Why are we socially obligated to love our brothers?
I don't understand it. Why does everybody assume you should love your family and would die for them?
I can't stand my brother in every aspect and he is nothing like me. We never got along in the past and we still don't to this day.
Why does it seem that society expects that every family member should love each other?

Its not our "society". Its basic evolutionary biology. We strive to further our genetic code at all costs. The success of our family relates to our genetic success because they too share a % of DNA with us. We are invested to our family in relation to the amount of DNA we share.

Because it is your blood. Family comes before anything... and yes, I'd lose my nuts for my brother.
Fuk you if you don't get it.

It is not based in rational judgment so there is no explanation of that kind. It is a sociological, biological etc. phenomena so most of us can't help but feel we would die for our families. Whatever most people feel turns out to be the social norms.

well I'm glad that I can ahve one person in this fukin wrold that I know wouldn't screw me over? I realize it may not be like this for every single person, but damn man, it's good to have one person that you know will always be there for you (no homo).
Why do you think when people want to show how close they are or how much they trust they go "he's like my brother, or he's my brother".
You tell your bros **** you don't even tell your parents etc.

Reps for the only post that addressed the OP. I think this explanation is the most reasonable.

No you don't have to. If I found out specific people were somehow related to me, it would not change how I feel or the harm I would like to do to them.
Your family has little to nothing to do with DNA it is who you grew up with and were raised with/by and who you developed a family bond with. With that being said, it is possible to hate someone in your family why would it not be.

doubtful, he's probably a chicano/cholo. trying to sell stolen car audio equipment on bb.com, that's classy.
i'd love to hear his brother's side of the story.

Nearly everyone would defend their family when it comes down to it, but that doesn't mean your family isn't a bunch of *******s. You're going to have close families that can't imagine not liking each other and you're going to have ******* families that don't like each other for legitimate reasons. It's pretty hard to understand the other perspective I would imagine.

I dont think socially obligated has anything to do with it, some of us love our family and some of us dont.
I would follow my brother straight to hell and back and im sure he would do the same for me

Depending on the family it seems like you would love your brother or X family member. I would say this holds true if you have a nice family but **** ups should be cast out of this. However if you have a ****ty family I would expect hatred everywhere.
I kinda find it funny. Two of my friends are brothers and are almost nothing alike. I think they share afew interests but used to hate eachother. Both of them have grown up alot one has started a family and the other is finishing college and they are pretty good friends. It shocked me at first but I think its just because all those old sitcoms where brothers and sisters hate eachother.

BackInBusiness:
You stated that your brother is nothing like you, well, you ever thought about how much you might be like your brother?? I'm not trying to fuel your fire here, just challenging you to view things from a different angle. YOU may be a lot like your brother, YOU may see in him what you dislike about yourself. Someone mentioned earlier in the thread, what about your brother's side of the story?? How does he feel about you??
Don't just stay in that "hate" zone, find out, discover why you hate him. Perhaps you'll find out you don't really hate him. Maybe it's just that you are not best buds.
Anyway, my opinion, blood is thick, and when it comes down to it, something inside you should snap, you would protect your brother at some point, and I'm willing to bet you wouldn't be the one to push him further down.
Just discover what's bugging you.
