I use to have a big problem with Drugs and Alcohol. I got in to some legal trouble because of it and now I have been clean for 1 1/2 years. I love it. I started pretty young so it was the only lifestyle I knew. After being clean I can honestly say I have never felt better. It is honestly the best lifestyle choice I have found, the gym has saved my life in a way. Now I'm addicted to something positive. I look good and feel even better. I haven't been sick in months and it is truly amazing.
I have to jump on the boat of having only a few "True Friends". The rest just destroy themselves with smoking and drinking, with no sign of letting up. I'm glad I got off that path because it most likely leads to a dark future.
This is a great thread and it's gotten me really pumped for my back workout. Kudos to all of you for speaking your mind and heart.

Awesome thread. It's good to know there are some other people out there that actually share my view on alcohol and drugs. I've dealt with every alcohol and drug situation out there with my family and friends and it's nothing but heartbreak when I think about it. It's hard to describe my utter hatred for these substances. Mad respect to all of you for doing what you do, keep doing it, and don't let anyone tell you it's wrong or stupid. 100% drug and alcohol free. 100% devoted to bodybuilding. 100% devoted to keeping it that way.

I've never touched a drug or a drink in my life. I guess because I've always realized that it offers no benefit to what I am doing, or to anything really for that matter. The pressure or temptation just never really existed to me.
I've played in bands ever since I was a teenager and I still perform in different cities and different locations just about every weekend. Smoking pot and drinking beer are the primary activities for 90% of the people I'm around and I've heard all the cracks a million times but I've never once even been remotely tempted into giving in. It just has no appeal to me. Now, since I've gotten into bodybuilding and living a healthy lifestyle, it just compliments that even more. I look around at all my friends of the past, who smoke weed, smoke cigarettes, drink every weekend, and focus on nothing but that. I just don't understand where they think they're really going with it.
I don't look down on anyone else for their personal choices and I hope that they grow out of it and realize their true potential, but it definitely gets hard sometimes feeling like you're so uncommon with the only common bond that all your OTHER friends have with each other. I found myself losing all my friends because we just didn't share the same interests anymore. Now I barely associate with anyone anymore, however I know that turning away from negative influences will have a huge payoff in the end. I just try to stay true to myself and be dedicated to my goals and the choices I've made.
It makes my choices feel more worthwhile though knowing that there are more people out there who've made the same choices I have! Much respect people.

Don't and won't do any drugs except maybe some cycles when i get older. I got negged for trying to keep someone on here off of drugs and telling them that I am never goign to do them and they told me stuff like yeah well you will see, you might think that way now. but they are bs because not everyone has no backbnone like them.

I always went 100% macrobiotic for the entire summer before racing season and only drank purified water and organic juices. NO DAIRY! Then when season was in full swing I ate a diet of Tuna (ahi usually) and only chicken and organic veggies, which luckily I could grow at my property to help control costs. I guarantee that regimen with a strict adherence to a sane workout regimen is the only way to fly. I never fell under a #10 rating any time in my running career.

Can't stand the drinkers
About 22 weeks ago a friend invited me to join him in a competition and I seriously had to go to crash course training as far as supplements, diet, etc... Since then, I stopped the drinking because I knew that if I kept up what I was doing, it wouldn't help my training what so ever. To be perfectly honest, my wife and I would join some friends at our local pub and a lot of those dumb a$$ drunk F*$%s always laugh at the fact that I bring 6 bottles of water from home and sit them on my table. Lately we've both felt that we've out grown the scene. We see how people just pour the booze down their throats just to get hammered and be hung over all weekend. I'm glad my training has taken me way past that. Then again I usually ended up that way on my birthdays. Sure I might have a guiness every other week or something now, but I've put my training and my friends' safety first. I'll be DD with a bladder of an infant because I drink so much water while we're out. If I'm drinking water, i'm not wanting a beer. As for pot... Too many people where I live act like it's the next biggest thing to the bible. They wake and bake, the smoke all day and waste their lives away on the crap. I know way too many people that say they love the stuff and the look on my face changes when they say it all out loud. Yeah I've been there in college... 13 years ago!!! Seriously... if people are my age and still things pot is cool... they need to grow up.
Clean eating, staying off the drinks, and having not smoked pot for 8 years... I've dedicated myself to my training and continuing my adventure into the bodybuilding competition spotlight. I'd rather get high on that than drugs.

What are your opinions on nootropics, caffeine, etc? Do you think rhodiola rosea would count as a nootropic? Personally I think I'm against them but just wanted to hear some opinions...

I am drug free have never smoked not even once nor have I ever consumed a single alcoholic drink, no drugs except if prescribed by a doctor, no supplements, either, and proud of it. Only one thing I am not serious about bodybuilding, I don't want to go on stage, but I am pretty serious about weight lifting (couldn't live without it) and live for armwrestling.

Just wanted to express my respect for Straight Edge people here. I'm friends with many edgemen, and I just wanted to say keep it up, it's a great thing. I'm not edge (I drink in moderation about 4 times a year), and while I could probably kick drinking, I find it's not detrimental to my health, and I find it untrue to dedicate yourself to something so big, if you don't know if it's something you want to do forever. That being said, my gym shirt is a Ten Yard Fight sleeveless, and my playlist is Earth Crisis and other edge bands.
Total respect for all of you!

First off... Much respect to all the straight edge people in here and for those of you recovering from an issue much respect to you as well! I have seen much of my family deal with the same issues of drug and/or alcohol abuse and it's not a fun path to travel...
Nick,
I see that you are a natural BB'er now and plan to compete soon. Will you be doing only natural shows? Being that you are straight edge does that mean you would never consider AS/AAS?

I have lived my whole life without ever doing any sort of drugs. i have NEVER had more than one SIP of alcohol (just to see how it tasted). I do smoke the occasional cigar but i do not smoke.
Everybody looks at me like i am crazy when i tell them that i have never been drunk or high in my life. most people ask if it's religious. you get used to it...and when they ask how i can do what i do like go to the bars without being drunk i just say i don't know what i am missing, it's the only way i know how to do it.

Awesome thread
Bodybuilding saved my life... Was using drugs, alcohol just last year, attempted suicide.
Psychiatrist prescribed a 30 min run everyday, I observed the gym rats. Watched Pumping Iron, idolized Arnold Schwarzenegger, and that brings us to the present. Went for skinny to... still skinny but with abit of meat now. My life goal is to get as big as Arnold.

Hey Phil,
Thanks dude. Yes, am natural and plan on competing natural in natural shows. My first comp will be towards the 4th quarter of next year and a m looking forward to it. Being that I am Straight Edge means that I refrain from all drugs..This is a lifetime commitment. When you claim Straight Edge, it means drug free for life. I will never go back on my word nor dabble with AS/AAS. Yes there is a lot of pressure in this lifestyle\industry..and if you want to do well, you need to look your best when it comes time for competing..but I have made a promise to others and myself that I will stay natural for the rest of my life..never using anything illegal or that will hurt myself\health in the long run..To me, it just isn't worth it.
Thanks again Phil, much repsect back to you bro.
Nick

This thread is great. So many natural bb'ers.
Now, if I can just get away from caffeine I'll be good.

I just wanna give props to all the people in this threard that are straight edge, trying to change their ways, or anyone just trying to live a healthy life.
I do not claim to be edge or anything, however I've never drank, or done any drugs, but only because those things never appealed to me.
I go to WVU (#1 party school), and since I avoided the party scene it and all my friends didn't, it sometimes made me question my lifestyle.
But when I see all the people in this thread making the same sacrafices, it gives me a lot of motivation and reminds me I'm not the only one.
So big up to all the people in this thread, keep doing your thing...i have respect for you all.
And Nick, good look on starting the tread, and you are a huge inspiration!

Nick, awesome work - I am drug free, and alcohol free (for almost 30 years). Not one drop. I am trying in the gym as hard as I can. That is good for me. I am in better shape now than ever, after working out really hard for the last 7-8 months. Keep up the good work !!
