Post Coffee & Skinny People

I am a caffeine-a-holic. I regularly drink 6-9 cups of coffee (with skim milk and equal) or diet Pepsi every single day. I would like some advice from someone who regularly drinks/drank this much coffee, and was able to maintain and or reach their fitness goals. How did coffee play a role in achieving/ slowing down your goals? I eat healthy, and I exercise regularly.

Because of much of the liquid I take in is in coffee or diet Pepsi form, I know I am not getting as much water as I should. If you are not a caffeine-a-holic, or are fat, please do not respond. I am not interested in your gibberish. I would love to hear from someone who can speak from experience. It's hard to know who to trust, when it comes to issues on caffeine & artificial sweeteners. Although my drinks, supply very few calories, I have a feeling they can have other effects that are inhibiting my weight loss goals.

Any advice?

I used to drink almost a pot of brewed coffee a day in my old job (boring office job). I drink less than that now though.

If anything caffeine would aid fat loss due to it's ability to increase metabolic rate. Although the effect is probably small. In all likelihood, it is having no effect either way.

You can count caffeinated drinks towards your daily fluid intake. The diuretic effects of caffeine is very weak and the amount of water in a coffee or pepsi more than makes up for any lost due to the caffeine. As well as that, people who are regular caffeine drinkers build a tolerance to it's effects, meaning the diuretic effect is almost non-existent.

I found that when I was drinking large amounts of coffee I was generally not as hungry as when I drink less. Perhaps the stimulant effect of so much caffeine reduces hunger? I'm not sure on the specifics, but it's certainly something I noticed.

I totally can relate to this!!! And really the only thing that keeps me sane at this time(cutting) is the high amounts of caffeine that I take in. At this point, I'm completely ammune to its affects, but it does control the hunger pangs from no carbs. I usually consume 3-4 BIG cups of coffee a day, plus some pop. This is something Ive been doing ever since last year, and it never seemed to hinder my results at all. Just make sure your getting a gallon of water a day, all that coffee can really dehydrate you!!!

I drink a lot of caffinated tea (and don't consider myself a fat ass). Here's my take:

When I exceed my normal amount of cafein in a day, I feel a lot less hungry throughout the day. If you're going for weight loss, this is not really a bad thing. When I consume my regular amount of cafein, I don't have this effect. I can only answer this empirically, not in terms of cellular metabolism. A dietician may have a better answer for you.

The metabolic boost of coffee is actually pretty low. Just make sure you are keeping the sugar and creamers to a minimum. Also, it may be best to work on cutting down your caffeine intake. You will find your tolerance increases and you will have a lot more energy without the need for massive quantities of coffee.

How much are you working out?

When I was 26, I got an URI and just thought it was a simple cold. I ended up dehydrating my body severly and got kidney stones. I was working out 1 1/2 hours sessions 4-5 x a week. 45 min lifting, the rest was cardio.

imo - Kill the cola habit. Switch to water with lemon if you need the flavor. Even better, add green tea to curb appetite. ( I use to make fun - nicely- about a co-worker drinking it. And 6 month later, here I am addicted to the stuff at 2 cups a day.)

I drink a cup of coffee a day, but mine is very weak. About half strength vs normal stuff.

Per my doctor (then) urine should be clear. Of course, my green tea habit makes that hard to tell now. lol.

Watch your water intake too. Many people forget you can drink too much too fast and make yourself sick or worse. Moderation is the key imo.

Coffee

There was a study published in the January issue of Muscle and Fitness indicating that coffee does in fact have a certain degree of water which can contribute to your body's daily requirements. I drink coffee regularly also so it is interesting to know people's thoughts.

My job is to train baristas and the company I'm with specializes in import/export of espresso and coffee based products. So generally, I'm drinking espresso all day long. I just fill up a gallon of water and drink it through the day, at the end of the day I hit about a gallon and a half of water (taking in about 90oz of water during workout). I don't see any problem with taking in caffeine as long as your drinking enough water. Don't base all of your intake from strictly diet soda and the small traces of water that's in coffee though, try to drink atleast 2 or 3 liters of pure water.

Yea, but I wouldn't base my daily water intake off of how much coffee I drink.

Well, I drink black coffee constantly so I meet that caffeine-aholic criteria and I'm sure I'm considered "fat" by some but I have lost while drinking coffee. I think it was 2004 that Dr. Perricone said/wrote that coffee can spike your insulin and lower your blood sugar just as if you had eaten sugar. This means the fat storage effect. I personally think that some coffees do this and some more than others. It doesn't mean that you can't lose weight though. Recently, people have told me that they lost weight by swapping coffee for green tea, which is what Dr. P suggested. It's interesting that coffee has caffeine, and so many fat burner supplements have caffeine, but diet plans will tell you to cut out the coffee. I still drink it and I still lose through more healthy eating overall and workouts, etc.

The thing that I would say to you is to check out the info available on the artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, etc. And diet coke has something in it that is bad for you, worse than caffeine. I've seen people create explosions with diet cokes as experiments. I do not drink diet cokes at all, and I don't drink very many cokes either; I've always been a coffee person.

google it and you will be shocked at the side effects

Addicted to caffeine, mostly via diet Coke for I kid you not, 27 years. At 3 44oz.er's a day, I was overweight, nervous, and increasingly sickly. Finally I had a very-toxic overdose ... rare, but extremely frightening mostly due to dehydration, but other symptoms mimicking a mixture of MS and Parkinson - all at age 35.

After several years of toning it down, I am now completely off anything but green tea. I will not touch the stuff; finally I do not crave it. Actually I feel ill just thinking of diet Coke.

Google Aspartame and consider side-effects you might have overlooked.

PS In the book "Skinny Bitch," the gals explain how aspartame got through the FDA. It never should have.
