Ill give you an insight to the IB.
It is a very strict, very rigorous course with not much fluff, you also have to work and and present research at a much higher level. ESPECIALLY the Internal Assesments.
You do 7 subjects, 50 hours of community service, 50 of recorded sport, and 50 of recorded creativity, wich have to be documented and signed by a supervisor, a 1600 word philosophy essay and a 4000 word thesis.
Each subject has a major IA, or individual research project.
Even though what you are saying is true, when it gets down to it, all you need is something with alot of raw data, and alot of things to debate and argue about. He can factor so many things in with this type of maths IA, it will be similar to what I do.

the null hypothesis doesnt have to be correct...thats the whole point of the research!! to prove or disprove something, and back it up with factual data...
