Why do you think the old stories tell of men who set out on great journeys to impress the gods? Because trying to impress people just isn't worth the time and effort.

Since spirit bumped this old journal I might as well post an update.
Last year training was rough. I strained a tendon in my right foot pretty bad in February and when I was finally getting confident on it I got a bad blood clot in my right leg that hospitalized me for a while. My right leg was swollen 8"+ bigger than it should be from toes to hip. I could not walk without pain for a few months, and I was not able to do any decent squatting until September. I started doing heavy deadlifts again in October finally after a nearly 8 month long layoff from them due to the clot and foot injury. Since then training has been great. On my last deadlift session of the year I pulled 665 and 670 to break my 660 PR twice that I set last January before the foot injury. All other lifts have now surpassed my pre-blood clot PRs. Currently weighing in at 235 @ 10-12%.

Impressive, much more than I can do. But is that really "doing it" if you are not only using lifting straps but you are starting in the upright position?
Congrats on hit 700x2 Spy. You always inspired me and DAMN you look thick these days.
I was wondering where the clicks from 'bb.com' were coming on that vid's stats, Thanks S

30k posts on bodybuilding.com apparently hasn't taught you that straps don't lift the weight for you, and neither does the floor.

I don't know who implied it "lifted it for you". But if you are going to say that it didn't give you an advantage, then there would have been no reason to do it. Did starting in the upward phase and using straps make it harder? I doubt thats why you did it that way. One of the hardest parts of deadlifting is getting the first rep up off the floor.
At the very least, you lifted 700lbs off the floor which is very impressive.

The reason I was starting from the top this week is because I have a glute/hamstring issue (severe cramping, nerve issues) that is still lingering from the blood clot I had in my right leg's femoral vein last summer that almost killed me. The injury really reveals itself in the form of heavy, sharp cramping the instant I try to contract the glute hard (ie: breaking the weight off the floor). That being said, breaking the weight off the floor isn't a problem for me, despite the injury (although it would be better, obviously, without it bothering me). Loading the weight at the top allowed my glute to take the load easier, thus avoiding the issue I have with sudden glute/hamstring contractions in my right leg. Not so much an advantage as it is working around an injury.

No prob, bruh.
Maybe I will go and buy some straps. I might be able to pull 600 this weekend.
I just want to see how many people are lifting 700 with straps for two? Especially impressive given Spy battle with this injury. I remember when you first got it, I thought you were done for. Strong will man, congrats again and get healthy.

Yeah, you're right, straps don't help you hold the weight at all, which is why in competitions you see a mix of some people using them and others not....

Thanks Pete. I pull on Wednesdays usually 5-6pm. They have never said anything to me ever.

Thanks S. If you get straps with skulls on them thats good for at least another 20lbs. I need to get a pair though, as I have never verified that.
This leg has been a real pain in the ass to rehab and recover. Once its 100%...800

There is nothing wrong with straps in training, or if you are strongman competitor. I can link you to a vids of guys pulling 600+ and tearing biceps with a mixed grip. I don't compete in PL, so why should I take that risk when I am pulling 600+ every week?
