guess is that when you've low-carb-dieted, you altered the bacterial flora in your mouth either by dropping your blood sugar levels, or by abruptly eliminating your oral bacteria's exposure to sugars, or both. These bacteria all reside on the surfaces of your mouth and between teeth, and below the gumline. A rapid change in the oral bacteria flora produces a layer of newly-dead bacteria; this layer is interfering with the normal sloughing-off of dead cells that continually occurs on the soft tissues of your mouth just like on your skin. The fact that it's on both your tongue and cheeks - not one or the other - also suggests that it's bacterial, having ruled out a fungus or virus.
So I would try hydrogen peroxide rinses, brushing with xylitol, rinsing with a xylitol solution or even trying an oral probiotic rinse if none of these help.

Thanks very much!
