Combines/Tryouts
I'll start this off with a talk about pro combines-primarily for arena ball. I did do the NFL combine years ago, but I've done more for the Arena teams. Some things to consider (my impressions, may not be 100% true):
1) Most "tryouts" for arena league teams are actually meant primarily for fundraising, hence to fee charged to participate.
2) There, you had better make one hell of an impression if you want to get a call back.
3) The easiest way to get recruited is to be conspicuous. Once you start playing pro at any level, you're on a list. Since making a lower level arena team, the calls started coming in and word spreads fast if you're good enough to stand out. I didn't make my first arena team by trying out, I played in an exhibition game against an arena team with my minor league outdoor team. After stomping a mudhole in the opposing arena team-they came calling quick.
4) If you don't have a D1 pedigree, its gonna be hard. I've been beating the ass of some D1 guys in various leagues for years, but they get the immediate benefit of the doubt for playing D1. But its not impossible. Just harder.
5) Playing pro at any level is just straight fun. There is an extra electricity in the air. Definitely a good time. The lower level leagues (AF2, CIFL, UIFL) don't pay much, anywhere from $100 to $500 a game with occasional bonuses. You have to get to Arena1 or probably CFL (though I'm not sure on that one) to make a living at it.
Feel free to share any experiences you've had....
