Thank you!
Good morning, all! I've been lurking for a few weeks and after finding the over-35 group and all the great information I thought I'd say hello. I'm 53 and have been working out for quite a while (since '82) and have always been in decent shape and fairly strong. Age, injuries and life in general have slowed me down a bit. However, I'm getting remarried in April and hope to do a better job of maximizing my workouts. I use a pyramid approach, doing more reps at the lower weights. I've started to broaden the pyramid, trying to do more sets of he lighter weights so as to put less strain on my joints. I'm also trying to do a better job nutritionally-speaking.
It's been more difficult to stay motivated as I've aged, so this forum is the perfect place to get assistance and feedback. Thanks in advance for all your collective help:-)

Hello All, I am new to bodybuilding.com and have just started a program to change my body. I have worked out sporadically in my adult life (currently 53), but never done it consistently.
Up until 3 years ago I weighted in the 120's (5'5", Female), but I was flabby. Due to some stressful life situations I ballooned up to 200 pounds.
I am serious about changing my body. I started working out with a trainer 3X a week in May which lasted until August (consistently). I gained some strength which I was sorely lacking, but didn't make any progress with the weight. From August until now I have worked out sporadically. Now I am recommitting to 3X a week with my trainer and 5X a week cardio (treadmill routine with a great deal of incline and speed variation set to music).
I have also started using the bodybuilding nutrition guide found in Rivera's and Villepigue's "The Body Sculpting Bible for Women". I am sticking to a 40/40/20 (P/C/F) diet of 1500 calories for two weeks then cycled with 1200 calories for 2 weeks. So far I have 2 (!) perfect days of eating (a journey of a thousand miles, etc. etc.)!!!!
Every meal has the 40/40/20 breakdown and each meal is 300 calories. Using lean protein, complex carbs and fibrous carbs. My main complex carbs are oats and brown rice. My only dairy is low fat cottage cheese. No fruit, with the exception of banana or apple right after weight work out if I can't get to a meal right away.
I am using Cenegenics formula Vitamin Supplements, Pure Encapsulation Fish Oil caps, Pure Encapsulation CLA, Pure Encapsulation DHEA, bio-identical hormones (estradiol, testosterone I'm at the hot flash point of life!).
I'm using ProLab Lean Mass Matrix meal replacements. The packets are 390 calories per packet so I adjust the amount to fit the 300 calories.
My trainer is having me do a 3X week full body circuit training with 3 sets of 15 - 20 reps using mainly free weights and my own body weight along with machines for leg press, leg extensions and some shoulder, tricep, back work.
I am absolutely commited to working out and eating this way. I'm giving myself a month to get used to the diet and then after that I will get one cheat meal each week.
My goal date for a "new" me is July 3, 2009.
Any and all input is appreciated. I have already found an enormous amount of useful information at this site. My goal is not to be a body builder (looking good in a bathing suit would be darn nice though) but after spending three years trying everything under the sun to lose weight, I've come to the conclusion that bodybuilders are the only one's who can lose weight "on command". You guys have this down to a science!!!!
Looking forward to being a part of your great community.

Dropping by to say hello and welcome to the new members! Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you all have a great week of workouts.
As far as my diet is concerned, I did have some pie.....and some cake...and some pie. LOL! Anyway, right now I'm just trying to keep carbs low and trying to increase my protein intake. My problem has always been I'm not a big eater. I look forward to communicating with all of you at some point! There are some very knowledgeable people on here and they are more than willing to share what they know. Best wishes on achieving your fitness goals!

Marc, Glam, Sea, welcome to the boards!
I'm a newbie here as well and can say that I've found the OV35 forums an immense help! The site as a BUNCH of tools that have been very helpful, but I think this specific community has really been a big help.
Look forward to hearing from you guys and hearing your updates.

Newbie
so here goes I have started working out last november due to my MD telling me that I was overweight and as a result was having health complications. I haven't really lost a lot of weight (maybe 10 lbs or so) since starting but I am noticeably stronger and am starting to show some definition (at least I think so). I have been reading muscle & fitness magazines and have read several books on body sculpting and nutrition. I am looking to build a little more muscle mass then I currently have and then cut to about 10% body fat. Currently I weight 200lbs at 20% body fat. (I hope to have my pic I took today up soon). I weight train 5 days a week for about 1 hr. and get about 1 hr (most often less) a week in cardio (I know this is bad but I hate cardio). Most of my workout programs are from the Muscle and fitness mags so that I can stay interested (I get bored easily) and also try to keep my muscles confused. I eat about 6 times per day Mornings I eat 3 eggs, 1/2 cup oatmeal, midmorning snack non fat yogurt (plain), lunch chicken breast with a veggie, preworkout whey protein with a banana, coffee and 2-4 8oz. of water. postworkout 1 scoop of creatine and 1 scoop whey protein, chicken or fish for dinner and snack 1 cup of 1% cottage cheese with flax seed on top. I also take a multivitamin, green tea extract and flax seed in the pill form. Part of my progress has been effected by the following: portion control, not sticking to my routine, taking time off due to work or other life responsibilities, having a few beers on Sunday during football, and of course cardio. At this time I am frustrated as I feel that I should be looking different then when I started. I see others do less and have better results then I and other then a few minor setbacks in my routine I try to stick to it religiously. Any thoughts?

Toughts...
How disciplined are you with your plan? You have mentioned that you have had a hard time sticking to your plan due to outside reasons. When does your health and plan become a priority? When you are confined to a bed? When your health is actually at the point of failing? When you have diabetes?
You need to answer these questions for yourself and say to yourself that your health is a priority in your life and be disciplined and stay consistent.
From your post, I get the feeling that your biggest issue is discipline and consistency. Maybe I'm reading between the lines and maybe I am incorrect, but it seems like you need some self-discipline and stick to a diet and exercise plan.
You say you've only lost 10 lbs in a year but are feeling stronger. Abandon the scale. Forget the scale. How are you feeling? Are your clothes feeling looser? Are people commenting on how much better you look? If you truly are gaining muscle mass, muscle weighs more than fat. Keep that in mind.
Wish you the best of luck. Hang in there and stay focused.

Checking in
I just joined the forum. Great info under the search icon.
Have lifted off and on for the past 10 years, but have been out for the last 2.
I'm back at the gym and am gonna hook up with a buddy who is a personal trainer, get my BFI, a new routine and proper diet.
I'm dreading the 2 weeks of being sore as a dog but it's just gotta be.
Great site!

Hello over 35s!
I am still working toward competiting in a fitness and figure competition. I DID gymnastics through college. HOWEVER,.......apparently my body isn't as flexable as back then...lol.
I am struggling now to do what once was the simplest things back then. But i haven't given up yet. Frustrated, but haven't given up!
P.S. i have a journal in the female bodybuilding forum if you wish to follow. ("ok here we go again, alone")

Hi all
A big hello to everyone. Been lurking for a little while but thought I'd post since I think I'm going to need the encouragement.
I'm from Southern England and I turned 35 last August. I've been doing weights since my teens but from my mid twenties my diet went out of the window. It has not been terrible but I certainly dont have much definition.
I'm about 190cm tall and I currently weigh about 245 pounds. I dont know how much of that is body fat but I plan to get a measure and I'll let you know. Anyway, I'm now dieting down in the hope that there is some muscle under that fat.
pics to follow.
Bye for now..

We wearing the same shoes? MY Diet went out the window too, but I have it back under control and so will you. I highly suggest the pics to track your progress. Monthly is my plan. Two weeks to go before I take my next ones. Trust me, my before/starting pics are quite embarrassing. But I have a good training partner and lots of desire and drive. Welcome to the boards. Get active with the boards, there is unlimited knowledge here possessed by good people that can help us both to reach our goals and dreams.

Good luck Jason and welcome. 2 weeks of being sore is a small price to pay. I am just finishing my first two weeks of getting my health and fitness back and yes, it hurts so good 2 weeks into it.

I always follow this thread and just came through to say hello to the new members and best wishes on your health and fitness goals. I was warmly welcomed a bit over a month ago and have been newly inspired by my interactions here.
I was looking at people talking about diets and have been thinking about how I've gotten off track the past few days. The point is not to beat yourself up. Figure out how and why you got off track, then focus on preventing it from occurring as much as is possible. I know the past two weeks have been filled with my running errands for people and I've neglected to plan my meals. I'm working on that for this week. I usually prepare things beforehand.
Anyway, take care of yourselves and welcome. Feel free to visit my humble site and share your wisdom and insight.

Hang in there! It took me some time to get my body back to the state that I could do some of the things I could when I was younger. I also had to realize that I had to be smarter about my workouts and more patient with myself. I've noticed a gradual increase in my fitness levels. Keep at it and you one day you will realize you've surpassed your original goals. Personally, joining this site helped me become reenergized. I'm attempting some things I never would have just a few months ago (e.g. planche push-ups...progress is slow, but I can lift myself into the air now. LOL! It will take a few months).
Keep us posted on your progress. Take care!

Well first off i would like to say Hi... ive been here for about a week and have learned so much . This is the first week i havent gone out for dinner and i feal really good. My short term goals are really to start to eat healthy and no alchohol and let me tell you this it is very difficult so im using this site to keep me motivated. Good to know someone else is there too!
Ibuprofen will be my best friend for a couple of weeks, that's for sure.
Can't wait to get over the "hump". Surely am hoping my muscles remember and come on back!

I use NOx9 made by Muscletech ,if this is the one you are referring to then I use it and it does give you a boost of energy, although because it is a new supplement for me I did not follow the instructions as noted which is 3 pills before your workout I am taking just one pill and that is enough . That is based on my weight-You will have to adjust according to your weight I am 168 right now. it also produces a flushing and tingling feeeling due to the high amount of niacin So I will watch if this is your first time.
But is highly recommended .
Check out my profile and tell me what you think I am inspired by those photos and I continue to get back in decent shape using those pics as my goal
Good luck

First of all, welcome to all the new folks!!! This is a GREAT site and more importantly, this is a GREAT forum! Tons of people with great knowledge and advice.
As for Renan35's question... a "pre-workout meal" doesn't come in capsules or pills. If you are really looking for a "meal" stick with simple things that are absorbed easily. For me, a quick glass of milk with some cocoa powder seems to help me. Your results may vary.
NO is a supplement and not meant to replace a meal. Lot's of people report success with this product and I'm thinking about trying it myself, but I'm still a newbie and want to ease my body into this lifestyle.
Whatever you try, be sure to start a workout log and track your results. It will help you figure out what works for you and help others as well.
Good luck!
