Advice on Vegetarian Diet.
Hey guys, I'm new here and I was looking for advice on a vegetarian diet. I'm not vegetarian per se, but my parents don't really bring meat into the house often, so I wanted to know what vegetarian foods are high in protein. Some stuff I do eat is eggs, oatmeal, walnuts and almonds, lentil, kidney beans or chickpeas, and cottage cheese. Do you guys recommend any other foods that are high in protein?
P.S. - Yes, I also do add carbs and fat to my diet, I just wanted to know some other foods that are high in protein. Thank you in advance.

I'd like to know this too. (: I don't know much about nutrition but i am learning. I don't eat meat very much these days either.
Is tofu good? I have tried it a few times and it tastes okay, but is it actually healthy like I've heard?
Sweetberry - i know that peanut butter is good but it's not a food you'd want to eat alone, so my advice is useless bwahha

You asked for it :P
Well, peanut butter is good on bananas! It's also pretty good on celery and on apples.
--
Other high-protein veggie foods:
* Do you eat dairy other than cottage cheese? If so, then there's all kinds of cheeses! Brie, cheddar, havarti...
* Tofu is an *excellent* source of protein, as are...
* Soy milk and...
* Edamame (green soy beans) - people LOVE these!
* Dried soy beans
* Beans (pinto, black, red, adzuki...)
* Peas
* Cashews, brazil nuts, pecans...
* Lentils
* Peanut butter, almond butter...
* Meat substitutes designed for vegetarians, but don't expect them to taste just like hamburger
And tasty foods to make out of them:
* Dahl
* I personally like tofu best in miso soup, or stir-fried with vegetables and some kind of sauce. However, there are LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of recipes!
* Minestrone soup
* Vegetarian chili
* Burritos made with any kind of beans, often black or pinto.
* Or you could add refried beans to nachos
* Hummus
* All kinds of bean soups for the crockpot, microwave, or stovetop
Of course, all kinds of fish are also good! Tuna steaks, halibut, trout, marlin, mahi-mahi... crab... scallops with a little basil... I mention these because neither of you sound like strict vegetarians, and seafood is healthy. (And it tastes soooo goooood...)

Buy tinned tuna! And more, and more, and more...
Some of the things mentioned above can provide a little protein, but no where near enough. You need lean meat or fish in your diet if atall possible. Also, protein powder is super useful for getting protein in.

Are you looking to do a competition diet based on vegetarian sources?
For me, it was very difficult to get my protein #s up and keep the carb #s down. I did my 1st comp vegetarian and it was really tough to hit the macros. I am now eating fish and turkey for low carb, low fat protein sources. I will be interested in hearing if you are doing a comp diet and how it goes....
Protein Powder (approx 25g Pro per scoop) and Non Fat Greek Yogurt (approx 20g per cup). Lots of Cottage Cheese (24g per cup).

vegetarian for six years. have done two shows without any issues of getting enough protein in. seitan and analogs are good. i make my own seitan and that helps with not relying on analogs are great deal. didn't have a problem with cutting the carbs in the diet.
i don't know why there are people who believe that you must absolutely have animal flesh in your diet in order to get enough protein in the diet. we overconsume protein as it is....none one is going to be protein deficienct being a vegetarian or vegan.

Wow that really helps a lot actually, thank you so much for all your replies! In response to fitperformance2, no, I'm not doing a competition diet, it's just for myself to try to eat healthier and lose a couple of pounds. Thank you once again for your replies!

You're welcome.
It's very easy to get enough good quality protein, even as a vegan!
Get some selfmade high protein vegan snacks, like high protein cookies.
Natural organic Peanutbutter, vegan protein powder, oatmeal, almonds, little agave syrup mix, coated with thin black chocolate.
Great stuff 30-50 grams protein a bar.

Yeah I don't understand that either. It's become so standard, people don't even think about where their meat comes from.

Can anyone post a sample vegetarian diet.
I am trying to help my mother in-law and need some ideas to help her with a diet.
Does one have to have the same recommended protein for someone like her that really doesn't lift weights at the moment. She wants to start with walking and dieting.
Thanks

Quinoa! Quinoa!
6 grams protein for 1/4 cup measured dry.
Best grain ever... just remember to give it a rinse... there is a natural coating on it that needs a a washoff.
