I'm sure that most of the experienced lifters on these forums who are dedicated and absolutely know the majority of what they are doing, could easily be a trainer.

I second that.
I hate how so many women think they are going to bulk up if they lift more than a few kilos - friends have asked me in the past how to lose body fat, and when I tell them they need to do a combination of cardio AND resistance training, they look at me as if I'm fricking stupid...
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only girl my age who takes the gym seriously and actually wants to gain some muscle - geez, is there anything wrong with that??

I would have said....."Do you usually give out ****ty advice for free? Cause I'm not paying you."
Then again, I'm kind of a bitch when people interrupt me, ESPECIALLY doing legs.

I know I don't want to get bulky, but I dont see anything wrong with other women wanting to bulk up. I dont think it looks bad at all on women.
I hate when people are like "you're a woman, you shouldnt have muscle or you shouldnt bulk".
Do what you desire with YOUR body. That's the whole point. It's YOUR body to make the choices about. It doesnt matter what anyone else thinks because they arent you. If they can not deal with it, then tell them the dont have to be around you.
Good luck with the bulking up hon
And on another note. Women dont really have a lot of testosterone to bulk up. Some may, but Im pretty sure that's on a rare occasion. Mostly we tone but I have seen some natural women bulk up without the roids. One girl actually goes to my gym and she is VERY impressive

Atleast she came up to you and gave you her opinion, even if it was not what you wanted. But I think that when someone is doing something wrong in the gym a trainer should go up to them and inform them. That is just my thought, but I can totally see where you are coming from

lol im a guy and had a trainer tell me i should never lift more then 135 on any lift
i was like yea ok and now your gonna tell me that if i stick my thumb in my ass and spin around three times in the prescribed direction ill gain mass in my penis too?
needless to say i still lift heavy and push hard and grunt and groan and whine when i have disgusting muscle sorness because i have been lifting so heavy
but then again im one of maybe 6 people out of 500-600 people that use my gym daily that work legs so i guess those trainers are pretty clueless
and a women on a leg press with 2 5lb weights on it i mean common please

no toneing is good for after bulking since you are basically toneing while your cutting
toning = working the fat out of a muscle
but other then that outlook on toning yes GURLZ with muscle are so much better looking then cardio bunnys with pancake asses
squats and deadlift ass cheeks FTMFW

Its more the way the word is used in the fitness industry that is frustrating - that women dont want to put on muscle, they want to 'tone' - well hello, in order to tone you have to gain muscle, then lose bodyfat...

Toning was a word invented to further add to the ignorance that womens weight training should be different to that of mens.
The word toning should be cast to the waste paper basket of history along with the phrase "girls dont wanna lift weights or they'll get huge".

very true and disappointing that our views are not held in common stead amongst those that call themselves professionals in the field is it not?
also the fruu fruu lifts as one lady that just moved to my little burg of a town i met at the gym called them IE 5 lbs DB curls or 5 lb DB BP this is doing nothing for your client except lightening their wallet whilst stuffing yours if you are the trainer

It was my first day at that particular gym so i think she was just "checking" on me. She asked me if I was locking my knees while doing the leg press and i told her that i wasn't. I guess she felt like she had to give some type of advice lol

Bulk is relative. You can't get bulky like a MAN without steroids, but with persistence, time, patience, and an awful lot of heavy training and calories you can add some significant mass to your feminine frame--and still be feminine! Just wait until I hit a bodyweight of 135 pounds sometime in 2009, I'm gonna look awesome!!

I think that "tone" is a word used to patronize the women who are sure they are going to end up looking like Arnold with a girl's face. So they don't get scared away and run back to the cardio machine and their 2 lb dumbells.

^^^^^ Ditto
I've been teaching classes for 10+ years and train heavy and hard on my own. I'm strong for my size. I'm not huge.
I STILL get women who ask my advice and then argue with me "but weight training like that will make me huge"
Anymore my response is
"yeah
okay.
do your thing then but don't ask my why you can't get your butt any higher or tighter."

did you tell the trainer that you wanted to gain mucsle, that you wanted to be bulky? not all assume that, some assume it cuz it is what they want. i am a girl and i want to get bulky and large muscles. i dont want to be a stick, i think large muclses is more attractive.

Ever consider that people aren't necessarily paying $60/hr for "advice"? Maybe they don't want the truth. Maybe they just want to feel better about themselves and these so-called "personal trainers" are providing precisely that service.

I don't know why anyone would pay for someone who is fat or has no muscle (man OR woman) to be their personal trainer. Isn't that an indication that they don't really know what they are doing?
|
We must go to the same gym! I had an old-school trainer at another gym who wondered out loud how the other trainers got jobs.

lol all people have different goals. the thing with balleys trainers is that they think all women want to look like a fitness model. When some want to look like a tack runner.
