Anyone taken Anatomy and Physiology?
Has anyone taken anatomy and physiology and has it helped you with body building?
My local community college is offering it as a night class and I'd be interested in taking it if it would prove useful for me. The last time I had biology was high school, so I would like to learn more about the human body.
Here's the course description:
BIO 201 HUMAN A & P I (3-2-4)
PREREQUISITE: BIO 103
Human Anatomy and Physiology I covers the structure and function of the
human body. Included is an orientation of the human body, basic principles
of chemistry, a study of cells and tissues, metabolism, joints, the
integumentary, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems, and the senses.
Dissection, histological studies, and physiology are featured in the laboratory
experience. A 120-minute laboratory is required.
Any thoughts, experiences? Would it be worth my time? Otherwise I'm looking into digital photography.

I took Anatomy for three years and it's definitely given me an advantage, imo.

i took it 3 years ago too.. a good solid basis of what our body is made up of.. lol.. i mean if you have the time, why not.
or if you are just looking to learn for fun and not wanting to spend the $500 or whatever your collage offers it for, just pick up the text and learn on your own time... although the labs were also very beneficial.. and i am not someone who would ever be motivated to read a text.. althogh these ones were filled with diagrams and pictures, so not as boring..

I haven't had an anatomy or physiology class but the kinesiology class I took last semester was VERY helpful.

A&P is a good class, you learn a lot but it's not an easy class- be prepared to spend a lot of time studying!!

I love Anat Phys. It is so much fun and you will learn so much. It is very intensive. You will be surprised at how much you learn.

Thanks for all the input. It sounds like I'd learn a lot, but I don't think I'm up for an intensive class right now. I'm a week away from finishing my MBA in Finance and I'm kinda burned out from it. So I think I'll hold off on that one. But its great to know it would be worthwhile to take if I'm up for it.

I took both (about 3 years ago). Loved the classes and it has given me a better understanding of the human body.

I took the basic form of this class, basically no lab. It was intense in terms of memorization but not hard to learn. I absolutely loved it and I ended up changing my majour from engineering to dietics because of it. However it was quite general and didn't go into very much information pertaining to weight lifting. But it gives you a base understanding so when you do read articles etc they are much easier to comprehend.

I think that pathophys was more helpfull in learning the workings of the inside of the body :-) I had an amazing instructor! People will download his lectures off I-tunes just to listen to him!

I took it. I don't think it will help with body building. There is a lot of memorization. I think it is interesting though. I knew a lot of the stuff just from watching medical shows.

I took it and I guess it COULD kind of help, but for me it was more about memorization and had a lot to deal with making a nursing diagnosis.. of course, I'm in nursing school, so that has a lot to do with it. If you do decide to take it, be prepared because it's by far the hardest I've had to take so far.

I"m a nursing student, took 1 and 2 a few years ago. Honestly, the part that bored me the most was the muscle group and the integ. system. I don't like chemical breakdown, protein inhibitors, all that stuff. I DID like looking at the different muscle cells and the striations on them and what not but... ADP and ATP and all that stuff just... no thanks.

I did some anatomy and physiology for my gym instructor qualification. Not as in depth as the course you're considering (no lab work, all book stuff) however I found it no more useful for bodybuilding as the musculature chart that came with Muscle & Fitness. It was pretty interesting but I'd rather do digital photography!

I agree 100% with triangle and M3Rachel....the main stuff you are going to learn is an overview of how your whole body works. BUT 80% of it is so boring.....I love the body and how it works....but you don't need this class for bodybuilding. I learned more about the muscle groups and what exercises to do to work said body-part from Oxygen and Muscle and Fitness magazines.
It may have to do with my instructor. The man was 54, overweight, and not 1 oz. of muscle on his body. Plus, he cut down supplements and how they didn't really help the body. He also thought Lou Ferrigno was dead until I brought in a picture of myself with him from the last Arnold Classic.
I am also a nursing student and I passed his class with good grades. You can check out bodybuilding and Antomy and Physiology books from the library. That way you are not spending a lot of money on books and for a class. If you do take it, good luck....there is a lot of memorization.
