LaxPro Down but not out
Hello everyone. Considering the amount of time my son spends on this site, I thought it fitting to make a post about him here.
On April 14th LaxPro (Greg) was crossing a fairly busy street near the college he attends. He was struck by a car doing approximately 35mph. Greg was thrown up onto the hood/windshield of the car and continued over the roof and onto the street behind the automobile.
When he was brought into the hospital he was listed as critical likely to die. and the only reason he survived was due to the competence of the nuerosurgeon who happened to be on call that night. He suffered major brain injuries to both the left and right hemisphere of his brain. He was unconscious till April 24th. From April 24th untill today he has been making serious strides in his recovery. He has regained movement on the right side of his body, and will respond to voice commands. He occasionally moves his left arm and leg but its real weak. Sunday night he was able to make facial expressions again, and is attempting to speak. He suffered a major wound on his left arm but fortunately it missed all of the nerves and did not sever the muscle. Doctors are hopefull that he will have the use of it again in the future. (Nerves can be damaged through compression which is what they are worried about)
Right now he is battling fevers that are basically out of control. It is becoming to common for him to be 99 one minute and 105 twenty minutes later. The doctors feel that these fevers are being caused by a combination of infections (they have currently identified 3 seperate infections) and neurological based. He is also still on a respirator but is breathing over it. In other words he is breathing more than the respirator is giving him so the doctors feel they should be able to wean him off of the respirator shortly.
Everyone in the ICU unit is amazed at the amount of recovery he has made, but its still hard as **** to look at my son in his present condition. He has a very long road in front of him. They are guessing anywhere from 6 months to a year in rehab.
I would like to take a moment though to thank you all for these boards. Greg started working out when he was a sophmore in High School and I watched him completly transform himself from a cool little kid with baby fat to a really cool adult with a hell of a body. It was because of this board that he read, learned, shared and learned the proper routines, and diet.
he did NOT break one bone in his body which I find truly amazing.
Please keep him in your prayers because he really does need them. If anyone needs any other information please feel free to send a PM I will check back occasionally.
Dad of Laxpro

Superb news that LaxPro survived this tragic accident and is recovering. No doubt he has many many hard months ahead of him - but we wish him our very best.
Hard to keep a good man down - wish him a hasty return to a normal life
And many thanks for letting us know what has happened to your son, must be a very difficult time for you and your family..

Hello again everyone. Who would have thought that I would come to a board like this asking advice.
As I originally posted back in April, my son was hit by a car. Its been a very very long road so far. Fortunately for my son and the family, he is doing better. He is scheduled to come home finally December 20th. Believe me we are going to have a hell of a party when he gets back home.
He has lost the use of his left arm. Somewhere around 95% of it. He has repeatedly said that when he gets home he wants to get back to the gym, but is unsure what to do.
Does anyone know of any type of routines that can build shoulders/chest using only one arm? Any links to pages would be helpful also. Im drawing a blank but I will be honest bodybuilding is definetly not my forte. Any help at all would be appreciated.
Thank you

Try the injury recovery section or exercise section. Also, doesn't he mind you using his account?

Its ok guys/girls. Nothing to be sorry for. We all felt sorry for him from April till September. From September till December we will encouraged him. December starts real life for him, and looking to give him just a little push. Hell I may join the gym with him.
Anyway still looking for anything to do for building chest/shoulders with limited mobility in his left arm.

Can Greg move his shoulder? Is he able to sustain additional weight on it? In what exactly is this 5% usability expressed - is it in the wrist/shoulder/elbow? Depending on these answers I would think more people would be able to help you.
I know one thing for sure, if Greg made it this far he's a fighter and he's gonna get back to the gym and kick some serious ass in there! I also think you should get a membership at least for the first few weeks until he gets used to the new routines and types of exercises he's gonna be doing. He will probably need a spotter at first and you will do a great job at it! Not to mention you may as well get bitten by the iron bug (or at least the 'stay-toned' bug).
Good luck to both of you! I'm sure you will fight through that just like you fought throu all the **** that hit the fan in the last months. There are many bodybuilders with ALL sorts of disabilities out there. It's not your body that limits you, it's your mind!
Take care to both and wish you all the best!

Currently the movement in his arm/hand is in the hand only. Opening and closing the fingers. He does have movement in the shoulder although it is very little. No movement at all in the bicep and wrist. Which is due to muscle tone (sic) The muscles are contracted and it takes a lot of force to relax them.
Yeah, I am going to join with him. Just to help him move around and spot him if he needs it.
